To be terrified of my first filling

I'm so bloody scared! It's tomorrow morning and I'm terrified 😪

I'm having thoughts of cancelling it :(

You'll be fine, honestly.

One thing to bear in mind when you have the local - a good dentist will take his/her time injecting it into your gum because (as my dentist has explained) it is much more effective when injected slowly. So don't be alarmed if you think it's taking too long - in this case longer is better. If you have numbing gel on first you won't even feel it - and even if you don't, literally after the first couple of seconds its already kicking in on the gum surface, so you don't feel the rest.

Good luck!

Champagneformyrealfriends · 27/12/2016 22:59

Top ones are fine-don't worry. I held the dental nurses hand when I had mine and I didn't feel a thing. It got a bit awkward after a bit because I didn't need the hand hold but she was being so sweet to me I felt bad rejecting her kindness Grin.

Honestly op you'll be posting here tomorrow saying it was ok. Flowers

Take your iPod and put some music on with one headphone. I find it goes much quicker of I'm listening to something.

sarahquilt · 27/12/2016 23:27

You've done well to only be getting a filling now. I got my first filling as a small child.

WinterIsHereJon · 27/12/2016 23:29

Think I need a new dentist, I found having fillings horrific.

blinkineckmum · 27/12/2016 23:39

The procedure is not scary. But personally I hated the feeling of the anaesthetic wearing off. It made me feel very nauseous and weepy, but that might just be me?

StarryIllusion · 28/12/2016 00:17

You'll be in there about 45 minutes but most of that is waiting for the injection to work and then a further 5 minutes while they mix the filling material. The actual drilling and poking and puggling about is only about 20 minutes and they keep stopping every few seconds to see what they are doing and have a little scrape about. It's really quite boring.

Hatade16 · 28/12/2016 09:27

15 mins to go and I'm having a huge panic attack

NancyDonahue · 28/12/2016 09:32

Just think of the relief when it's done op. I find thinking about my children or walking somewhere I love while lying in the chair really helps. Your mumsnet friends are with you Flowers

backwardpossom · 28/12/2016 09:37

Breathe, OP. It will be absolutely fine - you wont feel a thing. Flowers

YelloDraw · 28/12/2016 09:44

It shouldn't hurt. If at any point you even feel the very beginning of pain - stop the dentist and they will go in with more anaesthetic.

Supermagicsmile · 28/12/2016 10:19

You'll be fine op.

YABVU. Pathetic attitude from an adult.

hazeyjane · 28/12/2016 10:22

who knew that a word and a string of random numbers could be so bold and blatant in being such a cock piece.

NancyDonahue · 28/12/2016 10:31

Totally agree hazeyjane.

You should be done now op, hope you're ok. Ignore the cock piece above.

Hatade16 · 28/12/2016 10:36

It's done!! It was fine honestly. Only bit that felt weird was the filling and drilling

YABVU. Pathetic attitude from an adult.

It's called a phobia.. maybe you should try googling it.

Well done Hatade. What a fantastic step you have taken.

good dentists completely understand why people of any age can have fears around going to the dentist.

NancyDonahue · 28/12/2016 10:40

Brilliant, well done!

Hatade16 · 28/12/2016 10:58

Just really not liking this numb feeling, her getting abit of pain. He said it was a really deep filling so he put some stuff in first before he put the filling in x

akittencalledjesus · 28/12/2016 12:06

Well done OP! Glad it was not as scary as you thought! Did they use the numbing gel in the end?

I have reported user for being a goady fucker. Why on earth would you go to the effort to create an account just to be a cunt to someone? You'd have to be a very sad & lonely sort.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/12/2016 12:13

Glad its all over. Well done.

User 147. What a disgusting attitude.
You can be too old for many things, but Not fear and anxiety.
Anyway why am I feeding it.!!!

Hatade16 · 28/12/2016 12:27

Yes I asked for the numbing gel 😂🙈

The feeing is coming back now and it's starting to ache :(

OP posts:
StarryIllusion · 28/12/2016 13:17

It'll hurt for a day or two. You're not used to having them pulled about. Take some ibuprofen and it'll be fine. Well done op.

akittencalledjesus · 28/12/2016 14:21

I don't blame you OP, it's worth it for reducing the stress you feel. Now that I know dentists offer it I will always ask for it if I need work done, just to reduce my anxiety levels.

Soreness is to be expected, but shouldn't last too long. The soreness I normally experience is some muscle ache bruising from keeping my mouth wide open and my jaw being prodded and pulled a bit.

Nothing a bit of numbing gel or over the counter painkillers can't fix Smile
