Horrified watching my aunt prepare today's lunch...

Just checking that I'm not being super sensitive! Was at MIL's today for lunch...Aunt was in charge of potatoes which were to be boiled and covered in garlic, butter and herbs.

Lovely.

Except...not.

I had to watch her as she put the butter etc in and using a selection of utensils, repeatedly lick them after she'd stirred the potatoes...and then plunge them into the potatoes again....good stir....back into the butter dish...more licking...back into the potatoes...then back into the butter...another good lick.

Boak.

She then, coughed into the pot for good measure.

Shock

This is a bit lighthearted by the way....she's not in her dotage or anything...60 years old and perfectly together...she knew I was sititng there watching.

I had been looking forward to a nice spud! I had to refuse them and eat meat and salad!

What gets INTO some people?

I do this all the time cooking the family meal. I figure we all share the same germs anyway.

However, I don't do it when cooking for others.

Deidre21 · 03/01/2017 18:03

Are you crazy, asking if you are being unreasonable! Of course, you're not! That's disgusting! I've experienced (seeing that type of cooking) I don't ever eat at their house. It's gross! Anything, that I cook for my family (living in our house) I do hygienically and that goes the same for people who visit us, friends or family including strangers.

ManaFleet · 03/01/2017 18:04

Ridiculous. I'd much rather eat a meal that's been cooked by someone who tastes as they go than not.

Daydream007 · 03/01/2017 18:05

I used to work in a restaurant and the chefs used to often do this to check the taste. It goes on more than you think. Disgusting yes!

titzup · 03/01/2017 18:11

I lick when making family food, but not when making food for others. Would never dream of coughing into any food.

my MIL actually makes me boak with coughing and other such grotty habits. She loves baking, but you find hairs and dogs hairs kneaded into the pastry, she'll happily cough all over it right in front of you. Opens fridge, coughs into it while scanning for items....oh god, I really have to just put it out of my mind :S

SirChenjin · 03/01/2017 18:12

You know you can taste as you go and use a clean spoon, or use one spoon to decant into another bowl and another to taste if you're worried about the number of spoons?

Wookiecookies · 03/01/2017 18:21

I TASTE when I go too, but guess what? I use a fresh spoon each time! Or thoroughly wash and dry the spoon It's not exactly rocket science is it? Hmm

Ubertasha2 · 03/01/2017 18:23

Actually, I am overweight so if someone could come to my home and cook for me and lick spoons, double dip etc, for once I may be able to stick to a diet!

I also agree with a past poster that we'd be horrified to hear what goes on in restaurant kitchens.

I remember in 'Harold and Kumar get the Munchies' film, a character asked for their French toast to be improved- to be warmed up and the topping to be reduced etc, then when it was taken to the kitchen the waiter licked off all the surplus topping before warming the pieces of toast by inserting them into his moist, hairy, rancid looking bum cheeks..........yuck!!!!!

libbyb · 03/01/2017 18:23

It took Ben & Holly to alert me to the fact that the child (often your own) blowing out the candles would be spraying the whole Birthday cake!!! I was very un-party after realising this and watching some quite 'poorly' kids soldier on through their Birthday celebrations! Ill or not the cake was usually carefully slid into the bin ;-)

nursy1 · 03/01/2017 18:23

Oh for goodness sake! This is normal family germ sharing. This is why all our kids have asthma and coeliac you fussy lot.

mummylove2monsters · 03/01/2017 18:23

This makes me feel sick as does - people who double dip a chip or snack into a dip / bite /dip - yuk
And shop assistants who lick their finger to grab you a bag and proceed to put your food over the scanner into bag 😳

Wookiecookies · 03/01/2017 18:33

Coeliacs? Really nursy? An autoimmune condition! So, MS, Lupus, becets, Cystic fibrosis etc... Are these caused by fussy hygeine standards too? Ffs. Hmm

Wookiecookies · 03/01/2017 18:34

My mistake.. not CF, but the others are autoimmune conditions.

nursy1 · 03/01/2017 18:43

Well yes Wookie. Some research links that. Immune system wrongly recognising " normal" substances as a threat.
That's not the point though is it. Tasting your families food with the same utensil you might serve with is fine in my eyes. Do we all nip in the bathroom every time somebody uses it and bleach all the taps, door handles and surfaces?

Ceaser1981 · 03/01/2017 18:43

This would put me off eating it too. I dont think people realise sometimes, i work in a large office, about 150 people in the immediate area and one of the ladies used to lid lick. Im all for lid licking but i dont think id get my tongue out and go to town on a yogurt lid in the office for all to see.

Another lady once sat eating a creamed rice next to me and added something that made it a funny colour so i asked her what it was. She told me then licked the back of the spoon and offered the spoon to me to try it, i must of looked a bit horrified and tried to politely decline. Haha i suppose it just doesnt bother some people but to me sharing cutlery, double dipping is a no no.

nursy1 · 03/01/2017 18:51

Wookie
Hygiene Hypothesis. Just look it up

Wookiecookies · 03/01/2017 18:53

My DF has becets. I dont need to.

Wookiecookies · 03/01/2017 18:54

It is nothing to do with fucking fussy hygeine. It is a genetic autoimmune disorder, as is coeliacs.

Wookiecookies · 03/01/2017 18:56

We are talkimg about OPs MILs aunt. It is not the same as sharing the spoon with immediate nuclear family members.

Wookiecookies · 03/01/2017 18:56

Talking... damn phone.

Wookiecookies · 03/01/2017 19:02

Besides, A hypothesis is merely that. That does not mean it the accepted paradigm.
I could hypothesise for example, that looking at the colour pink is a risk factor for chicken pox. I could undertake studies and provide long winded research, it doesnt make it a globally accepted fact though does it?

Carriecakes80 · 03/01/2017 19:02

Couldn't care less if anyone double dips! My whole family does it lol, oooh and I also dry me cups on my dressing gown lol. I see nothing wrong with it! ;-) As for the leftovers for Bubble n Squeak, Hell yeah! I gather all the kids and hubbys and my leftovers and know that, even if I was someone who got squeamish about other peoples saliva lol, I'm cooking it again anyways! Little bit of extra saliva will make it all the more juicy! lol

Revealall · 03/01/2017 19:03

We have a lid licker too. She is also the one who cuts a slice of ( communal) cake and then licks her fingers to collect any of the crumbs that might have dropped off on the plate. She then gives her open plate a good wipe with said fingers afterwards to make sure every, single, speck of cake has been swiped into her mouth....

nursy1 · 03/01/2017 19:06

As I said, not the point of the thread but I don't like being sworn at! Autoimmune diseases are linked to over zealous hygiene standards. I think you do need to look it up.

Wookiecookies · 03/01/2017 19:08

I dont like being patronised, and have flippant comments thrown out about serious medical conditions nursy. Have a fucking Biscuit
