'Love her' 'respect him'

Namechangernottroll · 01/01/2017 16:54

Someone I used to go to school with has posted pictures of matching Tattoos saying 'Love her' (for him) and 'respect him' (for her).

It doesn't sit comfortably with me... I know it's totally up to them, not my skin or relationship but... it just seems all wrong.
The man must be respected and obeyed and the woman loved an adored... feels a bit 1950's to me.

DP says I'm massively over thinking it, I said I'd open it up to the MN jury.

sounds like she may well understand the hard way.

YorkieDorkie · 01/01/2017 17:34

You lost me at matching tattoos... bleugh!

But yes, sexist.

whattheseithakasmean · 01/01/2017 17:34

It sounds a bit sub/dom to me - like she gets a kick out of being submissive. I am not sure I would want to advertise that via the medium of a tattoo, but there you go.

AnyFucker · 01/01/2017 17:34

Do they do the surrendered wife thing ?

How embarassing for them

BestZebbie · 01/01/2017 17:35

Respect him sounds like a warning to other men who might see the tattoo.

Love her somehow seems more generic, possibly even a display of 'look, I am lovely to my girlfriends'

G1raffePicnic · 01/01/2017 17:35

I was wondering if they were Dom/sub or shades of. Lots of people get a kick from living that way.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 01/01/2017 17:39

I'd have preferred it the other way round.

Not that I would "prefer" matching tattoos under any circumstances. Confused

Brazenhussy0 · 01/01/2017 17:39

YANBU.

Soubriquet · 01/01/2017 17:39

If they both said love her/him

Or respect her/him it wouldn't be too bad

But as it stands no. It's wrong.

The women needs to respect her husband to get the love..and that's all she's worth.

Confusednotcom · 01/01/2017 17:40

Eew. She agreed to this why? Any form of inequality really gets my goat.

Wouldn't be my choice but it's not tattooed on my body so meh

ChuckSnowballs · 01/01/2017 17:46

Oh my - how putrid.

olderthanyouthink · 01/01/2017 17:47

Ick

YANBU

Lynnm63 · 01/01/2017 17:47

Surely if you're going to have them it should be love and respect for both of the tattoos. If you don't have both love and respect for each other it's a piss poor relationship imo.
Cringey though regardless of the text.

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 01/01/2017 17:48

I thought it was a biblical reference:

"However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband".

Wouldn't want it tattooed on me though!

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 01/01/2017 17:50

I hate all tattoos, so wouldn't be getting one, let alone a matching one. WTAF?

However, IF I was to do something so tacky I'd want them to be the same.

I see it differently to a lot of others who have already posted, but at least one other person sees it as I do. HE loves her, but she doesn't love him, just respects him - seems to me HE is getting the raw deal here, not her.

acatcalledjohn · 01/01/2017 17:50

Well, obviously loving each other and respecting each other is soooooo last year.

Yes, those tattoos smack of 1950s inequality to me.

Namechangernottroll · 01/01/2017 17:50

Phew! So glad IANBU!

MyWineTime · 01/01/2017 17:52

I don't think that respect = obey.
I have a huge amount of respect for my DH but I most certainly do not obey him!

However, aside from the fact that I hate tattoos, especially matching ones, I would much rather have an equal message of love and respect for each other.

Oh that sounds so like Complementarianism and Male Headship....

HappyFlappy · 01/01/2017 18:06

Agree with Kaitlin - don't have tattoos at all they're bliddy vile if you have them they should match and definitely not buy into outdated sexual mores.

Spookle · 01/01/2017 18:10

YANBU. They sound more like reminder alerts than a loving sentiment.

Lorelei76 · 01/01/2017 18:11

Awful. YANBU.
