surely noone can defend that?

It's three and a half months till easter. What possible reason could there be for the supermarkets to have hot cross buns and easter eggs already?

I am eating mini eggs now.

It's people like me who are encouraging the shops to put the Easter stuff out now Xmas Grin

1 egg
150 ml warm water
1/2 tsp salt
35 g soft butter (or sunflower oil)
280 g strong flour
2 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 tsp mixed spice
a cup of dried fruit
2 tsp fast acting yeast

Dough cycle (52 minute rise).

Knead lightly on a floured surface, then divide into twelve pieces and shape into buns. Place close together on a lightly greased tray. Cover with a cloth and sit in a warm place for half an hour to rise.

Combine 40 g plain flour with 40 ml water and 1 tsp sugar to form a smooth paste. Pipe crosses on top of each bun.

Bake at 200 for 25 minutes.

Warm some golden syrup. Brush over buns whilst still hot. Leave to cool.

I did see the beginnings of Easter chocolates in M&S food yesterday. The chocolate bunny lollipops

Jellybean83 · 04/01/2017 10:42

I love hot cross buns, I buy them all year round, and if you're very luck you can sometimes find the chocolate and toffee ones in M&S. I feel like I've hit the jackpot when I find those, I usually have to stockpile and freeze them as they are so hard to get past Easter.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/01/2017 11:09

I'm looking forward to the Asda toffee and white choc chip ones (only there at Easter). I get your point though, but the same could be said for mince pies in September.

statetrooperstacey · 04/01/2017 12:37

Hot cross buns in the shops all year round here, also Maltese bunnies and chocolate mini eggs and cadburys cream eggs, All of these things were on sale before Xmas also so don't think the egg displays are for Easter, they are just all eggs together!

Geobaby · 04/01/2017 19:05

I work in sainsburys and we had creme eggs and chocolate bunnies on the shelves on xmas eve. And people were buying them Hmm

bangalanguk · 04/01/2017 19:20

I heard an assistant in M&S say that they start selling them on Boxing Day.

Jellybean83 · 04/01/2017 19:22

M&S sell them all year round.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 04/01/2017 19:45

but the same could be said for mince pies in September.

I used to work for morrisons and was in charge of bread and cakes stock. We sold own brand mince pies year round. At Christmas the range was widened to include Mr Kipling and the fancier ones and the boxes were more festive.

theonlygeorgie · 04/01/2017 20:01

I saw mini eggs provocatively displayed today... I thought they were only around at Easter?

Funnyfarmer · 04/01/2017 21:20

I got about 5 packs from the whoops section in asda yesterday for 3p each and I love them so can't complain. But for some reason I wouldn't buy ( normally for full price) them until easter time even though I really like them. I really like chocolate eggs too but just wouldn't buy and eat them until easter. Just feels wrong

MrsRJCxx · 04/01/2017 23:58

When doing our payday shop at the end of December, they had the 'seasonal' aisle half xmas sales and half Easter eggs. My husband stood there and literally shouted 'what the F**K are Easter Eggs doing out already'
An elderly lady behind him sniggered at his outburst and agreed with him.
I, on the other hand, eyed up the creme eggs and sneaked one into the trolley when he wasnt looking. Its my favourite time of the year Grin

Grindelwaldswand · 05/01/2017 00:00

My local co-op has the Easter eggs and Easter crafts out already next to some reduced Christmas cards and Christmas gifts Grin

JoeyJoeJoeJuniorShabadu · 05/01/2017 01:26

There was easter eggs in my local supermarket on 27 december.

viques · 05/01/2017 01:41

I don't mind spiced currant buns with a dough topping being available all year round, but I wish they could be relabelled as something else until lent .
HCBs are special and should be cared for like a rare endangered species which appears for a few weeks then creeps off to hibernate leaving us with a similar but different version. A bit like Christmas cakes, you can buy iced fruit cakes all year round, but they are only Christmas cakes when it is Christmas.

scaryclown · 05/01/2017 02:22

I hate that hot cross buns are even x-type crosses rather than crucifix ones..

So O think either appropriately close to easter, and crux shaped cross with amything before or after being spiced buns without the cross.

Also make them p r operly supermarkets .should be big, more fruity, and designed to taste good with butter...not a squash-dough pseudo snowball affair..

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 05/01/2017 10:58

They're just spicy buns.

Easter eggs on the other hand can fuck off.

MrsHathaway · 05/01/2017 11:14

yy scary - often the shop ones are barely baked through.

DIY then you can have exactly the crosses you want!

somewheresomehow · 05/01/2017 11:32

Easter eggs in m&s yesterday fucking ridiculous,
although I do like hot cross buns at any time surely they are just a stickier version of a tea cake

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 05/01/2017 11:43

I love HCBs fresh from bakeries, but in recent years the ones from the supermarkets have become very, very doughy and much too squidgy! What has happened to them?

Petronius16 · 05/01/2017 18:26

HCBs? Food of the gods. Make my own but don't waste time or ingredients putting on crosses. As Sukey posted, just spicy buns.

AmberStClare · 05/01/2017 18:31

M&S hot cross buns, bliss. In fact I want one right now so OP it is your fault I will have to go out in the cold. And get dressed from my PJs so I look proper too.
