Maybe it's scripted.
Maybe not.

Surprised at Hammond. Normally it would be Clarkson. Very surprised James May is on the show. He comes across as a decent guy.

Still, I suppose it will be defended as banter. Hmm

Clarkson scripted most of TG so I would think he does the same on this show.

Very obviously scripted.

amispartacus · 27/12/2016 10:44

Hammond is trending on Twitter.

That's not normally a good thing to be doing.
Still, the memes are quite funny.

Thanks for that link.

Mostly because of this:

I wouldn't be surprised if he ate his "ice cream" in the closet, actually. (The criticism being the closet, not the ice cream, just to be clear)

DonutParade · 27/12/2016 10:47

It's ok Wolpertinger, the fact he bought the ice-cream maker for YOU offsets the homosexual panic in the eyes of fuckwits

BertrandRussell · 27/12/2016 10:48

Richard Hammond is an arsehole. Who knew?

Wolpertinger · 27/12/2016 10:49

This seems to be the right place to link to Stewart Lee:

'It's just a joke, like on Top Gear'
'Richard Hammond, the bully's mate laughing at their jokes in hope they won't pick on him'

Lweji · 27/12/2016 10:51

In our family we like the Science of Stupid.
I blame Clarkson.
And that accident Hammond was in.

Notmyname123 · 27/12/2016 10:51

He's now claiming it was irony and subtlety. I think I'll send him a dictionary with the definitions of those words highlighted and bookmarked.

Fauchelevent · 27/12/2016 10:54

Irony? Is this him coming out then?

FurryLittleTwerp · 27/12/2016 10:57

Urgh, DH has bought an Amazon Fire Stick just so he can drool over watch Clarkson et al's new stupid car programme.

I sat through about ten minutes the other day - they were trying to weigh sports cars using animal carcasses - truly vile & totally pointless - not in the least bit funny IMO, though DH was laughing like a drain Hmm

Agree James May ought to get on with more of his interesting & vaguely scientific stuff - far superior Confused

insancerre · 27/12/2016 10:59

I think Hammond is more mini milk than magnum

FurryLittleTwerp · 27/12/2016 11:00

ha ha Grin

user1471545174 · 27/12/2016 11:00

Why is anyone disappointed in these idiots?

SunshineInTheRain · 27/12/2016 11:00

I'm seeing a euro trash style you tube vids with these guys heads on chip & dale bodies & lots of ice lollies being passed round a hot tub.

liz70 · 27/12/2016 11:04

I could only ever take a remark so absurd as that as tongue-in-cheek.

Badcat666 · 27/12/2016 11:04

LMFAO!!!

Did you watch the actual show?? (or ever watch the old Top Gear shows)

If you did then you would understand the dynamics of the show. For YEARS they have ribbed Hammond for getting his teeth whitened and using hair dye and doing his hair and wearing certain items of clothing and it was Hammond getting his own back.

It was all about car interior colours and Hammond was being a dick and trying to imply Clarkson was gay for eating ice cream in his car and worrying about spoiling the seat covers etc.

Instead of reading a one off article about the show and then thinking the sky is falling in you would understand more about the show and the 3 of them before raising the pitchforks.

It's 3 old farts being plonkers, making themselves look stupid to make ppl laugh at them and being paid loads of cash to do it.

You don't have to watch it or let your precious offspring watch it.

amispartacus · 27/12/2016 11:07

I think it's called normalised homophobia. Just throwaway comments.

Still, if you've got to resort to such tactics to generate cheap publicity, it does say something about you.

Hammond is 47. Hardly an old fart.

Still, if he and the team feel the need to make such a joke, that's his choice.

Of course, it doesn't matter if children who see that then bully and target boys who eat ice cream and call them gay and bully them. Does it?

ComputerUserNumptyTwit · 27/12/2016 11:18

How many posters have actually watched the show?

Lweji · 27/12/2016 11:20

I used to watch the old TG.
It was still idiotic to imply Hammond was gay.
Not only it normalises homophobia, as it stereotypes gender. As in you can't be a proper man if you eat ice cream, whiten your teeth, dye your hair.

coldcanary · 27/12/2016 11:21

Yeah I've watched all of them so far, badcat some of it's pretty funny but frankly the more the show goes on the more boring it's getting. They're great at reviewing cars but it's less about cars now than the egos of 3 middle aged men who need to move on and realise that giving a big old FU to the BBC because they didn't get their own way is making them look childish and petulant now.
James May is a great presenter and needs to do more of his own stuff, Hammond isn't too bad either, the science of stupid really suits his presenting style and even Clarkson can do documentaries quite well.

Badcat666 · 27/12/2016 11:22

That episode was classed as a "15" so I very much doubt young children would be watching it and then going around calling people gay for having an ice cream. Also Hammond was shot down by Clarkson and he told the audience off for clapping him.

www.bbfc.co.uk/releases/grand-tour-2016-3

Strange thing is my "gay" friends watched it and never threw their arms up in horror. Maybe I have the wrong gay friends....

YourOtherLeft · 27/12/2016 11:22

Wolpertinger

"Hahahaha" "hahahaha". Hammond is a cowardly man.

Stewart Lee, though, is a genius. He's a great litmus test too, if you think you're not racist / misogynistic / homophobic but Stewart Lee makes you angry at him, then you probably are racist / misogynistic / homophobic.

Computer

I haven't watched this show, but I did used to be a fan of Top Gear before the background of little insults wore me down and I quit. I tried the new show for a couple of episodes, but gave up because it's contrived, over-scripted and the lack of editorial control from Amazon reveals more of the nastiness (like the comment in question).
