To have been shamed at the gym

I am a plus size lady who has made it her New Years resolution to lose weight. I joined a gym in December and mainly use the pool. I suffer from knee pain so I have to use the pool for my exercise I can't do running or bike.

So I do little bit of swim-hops/walking which helps my knee and also helps me lose weight. When I arrived I went into the fast lane as it was completely empty and was the smallest lane. It suddenly got really busy and that made other lanes quite busy.

Then two men moved into my lane. They started a fast swim. I asked them could they wait another 15 mins for me to finish and that I have a knee problem so this is helps me.

They replied that "that's not our problem and that the pool was for those who do real exercise". I replied it is real exercise and then I heard one of the men mutter "it's not the lard lane" and I left straight away.

Aibu to think that these men are complete cunts.

But you knew that you were in the "fast lane" & that they wanted to do a fast swim?

Those men behaved terribly, very rude indeed, but you simply cannot expect private use of the fast lane and expect people to wait fifteen mins for you.

You should have moved over and I'm genuinely stunned you didn't know that and would ask them to sit and wait whilst you used that lane for your personal and private use.have you never been in a swimming pool before? 🙄

Swimmers are quite fussy about the fast lane in my experience. Swimming is also a total yawnfest in my experience! Let them get on with it. I suspect they went OTT and added in the rude comment because they are cunts. Which makes them not worth your time. As an eternally thin person, I could easily be awful to bigger people at whatever class I'm takin this year but I applaud them. Exercise is hard. You have to motivate yourself to be bothered, let alone have to do that AND worry about whether someone will be a cunt because you're working hard. Fuck 'em.

Where I go swimming, there is a guy who is always in the middle lane doing length after length after length - while his prosthetic leg waits for him on the side of the pool!

He gets in the most suitable lane for his speed of swimming despite having a 'leg problem'. He doesn't expect his own lane!

Yes the men were rude but you were being unreasonable and very entitled to expect the rest of the gym to work around your wish to swim-hop!

Really sorry that this happened OP and I hope you won't let it put you off.

But in the kindest way possible, your behaviour was entitled. They were horribly rude and crass but your request was way too much.

They were totally out of order to talk to you like that, however you shouldn't have been in the fast lane. Not that it gives them the right to talk to you like that, I hope it doesn't stop you from going.

As the OP said it was all lanes, presumably swim hop is slower than even slow lane swimmers. Should she not go at all?

Just because you have a medical condition you don't get to monopolise the facilities. You have no idea what conditions everyone else there has. You were being unreasonable.

She should go in the slowest slow lane. We regularly have wankers/swim hoppers in the slow lane.

Why don't you see if the gym offer aquaerobic classes and do those, instead of swim-hopping all by yourself? They are mostly aimed at those with joint issues and it's damn good fun, and a great way to make friends. You can always opt out of the exercises that are too vigorous.

The lard comment was rude, but so were you, even though it wasn't intentional. Good luck with the weight-loss regime!

Also in the slow lane you can sedately swim past as it is usually head out of the pool breastroke, whereas the fast lane is head in the water and tumble turns. No wanking in any lanes however.

There are plenty of things that annoy me at the pool but thankfully I've just seen walkers, not wankers.

However fast lane,as name suggest is fast swimmers.youre not fast,and you were blocking the lane

I don't understand how you can hop a length of a pool anyway, don't you start to drown about half way?

There was a fucking FLASHER too at my pool yesterday... this was after the flaming walker incident...
