To think the acting in Harry Potter is really bad?

Referring primarily to the main three.

I haven't seen the films in so long but watched them when they've been on this week and it's so bad.

Yanbu! The acting is horrendous. I live for the books though.

specialsubject · 28/12/2016 23:06

I love the weasley twins - took a while to be convinced that they aren't a special effect.. Smile

In the position of the three principals it might have been time to do a john deacon from queen - 'right, thats it, job done , have enough money now'. Tricky at 18 or so.

FuzzyWizard · 28/12/2016 23:09

1horatio- I agree. I also loved him in A Young Doctor's Notebook.

1horatio · 28/12/2016 23:10

fuzzy

Haven't watched that.

I also really liked Redmaine (?) as Newt. And in the Danish girl.

RubyRoseViolet · 28/12/2016 23:10

Totally agree op! I'm not a huge fan anyway but that was my thought after seeing the first film. Those 3 kids.....out of all the children they must have seen! So wooden!

Sugarcoma · 28/12/2016 23:24

It's awful. I couldn't watch any of the films after seeing the first one despite loving the books. All three leads are bad but Emma Watson especially is a terribly wooden actress.

haveacupoftea · 28/12/2016 23:35

Yeah i've been thinking this too. Am enjoying watching the films again though, theyre visually stunning and nearly all of the actors are fantastic.

FireSquirrel · 28/12/2016 23:37

Evanna Lynch hasn't done porn ffs! She's done one nude scene in a film. There is a porn actress who touts herself as a Luna Lovegood lookalike (though i don't think she looks much like her at all) but it isn't Evanna Lynch.

Evanna Lynch is awesome and has done some activism (pro gay rights and for anorexia awareness, I think).

I just really liked Hermione as a character, so I had much higher expectations, I think.

gillybeanz · 29/12/2016 00:15

Fire

I must be thinking of the lookalike, or ds1 has heard it was her. People must really believe it's her, especially as she will be different now to how they remember her.
It can't be good for her career.

BadLad · 29/12/2016 00:23

Not enough praise for the acting of Mad-Eye Moody in this thread.

SpottedScarf · 29/12/2016 00:49

YADNBU

However, it's all part of the charm!

AldrinJustice · 29/12/2016 01:19

I always thought they matched the actors not by how good their acting is but by how much they looked like the character described in the book! Yanbu

ConcreteUnderpants · 29/12/2016 03:46

Daniel R is bad. Very bad.
Emma Watson is still appalling. Saw her in 'Regression' last year (if you haven't seen it, don't bother, it's shit) and it was almost painful.
What about the Weasley twins? They make my teeth ache.

FixItUpChappie · 29/12/2016 03:56

I thought Radcliffe was the weakest of the main three and the Malfoy kid was awful IMO. I think Richard
Harris was an ideal Dumbledore and that Gambon over played it - he lacked the twinkle, the mysteriousness and didn't convey that sense of wisdom I felt was conveyed about the character in the books.

HermioneWoozle · 29/12/2016 03:58

I think they are a bit clunky in the first couple of films, but were very young and some only had done school plays. It doesn't bother me much though. Percy Weasley is the worst- I notice they don't give him much to do other than looking a bit cross/smug in OTTP Smile.

I think they are ok by film 3 and pretty good after that - very good in the last two. DR is a fantastic actor, in particular.

BadLad · 29/12/2016 04:14

I assume there weren't that many ginger-haired identical male twins in their late teens so they had to take what they could get.

neonrainbow · 29/12/2016 04:30

Evanna lynch was absolutely perfect as luna... but she wasnt even an actress from what i gather. Some of the supporting cast of children aren't too bad but overall the nain 3 are diabolical especially harry. Even if maggie smith did recommend him, how on earth did the casting director not just go... nope, not good enough.

There was a film of peter pan out at a similar time and Rachel hurd wood played Wendy. She would have made a good hermione. Absolutely anyone else would have made a better harry.

It's such a shame as in years to come the films will prbably be remade but they'll never have such an amazing adult cast of british stars assembled ever again.

Also think the films could have definitely benfitted from one director for the whole series.

HermioneWoozle · 29/12/2016 05:03

F&G are great.

What annoys me slightly is the different directors' take on things such as the dementors' appearance. Totally different in film 3 and film 5. The film 3 ones are far scarier looking, more like ring wraiths in LOTR.

And the change in Professor Flitwick's appearance I'd only just noticed as I've never watched the films back to back before- thought it was a different character.

Also only just noticed Colin (and Dennis) Creevey are ditched for Nigel Wolport.

The one that annoys me most though is ditching Peeves, and that there is not even any footage of Rik Mayall's role anywhere.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 29/12/2016 05:26

I caught some of the films on TV over Christmas - I've never read the books, they just don't appeal to me. Emma Watson is HUGELY annoying, and I agree with the PP who said she's not looking forward to her portraying Belle in 'Beauty And The Beast' - personally, I think she's too much of a little madam for the part.

I feel almost maternal pride over Daniel Radcliffe, though - he's chosen very diverse roles since HP, and he's a fine actor. 'My Boy Jack' always reduces me to a sobbing wreck.

Fallonjamie · 29/12/2016 05:27

Daniel Radcliffe isn't convincing as a human being.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 29/12/2016 09:39

They're dark haired in real life, aren't they?

They just dyed their hair for the part.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 29/12/2016 10:26

That's right - not ginger in RL. Very wooden in the first film but got better by the end. Neville got better by the end. Most of them did.

SherlockPotter · 29/12/2016 12:19

I seriously hope Harry Potter is never remade or made into a tv series... it'd ruin it, for me anyway!

I'm retracting my earlier comment.. 1-2 are okay, not the best (The Chamber of Secrets got the same ratings as the best Twilight film), 3-4 are better but 5-8 are the best ones.

I can't see Emma Watson as Belle, don't get me wrong I like her but she's the wrong person for it.
