To say terrestrial tv has been rubbish this Xmas and new year

I've just looked at the terrestrial tv listings for New Year's Eve and day and they are pretty rubbish imo. Lots of old films and repeats. And although I haven't seen much tv over Xmas as visiting I haven't seen much in the tv magazine that I've missed. We have Netflix and stuff but I feel annoyed that BBC can't be bothered to make any decent programmes.

Just watched Ethel and Ernest, loved it.

Yadnbu though, the TV has in general been shit, and have I missed Elf? Couldn't find it at all!!

Figgygal · 28/12/2016 21:32

There was no elf this year apparently none of the broadcasters showed it

I'm just hanging on for Sherlock tbh

elQuintoConyo · 28/12/2016 21:32

Come to Spain....

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 28/12/2016 21:33

I think Elf was bought up by sky a few years ago and this year was only available to download.

twinklefoot · 28/12/2016 21:33

YANBU no back to back films. Where's Gone with the Wind et al?

Sparklingbrook · 28/12/2016 21:37

Love Actually has been on an awful lot.

tiej · 28/12/2016 21:41

If you hate animation, like me, it's been a particularly bad Christmas.

bloodyteenagers · 28/12/2016 21:47

Are you really surprised?
Just look at other weeks. Loads of rubbish, even more repeats and the occasional new thing every couple of months, usually coinciding when Beeb is getting slated for the rubbish it shows. You would think they would be keen to show all the new and innovative stuff they claim to make.

Squeegle · 28/12/2016 22:27

What about the fleetwood mac thing on now? That is great!

BIgBagofJelly · 28/12/2016 22:29

Ethel and Ernest was absolutely amazing! Also liked watching revolting rhymes and the mouse and mole (I think?) with my DS 4.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 28/12/2016 22:30

We haven't had tv for years now and just use Netflix etc. Haven't 'missed' anything this year. Would like to see sherlock but imagine it will be out on DVD/on netflix at some point.

Kai1977 · 28/12/2016 22:32

A lot of stuff has been brought by certain pay TV companies (Elf for example). Some of the good stuff is still to come, like Sherlock and a new period drama from Sally Wainwright who wrote Happy Valley and Last Tango in Paris (assuming you like that).

I enjoyed Bake off and Witness for the Prosecution too.

There is less good stuff on generally because it's spread through the year on many more channels than ever before. We are more spoilt for choice than ever when you take into account the likes of Netflix.

EsmesBees · 28/12/2016 22:34

Inside number nine was good. Dark as Hell but good.

Charlie Brooker will be worth watching this year.

SloanyAnne · 28/12/2016 22:34

Yadnbu
It's been utter, utter shite.

MatildaTheCat · 28/12/2016 22:36

Windsors at Christmas made me laugh. Revolting Rhymes was great and E&E lovely. Haven't watched Agatha Christie yet. Also enjoyed Darcy Bussell and Alan Bennett. Depends what you like I guess.

leccybill · 28/12/2016 22:36

Have only watched Revolting Rhymes, Bear Hunt and Paul O'Grady For the love of Dogs at Christmas.

Everything else on terrestrial was rubbish.

thebakerwithboobs · 28/12/2016 22:44

I really enjoyed Call the Midwife but other than that nothing has grabbed me-TV has been pretty much off since the Queen! I blame this for the fact that none of our children are speaking to each other after a very heated round of Monopoly.

GilMartin · 28/12/2016 22:57

There was something about this on Front Row. TV companies have given up on Christmas TV. The way we watch TV has changed and people don't plonk themselves down as a family and watch hour after hour of live TV.

Squeegle · 28/12/2016 23:20

Yes I also very much enjoyed Alan Bennett and the lady in the van I am officially middle aged!

Salmotrutta · 28/12/2016 23:31

Has anyone mentioned that there is a Sherlock episode on New Year's Day yet?

That'll be my highlight! Grin

Salmotrutta · 28/12/2016 23:32

Oops - I see Kai mentioned Sherlock!

Salmotrutta · 28/12/2016 23:33

And Twogoats Blush

CaraAspen · 28/12/2016 23:48

Last Tango is HALIFAX, surely!?

Confusednotcom · 28/12/2016 23:57

The Windsors is v v v funny but I've not seen it advertised?

SanityAssassin · 29/12/2016 00:14

Agree terrestrial TV is done. Wish someone would start one of those petitions to be heard in Parliament to get rid of the TV licence we all have to pay to receive nothing in return (but overpaid washed out so called Celebs) - it's a dictatorial tax that should be abolished - it was necessary I suppose when they needed it to fund the only broadcasting there was but now there are plenty of broadcasting suppliers of quality output. I resent having to pay this to own a device that can receive their stuff even if I have no intention of watching it - it's a bloody monopoly this Country should be bloody ashamed it still continues.
