Horrified watching my aunt prepare today's lunch...

Just checking that I'm not being super sensitive! Was at MIL's today for lunch...Aunt was in charge of potatoes which were to be boiled and covered in garlic, butter and herbs.

Lovely.

Except...not.

I had to watch her as she put the butter etc in and using a selection of utensils, repeatedly lick them after she'd stirred the potatoes...and then plunge them into the potatoes again....good stir....back into the butter dish...more licking...back into the potatoes...then back into the butter...another good lick.

Boak.

She then, coughed into the pot for good measure.

Shock

This is a bit lighthearted by the way....she's not in her dotage or anything...60 years old and perfectly together...she knew I was sititng there watching.

I had been looking forward to a nice spud! I had to refuse them and eat meat and salad!

What gets INTO some people?

OP posts:

You would have said something to her... three years after the thread was started? Hmm

madcatladyforever · 04/12/2020 07:49

i go bananas if someone licks their fingers to turn the page of my newspaper - the newspaper is binned immediately after they've gone, this would send me into total meltdown.

ILikeStrongTea · 04/12/2020 07:51

@SOboredofcleaning can you time travel back 3 years?

ZOMBIE THREAD 🙄

Lurchermom · 04/12/2020 07:53

I did a wine tasting at a very prestigious vineyard in France (I was in the industry). We tasted from a barrel and then the corner poured anything left in our glasses back into the barrel Grin waste not want not!

SOboredofcleaning · 04/12/2020 07:54

Er no @ILikeStrongTea & @RaspberryCoulis obviously I meant that, were I the OP then I would have said something to my Aunt at the time of the licking Hmm

Lurchermom · 04/12/2020 07:54

Oops didn't realise it was a zombie!

SOboredofcleaning · 04/12/2020 07:55

And who cares if it's an old thread? The incident was already in the past 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Lovemusic33 · 04/12/2020 07:58

@DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen

You'd be horrified in a professional kitchen.
Yes 🤣 I have worked in loads of kitchens and although my hygiene practices are good I have seen some pretty horrific things from other chefs including one dunking a spoon into a chicken curry (the chicken was still raw)...having a taste and then putting the spoon back in several times 🤢, I also witnessed someone serve a fish that was clearly out of date, rinsed it off under the tap and covered it in lemon juice to remove the smell (it was smelly).
AmorFattyOwlOne · 04/12/2020 07:59

well, the second post to this poster was accusing her of being a troll.

That was bizarre in my opinion.

@MrsMcMoo whenever i start a thread i'm accused of trolling too! I can only assume that this is normal for some people. Bored? Go and troll people on line Confused with a story about in laws licking their spoons and dipping back in.

I would have said something to the aunt. I couldn't watch and say nothing. I'd have been annoyed to hungry

TruculentandFarty · 04/12/2020 07:59

I sometimes do it when I cook for people that I will share a cup or spoon with... i.e. DH and kids. I usually at least rinse (not wash, I know, but running water over it). I'm very careful not to do it with other people.

Can't guarantee no dog hair though and I know that grosses many people out.

IHeartNiles · 04/12/2020 08:11

It’s grim isn’t it. Not as bad as SMILs new year buffet that involved all the leftovers from Christmas being pulled out of the fridge (we were told that they’d been in and out of the fridge for hours and on several occasions since Christmas).

ILikeStrongTea · 04/12/2020 08:13

And who cares if it's an old thread

Because it happened 3 years ago, who cares? I bet the OP doesn’t now. And it’s an odd thread to have dragged up.

G3orgeOrwell · 04/12/2020 08:21

OP you do realise she probably burped and farted on the meat and salad too?

Sparklingbrook · 04/12/2020 08:36

@SOboredofcleaning

I would have told her to stop it!!
Why have you transported us back to January 2017? Grin
Sparklingbrook · 04/12/2020 08:42

I still agree with everything I said nearly 4 years ago.Grin Grin

TwentyViginti · 04/12/2020 08:47

Why have you transported us back to January 2017?

Because it was a damn sight better than January 2021 will be? Grin

Maybe we can warn our 2020 selves to stockpile and lockdown properly 😂
Sparklingbrook · 04/12/2020 08:58

I was very ahead of my time with my anti bac wipes in my handbag always. Grin

Peppafrig · 04/12/2020 08:58

Back when all we had to worry about was people being gross .

Poppyolive90 · 04/12/2020 08:59

That’s gross. Even if just cooking for myself and DH I wouldn’t double dip whilst cooking, it’s just basic hygiene.

derxa · 04/12/2020 09:13

I always wonder about whether these germophobes ever kiss their partners.

I did read something a while ago which is sort of connected. Something like why when humans are happy to lick each other's bumholes do they send back a dirty fork in a restaurant? Grin
cdtaylornats · 04/12/2020 09:26

So how many bacteria do you think survive a dousing in boiling water?

derxa · 04/12/2020 09:29

frewer · 04/12/2020 09:30

I only realised this was a zombie when I read a post from myself under a past user name. 4 years ago, when spit was far less dangerous.....happy days.
