To think the acting in Harry Potter is really bad?

Referring primarily to the main three.

I haven't seen the films in so long but watched them when they've been on this week and it's so bad.

I adore DR in everything I've seen him in, as himself or as a character he always makes me a bit warm and fuzzy.

Ginny was diabolical, the love scenes with her and Harry were cringe worthy which is a shame because I love the way she's written in the book.

I don't mind Gambon as Dumbledore but I will never get over "DID YA PUT YA NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIYAH?!!" I sat in the cinema like this ShockAngryShock

FixItUpChappie · 30/12/2016 01:10

Lol squash that made me laugh and I know exactly what scene you mean!! GrinGrin

CaptainCallisto · 30/12/2016 07:41

Squash I was sitting in the cinema going 'calmly! It says calmly!'

dailymaillazyjournos · 30/12/2016 07:56

YANBU. They are heinous to the point of embarrassing to watch, throughout.
I don't know how or why child actors in the US are nearly always amazingly good while UK ones sound and move with the conviction of a wooden puppet.

HermioneWoozle · 30/12/2016 08:26

Having watched the HBP again last night I thought they were all fab in it and it was lovely to see the obvious chemistry that developed over the series between the actors. Ginny makes me laugh and clap, she has some great lines. I feel very maternal towards them all whenever I see a HP film, even Draco towards the end of the series.

wanderings · 30/12/2016 08:32

I agree that one of the best of all was Luna; she was perfect. I especially liked the scene in Order of the Phoenix when (barefoot) she explains to Harry about Thestrals. Also near the end of the film, she says "I think I'll have some pudding" and skips off.

JoffreyBaratheon · 30/12/2016 12:17

Draco and Luna could both act, and from the first time you see them, I thought.

Odd how I didn't notice at the time how truly abysmal Hermione was (and Ron in the first film - he got the part because he could do the scared face, apparently, and to be fair he did nail that).

Also those Weasley twins - watching it again, I can't believe I didn't notice how dreadful their acting was.

1horatio · 30/12/2016 12:23

Draco is great. How I hated him when I was a kid/young teen.

Luna is also awesome and I actually don't mind Ron.

Harry was portrayed as a quite wooden character. But that actually worked in a way? Harry being rather expressionless and socially incompetent kind of works.

1horatio · 30/12/2016 12:25

I remember that I was quite smitten by the guy playing Oliver Wood, tbh.

Rewatched the movie a few months ago (the first and the 2nd) and realized that he was one of the better actors.
Ginny is horrible in the chamber of secrets.

LaurieMarlow · 30/12/2016 12:43

Yeah. They're pretty dire.

Shout out to Rupert for not being too bad, particularly after chamber of secrets when he learnt to tone down the facial expressions marginally. He's at least capable of making me laugh.

Daniel Radcliffe has done some good stuff post Potter and actually I think he was miscast as Harry. Harry needs more spirit to avoid being boring. DR's too earnest.

Hermione/Ginny are fucking diabolical though. I'm in a permanent state of cringe when watching them, especially during any emotionally fraught scenes. How I pity the directors.

I've never seen any evidence that Emma Watson can act at all. I mean, beyond 'adequate for a school performance'. I've really liked some of her modelling work though.

Agree that Draco was good from the start.

Bodicea · 30/12/2016 12:47

Can't watch them as Hermione's over expressive eyebrows drive me insane.
She is possibly the worst actor ever. Proper drama schools brat. How she has had success after is beyond me. Can't believe she is cast as Belle, so gutted!!!

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 30/12/2016 12:50

@1horatio oh yes, Sean Biggerstaff (fnarr)

JoffreyBaratheon · 30/12/2016 12:55

Neville turned out alright.

BitchQueen90 · 30/12/2016 13:05

YANBU. Haven't read the whole thread but has anyone else noticed that thing Draco Malfoy continuously does with his eyebrows in Chamber of Secrets? 😂 Emma Watson is DREADFUL. She talks way too fast and agree with PP about the overpronunciation. 😩

My HP film favourites were Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy and Helena Bonham Carter.

JoffreyBaratheon · 30/12/2016 15:01

I genuinely did think Daniel R could act, and could act before he was even in HP. HP is meant to be a bit of a dull 'everyman', surely, so we can project whatever we want on to him?

Ron improved over time, as did Neville. Others were good from the start. Whilst Hermione was also dull and pedantic - isn't that the point of her? Although the actor really couldn't act, and unlike Neville and Ron, didn't improve. Then again she was prissy and annoying so probably... job done.

1horatio · 30/12/2016 15:30

I agree.

HP was an abused kid under a lot of pressure, there really wasn't an outward show of a whole lot of personality, tbh.
