Left son and dog Outside tesco 10 minutes

This is the first time and it was 2.30pm.

Last day off school ds 9 wanted to walk the pug to tesco with us, it is our closest shop, he waited outside with the dog, whilst I went and got bread and milk, back within 5/10 minutes.

An old neighbour, who had had her children removed off ss commented I was mad leaving him outside, I said he's 9 and wanted to wait, it's daylight. But it did get me thinking wibu letting ds stay outside.

No, I don't think so.

The old woman had her children removed off her by SS ? Why is that relevant ?

He's 9, of course he can stand outside s shop that you're in for 10 minutes!

Maybe in her mind her kids were removed for a trivial reason and she was genuinely worried for your ds.

I remember being a similar age to your son and doing exactly that. I loved it as the dog often got fussed over so I don't see the problem.

If she has had children removed from her by ss, I suppose it is in her own interest to believe that it could happen to anyone for the most trivial reasons. But what you did was perfectly reasonable, don't let it bother you.

Wow, it happens all the time in my town with children of similar age and dogs, so all the parents in my town need their children removing according to your neighbour. Your ds is 9 he can wait outside with the dog if he is sensible. Your child so you know what he is like. Ignore your neighbour.

Grind - The ss comment was maybe my kitty claws coming out, i thought it relevant, as why would I let someone's comment, who obviously failed as a parent, bother me.

Far more of a risk to leave your pedigree dog outside alone than with a nine year old.

I'm the most over protective parent going (long story) and I would have.

Blimey, when I was 9 I used to go on my own to the local shops and buy my Dads fags for him!! It's a wonder any kids survived the 1970's! No YANBU.

Tbh the pug was more likely to be taken than your son anyway. Loads of dogs being stolen at the moment near me.

You don't know her story.

Fine to leave him outside the shop but I would wind your neck in regarding neighbour having 'failed as a parent' you don't know everyone's story.

At that age, both my dcs were spending much more time outside in the street playing on their own.

Another one whose mum would simply have sent them to Tesco at 9! (often used to do the 10 minute walk or cycle to our local Co-op to stock up on things like teabags and bread and pop into the nearby library)
Even by current standards, many 9 year olds are mature enough to stand outside a shop for a few minutes.

Ok genuine question.
What could have the neighbourg done that would have seen her dcs taken away but had nothing to do with her parenting? What sort of circumstances would lead to that? MH issues? Health issues?

I'd be far more worried about the dog than the kid.

He's 9 years old, not 2 years old, of course it's fine.

I would be prepared to bet that she didn't have her kids removed because she left them outside a shop for 10 minutes in broad daylight!
