To pronounce this name differently

DH and I like the name Felicia. But we would pronounce it 'Fuh-liss-ee-a'
rather than like Feleesha. What would you think if you saw a baby with this name? Would people always pronounce it wrong?

OP posts:

We know an Alicia (A-liss-ee-a) and a Marcia (Mar-see-a) so I would assume "Fell-iss-ee-a" by default these days.

Don't do it.

The name has an accepted pronunciation and it's short sighted to think that insisting on another pronunciation won't become a lifelong headache for your DD.

If you don't like names ending in -eesha just go back to the drawing board and find something else. I don't even find Felicia an especially attractive name, however it's pronounced.

"I had no idea that the 'proper' pronunciation would be Fel-eesha"

It isn't.

I was just about to mention "bye Felicia". It is from the film "Friday" and people tend to use it as an insult.

I would pronounce this Fel-ees-ee-uh and think it's really pretty, but I don't like Fel-eesh-uh and that's how a lot of people would pronounce it.

I think you are being very naive if you think kids won't tease about fellatio, I'd say it's a dead certainty

Would you say the same to any parent thinking of naming their daughter Felicity? I think that unless her name ACTUALLY is Fellatio, it's not a dead certainty, especially if pronounced Fel-iss-ee-a. The DD might go by 'Fliss' or something anyway. It's ludicrous to suggest that she will automatically get teased for her name and insulting to those parents who have named their daughter Felicia. I would have a different view if for example the OP was thinking of something like Fanny. in that case, I would say that teasing is more or less guaranteed.

Rubbish. Both pronunciations are accepted. The OP's way is how the Spanish pronounce it.

Call your kid whatever you want. Half of this board seem to be very ignorant when it comes to saying names correctly so I wouldn't even listen to those rattling on.

This. You are pronouncing it the correct English way. Sorry, but personally I would view people who pronounced it the other way as very common. It's been like nails on a blackboard reading people lecturing you on mispronouncing it when they are the ones in the wrong in this country.

And 'Bye Felicia' will be about as relevant as 'Jimmy Hill' is now by the time she's a teenager so ignore that.

As soon as I saw it I read it the way you wanted it pronounced so it wouldn't necessarily always get said incorrectly

And I went to school with a Felicia and never heard the fellatio tease.

Yes, the accepted pronunciation is Fell-iss-ia

Would people really pronounce it as Fel-ee-sha? I'm afraid I'd judge if someone did this!

Ok, this was actually what I wanted to say, but wasn't quite brave enough!

The Fel-ee-sha pronunciation really smacks of too much X-Factor and not enough education.

There, I've said it.

People who don't know her (or you) will tend to pronounce it how it is spelled. So most likely pronounced Felishia. People with an RP accent, may pronounce it Fullissia or with a very short 'e' or 'u'. It's a lovely name, so it depends on how much correcting you're prepared for.

Felicity is much nicer the only name out of the two that is actually nice

Names ending in 'eesha' are quite popular in certain segments of the Caribbean community. So please continue with your casual racism estate

I can't imagine anyone would pronounce it "Felishia"??

To all those who are telling you to stick with the 'correct' pronunciaion.

There is no 'correct' pronunciation of any name!! It all depends on where in the world (and country) you live as to what the 'accepted local' pronunciation is. What's uncommon where you live may be unusual somewhere else.

Please be a bit more open minded.

OP, your way is the accepted way as far as I know. It's pronouced Feleesha in the States but Felissia here. I can clearly recall a Jackanory story ( Grin ) called Felicia the Critic, and it was pronounced Felissia. I've met one or two women with the name pronounced Felissia. No Feleeshas.

Sorry, but that racism comment made me fucking lol. There's always one, some people could find racism at a black lives matter march at a Pentecostal church in Nigeria.

VladmirsPoutine · 01/01/2017 15:34

Bill Carry on laughing, your ignorance would be funny were it not so tragic. Racism doesn't need to present itself so forthrightly to be considered actual racism. You have absolutely zero idea.

I'd pronounce it Fell - ee- sha in the same way we say Pa - tri - sha (Patricia.) or Trisha (for short.)
We don't say Pat- ree-see-a.
