It's a good thing for children to see that routine stuff stops whilst people pay their respects at a funeral. Especially in this day and age where we rush everywhere.

no im not pissed at the teacher dying FGS Im pissed that they keep closing the school

The alternative was that we could pay the after school club apparently. Of course there are such things as supply teachers

and Hula I think you mean "plaque" not "plague"

although both would be appropriate

I don't think you are being completely unreasonable. The bloody schools make enough fuss when you need time off. I understand that some of the staff should be there, but surely its the head teachers job to represent the rest of the staff. You can't tell me that EVERY member of staff was best friends with the deceased!

oops = yes, mean plaque!

What type of school is it by the way - primary? secondary? big or small? Think a lot of that has a bearing on whether all teachers would be wanting to attend.

They should have staff still in school to supervise those where the parents would be struggling with work because of it.

So yes, I guess I would be a bit pissed tbh.

Sounds like exceptional circumstances, and if you had notice, it's not unreasonable...Assume a lot of the kids will want to go?

(Why are you all saying PISSED, btw, like a bunch of Americans? It's pissed OFF !)

You know, schools are not there for childcare. Good grief, g*d forbid you should be responsible for your children whilst the teachers mourn a colleague and friend. There are such things as supply teachers but OBVIOUSLY a teacher on the senior staff would have to remain at school. Seeing as all the teachers wanted to be at the funeral the school could not legally be run by supply teachers I'm sure. I'm shocked at this lack of understanding and this type of attitude that teachers are trying to slack off when they have in service days(oh, snow days, did it occur to you that maybe staff who don't live within 2 miles of the school, may not have been able to safely get to work) btw I saw the cod, this isn't aimed at you. Oh this has made me SO angry

Tbh, it does seem a little extreme to me to shut the whole school. Perhaps a selection of staff should have gone to represent the school?

I don't know. I'm just surprised the whole school is shut I suppose.

Is is secondary school jammy?

Slug of vodka in the tea and I may take you up on that cod

If a big school, I'd sort of expect maybe only that department/year group group of staff to be very keen to attend.
Surely we are talking a small primary here though in this context? In which case, more notice would have been good, but I can understand all the staff wanting to attend.
I can think of several teachers at the dc's school whose funerals I would wish to attend myself and not to make sure they really were dead, either...
Did you not know the teacher then jampot? I guess not

think you're being unreasonable, it's like a mark of respect for the member of staff. what's 1/2 a day out of the entire year?

and it's not the schools that set the targets with regards to taking time off school - its the government. blame tony

Report
donnie · 20/02/2007 14:57

well I do feel targets relating to teacher deaths need to be put in place asap. Then death league tables could also be introduced.
