"I've name changed for this"

I just don't get it.

Why not just name change and say nothing.

Interesting first post OP Grin

FlouncingInAWinterWonderland · 07/01/2017 23:39

As someone without a trolldar, i appreciate the welcome to mumsnet comments. I don't assume that being a newbie makes someone a troll but I stand back a little if it starts to heat up.

WorraLiberty · 07/01/2017 23:40

How is it hidden, OP?

Can you not see the 'Advanced Search' button at the top of your screen?

Granted, I don't use the mobile app so perhaps it's different if you do?

DesolateWaist · 07/01/2017 23:43

Advanced searching is useful is someone is tying themselves up in knots. It's also useful to remember though that many people bend the truth to make themselves less identifiable.

Cherrysoup · 07/01/2017 23:45

Blimey, I don't have time to search back through someone's posting history to see if they're new/maybe a troll. Who cares? This is a very time waster entertaining forum, lively, full of people who can help with various issues. I couldn't care less if someone is a troll/new.

Another one that makes me a tiny bit puzzled: say a poster is clearly enthused by the topic and posts persuasive or repeated arguments to back up the OP. Someone almost invariably then says something about them being 'overinvested' in the thread. This always comes across as a bit troll hunter is the 'overinvested' poster must surely be the OP posting under a different name just to get the point across. To me, it's just someone passionate about the issue. Strikes me as incredibly patronising.

LouisevilleLlama · 07/01/2017 23:45

It's advanced stalking Worra Shock although I imagine loads do haha

Hi and thanks for that. NO I had no idea that was there. It still requires a lot of input though where other fora I'm on gives instant access to a poster's history.

No quotes allowed here, no thanks, no nothing either.

I find it a bit odd. But just me obv. no worries.

You use the search button. Helpful for lots of things and also lets you find all posts by a particular poster (under a specific name).

For example during an MRA attack one particular poster was saying lots of things like how as a lady she felt really flattered when men whistled at her on the street and in fact she'd met her current OH when he said "allo darling nice tits" from some scaffolding. My razor-sharp senses were alerted that this might not be entirely on the level, and indeed when I checked, previous posts by that poster started "speaking as a man" and "I find the M&S gents suiting very comfortable and reasonably priced".

Similarly on Relationships, you see a lot of the regulars saying "I know you only asked whether it was financially wise for you to have another baby with your darling OH, but I can't help noticing that you posted last month asking for advice on makeup to cover the black eye he'd given you when you looked at him funny. I think there are wider issues here."

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 07/01/2017 23:48

No one mentions Pom Bears or bats anymore though.

Why is that?

extrabiotin · 07/01/2017 23:50

Thanks all.

I genuinely didn't see the search button.

This site is not the same as others I use. Mea Culpa!

Anyway, goodnight all and sleep tight. Still can't figure out the name changing thing. But however!

Pom bears is if say one of about 3 threads that made me actually laugh on MN and the only one I remember the topic of.?i always Hmm when I see howling, chuckling actual LOL perhaps I'm just moody

DesolateWaist · 07/01/2017 23:52

and quite often a newbie rocks up and tells us all the ways the site is doing it wrong and why can't it be more like facebook.

And don't we all love it when people turn up and tell us we are doing it wrong.

WorraLiberty · 07/01/2017 23:52

It requires hardly any input at all Confused

In the time it takes you to type a reply on a thread, you could easily copy and paste someone's name into the AS.

For example, someone was outed about an hour or so ago because they'd forgotten they'd posted exactly the same thing last night, in a different name.

Except it turned out that under that name they'd also posted other things that just didn't add up. So HQ suspended that poster while they take a look at the thread Wink

Doughnutsmademefat · 07/01/2017 23:53

I will search old posts if I think someone is telling some big lies, usually get the old chestnut of it not being on to 'trawl' (it's always trawl) through old posts. Yes it is you massive fibber.

cocopopsrock · 07/01/2017 23:54

I've been meaning to ask for ages.. 'cancel the cheque' is that mn speak for something, or does it actually mean cancel the cheque?? Confused lol

LouisevilleLlama · 07/01/2017 23:55

Cancel the cheque I believe was a wedding present or something and the OP got an email basically saying they hadn't given enough, people kept telling OP to cancel the cheque

extrabiotin · 07/01/2017 23:58

Thanks for all your pointers folks.

Much appreciated. Still have some learning to do though!

WorraLiberty · 08/01/2017 00:00

How long have you been a member of MN, OP?

You'll pick it up.

YesThisIsMe · 08/01/2017 00:00

The OP said in her second post that the cheque had already been cashed but several hundred posts later people were still coming in to say "I think you should cancel the cheque". It was the huge numbers of people who hadn't read the thread repeating advice that a) had been given a hundred times already and b) was completely impossible, which made it go beyond irritating and out into funny.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/01/2017 00:00

Of course you can quote - you just put * each side of it.

Yy to the newbies:

  1. Telling us where we are going wrong
  1. Asking why there are non parents on the site
  1. Expressing horror that there are men on the site
  1. Telling HQ that we need a like button because other fora have them
LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/01/2017 00:01

Oh and either 'lol' or 'xx' at the end of their posts Grin

JustHereForThePooStories · 08/01/2017 00:01

Interesting first post, OP
Etc. etc.

cocopopsrock · 08/01/2017 00:02

Thanks Louise and yes... I gathered it was along those lines, just wasn't sure!!!

DesolateWaist · 08/01/2017 00:03

Yes 'cancel the cheque' comes from a long thread about 6 months ago. The op had given a cheque as a wedding present and the couple had emailed to say that it wasn't enough.
The op explained on the second page or so that the cheque had been cashed already but it people kept posting suggesting the op cancel the cheque.
Since then it has become MN slang for people posting and making a suggestion that has already been suggested multiple times.

As a side note the thread made all the news, including in Australia!
