AIBU to think this is a weird New Year message

In reply to my [stunningly original ] text " Happy New Year! " I received this from my niece

" 2016 has been my best year ever and I'm hoping to be even more successful in 2017" .

AIBU to think this is odd? Most people just replied with a similar greeting or " hope you and the family are well" . Some sent a snippet of news

" busy year for us as Mary starts her new job in February /we are moving house in the summer / we have a new puppy " .

Is this because I don't understand Young People Today ?

Oh she's going to look back and cringe so much one day..Grin

Kr1stina · 06/01/2017 11:45

But who'd be senior enough to interview her for this? The queen, perhaps

Probably Managing Director of Sales in the Galaxy, but she's on maternity leave right now Grin

It's a shame because she's really not a bad person. I'd imagine she goes down better in London.

tut tut, she will learn. sit back with the popcorn.

insertwittynickname · 06/01/2017 11:55

Well I'm 29 and wouldn't message someone something like that and neither would any of my friends / husband.
Do you think it might be that she's just full of herself and nothing to do with her age.
Sick to death of people thinking it's ok to imply all people under 30/35 or whatever the acceptable age cut off is are egocentric, spoiled, take selfies etc.

Kr1stina · 06/01/2017 11:57

It's a light hearted thread insertwittynickname

I'll start a lighthearted thread about how much of an old bat my aunt is (which she is btw complete cow) but then I'd get told that ageism isn't acceptable wouldn't I.

TheAntiBoop · 06/01/2017 12:00

I have a friend who is 40 and is like this. Her own career, her kids, her husband - even her dog - are given the full treatment

So agree it's not an age thing. It is hilarious though!!

downwardfacingdog · 06/01/2017 12:06

Don't worry insert you'll be 30 soon and no one will count you as being young anymore and anyone in their late teens or early twenties thinks you're ancient. I assumed the OPs niece was about 20 until she updated. Grin

paxillin · 06/01/2017 12:08

Do you have to derail such a fun thread, insertwittynickname?

Nobody said "all young people". OP said Is this because I don't understand Young People Today, which is something many of us said in middle age, invariably tongue in cheek. Your fight to make this about you and your age looks almost as "promote MEEE" as the OP's niece. Start that thread about your old bat aunt and see what happens. Ageism doesn't hit the late 20s nearly as often as you appear to imagine. You are currently in the most privileged age group you'll ever be in.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 06/01/2017 12:25

Yes not all youngsters are selfie taking ego maniacs but I did take it as lighthearted. My dm is partial to sweeping 'nobody is as competent as moi" statements and she's in her late 60's. Grin

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 06/01/2017 12:26

She would never send a text like that though.

ofhorse · 06/01/2017 13:46

It reminds me of "Pretentious?? Moi??" Said in a very loud pretentious voice. Grin

ChasedByBees · 06/01/2017 14:03

That's so funny!

BIgBagofJelly · 06/01/2017 14:38

lol does sound like the one woman I know that started "Forever living" or whatever it's called.

BIgBagofJelly · 06/01/2017 14:40

Seems like we can never have a thread about any individual without someone accusing it of being a something bashing thread. MiL's, old, young, etc etc.

nauticant · 06/01/2017 14:47

BIgBagofJelly: I object to you bashing posters who object to bashing.

Kr1stina · 06/01/2017 15:55

Why did no one object to my saying that I'm an old fogey ?

Sounds just like DH niece who is now making 16,000 a year and driving a convertible peugeot thinks she is something special.

Kr1stina · 06/01/2017 16:16

I'd love to drive a convertible Peugeot with no children in it

AntiBoop -funny you should mention Donald. Her BF ( who is not called Donald ) is a very right wing Tory and last Christmas we had to endure him raving on about Trump and how " all of us here at Morgan Stanley think he's going to win " .

While we all thought what a fool this young man was because obviously that could never happen......
