well, speaking as a teacher (Deputy Head) myself, i don't think it is unreasonable. Maybe it has meant that you have had to take time off - fair enough. But we don't all work in conditions where we can pick and choose our days off unlike in ohter professions. and by the way i don't think it is appropraite for just the Head to represent the school - in lots of schools, mine included, the head is one of the newer members of staff and loads of our teachers and Teaching assistants would rather pay their respects than him. When one of our TAs died last year, the funeral was on the last day of term ( we close at 2pm on last day of term anyway) so we closed at 1pm so we could all attend the funeral - not a problem from any parents.
BTW - Inset days are usually published quite far in advance (we usually publish all 5 of ours in September) Snow days are unavoidable - staff travel from all over. Any time we make the big decision of closing the school it is ALWAYS for the safety of the children and not cos we fancy a day or an afternoon off

My ds and dd had a half day when the caretaker's funeral was on, dd2's school had a half day when the head's dh died. All reasonable, when compared to the fact they had a day off for the pope's funeral. They don't go to Catholic schools although in Ireland!

i don't think it's unreasonable, my DD's school closed for the whole day when a child died so all staff could go to the funeral DS school closed for the day when his TA husband was murdered so that staff could go to the funeral, i would be upset if they didn't close to be honest, it's only one day afterall.

its a primary school - 60 kids in each year reception through to yr 6

I dont complain about inset days I know they are needed

The snow day was farcicle because the weather was worse the following day and they were back in school then.

Although sound slike quiet a large primary, that is still probably only 14 teachers (FT) and maybe a handful of TAs, so I can imagine quite a close knit staffroom where each teacher knows each other to chat too and spend time with at least at work. Not like secondary where there are loads of teachers and you can go days without seaking to some of them. I can understand why these teachers want to go to the funeral.

Someone has died. And his or her colleagues obviously liked and respected him/her a lot.

People die once (as far as I know) and it's a seedy state of affairs when you can't attend their funeral if you really want to.

I would be surprised if my sons' school remained open (although it is a far smaller school).

In relation to children attending funerals - I would say that's down to parents, rather than the school. If I thought it appropriate for any of my children to attend a funeral, they would attend, no matter what the school's stance was.

the school havent offered any details of the actual funeral other than to say it is this afternoon. They were closing so the staff could attend. I assume there will be a memorial service at the local church for the children

Closing school for funeral if enough staff really want to go and they haven't got sufficient cover would be ok by me. Staff in our school wouldn't be paid so they must really want/need to go if they're happy with that.

Sounds like staff haven't been in at all in the holidays, so guess that's why it's so short notice. It's a shame the head didn't think it'd be fair to notify parents in advance though.
