I suspect I am. But We are going to the cinema around lunchtime and I will be hungry. I don't like nachos, popcorn or hotdogs or anything else like to be on offer and I have a fridge full of lovely things left from Christmas.

Am I wrong to be tempted to smuggle in a cheese and pickle sarnie?

I dunno, I'm sure I've heard stories of people being stopped taking food into the cinema. Actually I vaguely seem to recollect some cinemas even have sign's saying only food brought on the premises can be consumed in the cinema, or something like that.

expatinscotland · 30/12/2016 12:22

Everything smells rank to someone.

SapphireStrange · 30/12/2016 12:25

My friend got stopped because she wanted to take in a coffee she'd bought elsewhere. She asked the counter staff for a cinema-permissible cup to pour it into but they refused; apparently the management count the cups against drinks sold, so they know if staff have thrown or given any away.

Pretty miserable job, really.

BadLad · 30/12/2016 12:30

But I do think the Cinema should pick off phone users and eject them sharpish to a rousing round of audience applause.

Agreed - cinemas tend to have that in their rules.

But they are happy - indeed encouraging - for me to eat in their cinema, and I'm happy to eat there, so it's fuck all to do with anybody else.

Sallystyle · 30/12/2016 13:06

Misophonia is a thing. It runs in my family, my dad and brother are so bad they eat alone away from other people. I think it's learnt behaviour in my case. I didn't know it had a name until it became a 'cool' thing to have. I'm not saying that everyone who claims to have it are lying, but not liking noises doesn't come close to the rage that people feel when they really do have it.

It is awful. I sometimes feel such a rage I feel like I could hurt someone and get horrible thoughts. It's my issue though and I take myself away from the noise if I need to and I do not expect people to change their behaviours. It's no one else's problem except mine. My dad used to make it into my problem and it sucked to be scared to eat. I will not do that to anyone else.

Eating in the cinema is normal. Some people here seem to shit on everything. 'You should be able to manage two hours without food',' you shouldn't eat food that has any smell'. Get over yourselves. How the fuck some of you manage in the real world I will never know.

Mindtrope · 30/12/2016 13:20

People eat in the cinema because it's fun to eat something nice while watching something entertaining.
Double the pleasure if you like.

Who doesn't settle down at home to watch something good on TV and eat chocolate or a tasty snack?

One of life's pleasures.

I wonder, too. DS has ASD and I have PTSD and it does put limits on many things, but hey ho, that's our problem, not the rest of the world's.

Oooohhhhhhh who mentioned Mintolas, I haven't had them in years

GimmeeMoore · 30/12/2016 13:35

I only eat Mintola in cinema. They're a proper treat

1horatio · 30/12/2016 13:43

I don't eat in the cinema. DH does and I don't care when others do.

I unfortunately love to talk during movies, so I actually kind of prefer watching one at home...

But I ate a whole bowl of lychees whilst watching a movie this Christmas... but I also had a lot of lychees during the present opening. And for Christmas breakfast... so, yeah. 😂

1horatio · 30/12/2016 13:43

I have to google what mintolas are...

SapphireStrange · 30/12/2016 13:45

Do Mintolas still even exist?? Shock I loved them.

woodhill · 30/12/2016 13:47

I would take sweets and a drink but would never want to eat much. Wouldn't take a sandwich.

Not keen to pay silly prices of refreshments in cinema. It's expensive to see the film in the first place.

AnnaFiveTowns · 30/12/2016 14:15

Eating snacks, popcorn, ice cream etc. is all part and parcel of the whole cinema experience - and it always has been.

Sorry, not sure what happened there.

ExcellentWorkThereMary · 30/12/2016 15:48

Is misophonia specific to the sound of people eating? I've never seen anyone mention it in any other context (to be fair I've never heard of it other than on MN)

BBCNewsRave · 30/12/2016 16:21

I think misophonia can involve different noises, ExcellentWork.

I can't work out if I've got it, or if it's just people with no manners slurping and chomping with their mouths open and reasonable to find it so painful to hear/see. Normal eating noises I'm fine with, but that makes me want to scream and whimper and my skin crawls.

WeatherwaxOrOgg · 30/12/2016 17:55

The food is how the cinemas make their money - hardly any of the ticket price goes to them.

A few years ago I always used to take food in because it was too expensive for me to buy inside but nowadays I always buy the cinema food, although I do wish there was more variety.

I was actually really surprised that hardly anyone seems to be aware that this is how they make their money. I mean that completely non-judgementally, I think perhaps they should publicise that fact a bit more because when you realise that you maybe feel a little less irritated at the high prices. It's a different situation to the greed of the theme parks where they charge huge ticket prices AND rip you off for the food as well.

As I've been in the situation of having to bring my own food in in the past I fully understand why people do it but it always worries me slightly that cinemas will go out of business because of it though.

Lizsmum · 30/12/2016 17:56

I go to live broadcasts of operas at the cinema. Sometimes the perror Mancetter is 5 hours long. Every person (average age about 65) takes food to eat in the long interval and many take wine. The cinema staff seem to think this is perfectly acceptable. Maybe it's because we are mostly grey haired or bald.

Fadingmemory · 30/12/2016 17:57

I smuggle in popcorn and nachos because I refuse to pay extortionate cinema prices. You are definitely not being unreasonable.

marylennoxwasanaspie · 30/12/2016 17:59

We always get our popcorn at the supermarket round the corner and take it in discreetly.

TrapDoorInACanoe · 30/12/2016 18:04

We usually buy a large bag of goodies from Asda if we're going to the cinema: individual bottles of Diet Coke, various chocolate bars, and depending whether it's a good day or a bad day, diet-wise, a selection of fruit. Don't know if you're actually not allowed to bring in your own stuff, so we always surreptitiously stash it away in our suitably large handbags. Much, much cheaper than buying cinema stuff.

Cutesbabasmummy · 30/12/2016 18:05

We always take our own food in! I don't want to eat popcorn, nachos or cold hotdogs!
