I realise that her children are pretty out of control, her husband is a bit useless and she seems a little disorganised, but I love her house, and she seems to have a pretty good work/life balance. She also seems to manage to keep her weight down while drinking red wine every day and eating normal food. She also looks pretty young for her age. Aibu to want to be her??

I've often wondered (having never lived anywhere near London) how much a house like theirs would cost.

I have only seen it about twice, but remember thinking their house was a complete tip?

QuimReaper · 09/01/2017 13:15

Glad it wasn't just me who was seriously underwhelmed by the Christmas special - I didn't even crack a smile, I was cringing all the way through it, only carried on watching it because Mum was with me. The kid who played Karen seemed to have so much potential when she was little, what on earth happened?

To be honest I think it's a bit weird that they're still plugging away at it now the kids are adults.

HandsomeDevil · 09/01/2017 13:15

I'll have her house. If it's in the bit of London I think it is (reminds me a lot of Wandsworth Town/Common area) then it's got to be a couple of million quid's worth at least.

zen1 · 09/01/2017 13:19

The house used for the external shots is in Dempster Road, SW18. One sold in July on the same road for 1,320,000 www.rightmove.co.uk/house-prices/detailMatching.html?prop=55479953&sale=88032015&country=england

Floggingmolly · 09/01/2017 13:19

It's filmed in Wandsworth; those houses go for upwards of £1.5 million. They're big, though... For that size, they're reasonably priced for London

Floggingmolly · 09/01/2017 13:20

Oh, x post

PetalMettle · 09/01/2017 13:23

I seem to recall some suggestion they've had the house for donkeys years.
Agree the Xmas special was disappointing
Not just me who fancies Hugh Dennis is it?

lozzylizzy · 09/01/2017 13:23

My mum calls us the 'Outnumbered family'. The only thing that is the same is that we have two boys and a girl! We watched an old one over Christmas and we were quite insulted.

I suppose my house is messy (toys and washing) and that the kids are bonkers

Nickname1980 · 09/01/2017 13:24

Those houses are expensive now, but wouldn't have been when the first season aired. Or when the first child was born (which is presumably when they fictionally bought it). I think I remember that the pilot was filmed inside the director's house.

So I reckon the rest are filmed in a house, not a studio!

I haven't seen the Christmas special yet, but loved the programme!

zen1 · 09/01/2017 13:24

i suppose it's feasible that they bought the house before prices went through the roof and they were both working full time.

Servicesupportforall · 09/01/2017 13:26

I thought the Christmas special was very funny. Much prefer the kids older as just seemed spoilt brats as little ones but still loved it.

Think they have developed the kids characters really well but then I much prefer my kids as teens not toddlers

UnexplainedOnHerCollar · 09/01/2017 13:27

I identify with her freelancing nightmares, and the sister she has! I do think she's a bit feeble at times, however I wouldn't mind having Hugh Dennis around, love him. And the house.

SittingDrinkingTea · 09/01/2017 13:29

I'm sure they're meant to have been together since university, so they feasibly could have bought the house anything up to thirty years ago.

derxa · 09/01/2017 13:30

Love their house. She's the ultimate MNetter. Loved it when the kids were very little but Christmas episode was cringey.

Oakmaiden · 09/01/2017 13:31

I enjoyed the Christmas special. I liked the way they had developed the children - Ben had always reminded me of my son as a child, and still does as a young adult...

DontTouchTheMoustache · 09/01/2017 13:33

I thought the Christmas special was OK. I didn't enjoy the last season (when Karen had long dark hair and had just started high school) as I felt they completely ruined her character but I thought they did a good job of binging back her Karenness in the Christmas special.

Maudlinmaud · 09/01/2017 13:35

I'd rather be Claire from Modern Family, endless laughs with Phil.

HardofCleaning · 09/01/2017 13:41

But they must be in a mountain of debt though. How can they afford that house, in London on their wages. haha yes on one teachers salary? Unless they inherited it years ago they'd be in ridiculous debt.

diddl · 09/01/2017 13:46

" I know it's popular but I find it the least funny programme in the whole world."

I don't find it funnt either.

But for least funny I offer-Parks & Recreation.

JennyOnAPlate · 09/01/2017 13:52

I always comment on the house and how they could never afford it Grin

Saying that though I know more than one family who live in houses they were only able to buy because of financial help from parents.

NapQueen · 09/01/2017 13:53

She works though doesn't she? Isn't she a PA?

Yy to being Claire Dunphy. Love that show and their house and their life in general tbh.

Maudlinmaud · 09/01/2017 13:57

Nap you would never be bored. Ever.

SirChenjin · 09/01/2017 14:19

You'd certainly have to have a sense of humour if you were married to Phil Shock Grin. Just getting into Modern Family - v v funny

LuciaInFurs · 09/01/2017 14:51

I think I remember in one episode they talked about trying to pay off a second mortgage or taking one out (correct me if I'm wrong). I think it was round the time that they were considering putting Granddad into a home.
