To not wash my fruit and veg before cooking/eating?

Inspired by the bin thread. How many of you actually wash your fruit and/or veg before eating or cooking it? I never have, do people really do this?

Yabu.

I wash absolutely everything, takes seconds. If I am steaming vegetables (my usual method of cooking) I will chop the vegetables up and then use the layer of the steamer I'll be cooking them in as a colander and rinse under the tap.

I wash all salad vegetables and dry in a salad spinner (even the ready washed stuff in bags).

You can wash fruit that comes in plastic boxes, like grapes and plums etc, in the box itself. The water will drain out through the holes in the sides.

NannyR · 02/01/2017 20:44

I don't routinely wash fruit and veg. I think that unless you scrub it in hot soapy water, you are not going to be washing much off it anyway, a quick rinse under the tap is pointless.

I would wipe off any visible dirt and I rinse things like kale or spinach as they can be quite sandy and gritty, but other than that I don't really wash anything. I've never been ill as a result.

lapsedorienteerer · 02/01/2017 20:44

Never

Sparrowlegs248 · 02/01/2017 20:45

No, never wash anything unless it's actually muddy. Sometimes if I buy a bagged salad/leaves I will rinse them.

Artandco · 02/01/2017 20:45

And yes a cold rinse isn't going to wash chemicals off anyway

Fartleks · 02/01/2017 20:45

Yes particularly if not organic.

Evergreen17 · 02/01/2017 20:46

You should. I know it is a pain but we should.
"I will rinse fruit and veg that is to be eaten raw if it's imported, as it will have bacteria that we are not used to. "Hmm eh???
You dont wash veggies that you will cook it to get rid of bacteria but chemicals.
Pesticides on fruit and veg, very bad for you.
And my friend also caught a tape worm from a salad.
How? Well Hmm lets think about what kind of fertilisers we use and where do they come from...

cherryblossomcarpet · 02/01/2017 20:46

I do, because having done some work for a chemicals company I know what they spray on them. Pesticides and fungicides aren't something you really want to be eating. A colleague who worked testing new fungicides for cucumbers told me he wouldn't eat cucumber peel if you paid him. I started peeling them after that.

Ankleswingers · 02/01/2017 20:47

I wash all fruit and all veg. Thoroughly in a colander under water.

I always think of pesticides/ dirt that's been on it as well as transportation and who has been packing/ handling it.

I have also seen the way some shoppers pick it up in supermarkets and poke/ prod/sniff loose fruit/ veg and it turns my stomach.

Would never not wash it.

haveacupoftea · 02/01/2017 20:47

No. I dont think rinsing will do much other than make the chemical ridden fruit wet.

Crumbs1 · 02/01/2017 20:47

No

bibbitybobbityyhat · 02/01/2017 20:47

And like other posters, it is less to do with bugs (although I don't really fancy ingesting fertiliser) because I am not any kind of clean freak, and more to do with pesticides.

HarrietSchulenberg · 02/01/2017 20:48

Having seen people not wash their hands after leaving supermarket toilets, then go straight to the fruit and veg and poke about in the produce, I do always wash anything that's not going to be peeled and cooked.
I'm not averse to a bit of bacteria but someone else's pissy/shitty fingers on my apples is too much even for me.
And most supermarket fruit and veg is covered in pesticide residue anyway so a good rinse is definitely necessary (unless you want to develop a personal resistance to greenfly, in which case don't wash it off).

Sparklingbrook · 02/01/2017 20:49

I think it's a bit Hmm to claim you don't wash it but have never been ill as a result. There are lots of risks you take daily that only take that one time when it wasn't ok to make you realise.

Bundao · 02/01/2017 20:50

I always do if it's not being peeled.
As a farmers wife I've seen what goes on/gets into/pisses on fruit and veg, not to mention some of where it goes before it even gets to the supermarket. Where it's grown and how far it's travelled will govern how I wash it. Sometimes just a water rinse and others get a water and vinegar wash. We're in the developing world so a wider range of parasites.

DeleteOrDecay · 02/01/2017 20:50

Only if it's visibly muddy otherwise I don't bother.

I don't think a rinse in cold water would remove much in terms of chemicals anyway to be honest, but I'm no expert.

Ankleswingers · 02/01/2017 20:52

Harriet

Absolutely yes.

Ohdearducks · 02/01/2017 20:53

Oh and some farms use dried human waste to fertilise crops so even more reason to wash.

AmserGwin · 02/01/2017 20:53

Oh god I might have to start! Shock
So used to not doing it, I will probably forget until I'm halfway through eating it

PinkSwimGoggles · 02/01/2017 20:54

yabu

I hate gritty leeks.

Blossomdeary · 02/01/2017 20:54

I once used to pick strawberries during the school holidays. Some women used to bring their pre-school children and they used to let them piss on the plants rather than lose money on the piece rates by traipsing them to the edge of the field.

I leave you to guess whether I wash fruit and veg!

Figure17a · 02/01/2017 20:56

I do usually but really not sure what difference a quick rinse makes

gunnergirl · 02/01/2017 20:56

I don't all the time I'm also a firm believer ur body needs to build immunity also my family very rarely ill

AmserGwin · 02/01/2017 20:57

Thinking about people's piss on my fruit is not going to help my 'healthy eating' new year's resolution ShockGrin

OP posts:
Camomila · 02/01/2017 20:59

I usually rinse it under the cold tap and give it a rub, I don't fancy eating tiny bits of mud, especially on things I eat raw like cucumber or celery.

I do occasionally eat fruit without rinsing it because I am too lazy.
