AIBU to not expect jehovah's witnesses on Christmas Eve!

This afternoon we had 2 jehovah's witnesses knock on our door and my DH answered and they began preaching about the fact that they were spreading the word that Jesus didn't exist. My DD who is 5 attends a church school so started preaching back to them that Jesus is the reason for Christmas. DD was giving quite a compelling argument. The couple looked quite keen to leave!
AIBU in not expecting this on Christmas Eve!

JW's aren't a cult

JW's are a cult, there you go fixed that for you

Cherrysoup · 24/12/2016 18:40

I thoroughly dislike religion being peddled round doorsteps as though it were some cheap commodity. It's hugely personal, I cannot take being preached at and I find them incredibly rude in that they try to step into my house up the single step. They get short shrift from me.

mamatiger2016 · 24/12/2016 18:51

This is one of the benefits of my rather large security gates at the end of my driveway, they don't even get to make it to the door!

We did have them try and sneak in once when we opened the gates to drive out claiming they thought there was a public footpath through our garden?!?

When I lived with my parents years ago they used to knock the door, my dad used to respond with "I give blood and I quite like Christmas too so thanks but no thanks"

Haven't ever had any Mormons though, although it would take all my strength not to start singing songs from the Book of Mormon to them if they ever rang the buzzer on the gate Xmas Confused

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 24/12/2016 19:02

Last time we had the JWs round was about 10 years ago

We were just on our way out to a christmas party.

They said they would come back but never did

We do have one of those no cold callers signs on our door though

calzone · 24/12/2016 19:06

I'm also pretty sure they didn't exactly say that either......

DonutParade · 24/12/2016 19:09

At least they'll be warm in their magical knickers.

I have JWs calling at my door which clearly says 'Vicarage.' The clerical collar is a bit of a give away that I am highly unlikely to convert. If I'm in a good mood I will engage them in theological debate on the basis it keeps them from bothering someone else and if they go back and ask their elders about partially realised eschatology then I've introduced someone to ideas outside their proscribed answers. If I'm in a bad mood (and they called on Christmas Day once) I give them the full evangelical works. Oddly enough my testimony about how much joy that Jesus and my Christian faith have brought into my life got me on the banned list for a number of years.

As far as I know the JWs are not really interested in converting people although if they do is a bonus. They have a works based theology so it is the number of door knocked on that is important. So preaching grace if they come my way seems fair to me.

Araminta99 · 24/12/2016 20:15

They're not a cult because it's not a new religion, and they don't have a human leader. They are Christians.

DefinitelyNotAJourno · 24/12/2016 20:15

Congratulations on having brainwashed your 5 year old

Heirhelp · 24/12/2016 20:20

The bible just says wise men. It does not specific how many wise men there were but only that they brought three gifts for baby Jesus.

Sybys · 24/12/2016 20:20

At least they'll be warm in their magical knickers.

I think you're thinking of Mormons.

OverScentedFanjo · 24/12/2016 20:36

I know several JW who are window cleaners, including mine. He doesn't know I know and is the loveliest man ever.

Twinkletowedelephant · 24/12/2016 20:41

D's 4 totally stumped them with i know all about God .....he wrote a book.

calzone · 24/12/2016 20:44

Greenheart.....check your facts as you are wrong too.

Gowgirl · 24/12/2016 20:47

I love the book of Mormon....completely missing the pointGrin

I know embarrassingly little about either but I would like some magic knickers please! Why don't these people open with that? I bet the success rate would increase dramatically!

What exactly is magical about the knickers?

JenLindleyShitMom · 24/12/2016 21:00

Would also like to know about magic knickers please! Are they like magic gloves that stretch to fit whatever size arse you put into them? Grin

JenLindleyShitMom · 24/12/2016 21:03

Or like those JML magic mats that soak up everything? Now that could be handy Blush

RoseGoldHippie · 24/12/2016 21:04

😂 Amazing!

thegoodnameshadgone · 24/12/2016 21:07

I think that a JW knocking on xmas eve or xmas day is not right. Prepared to be slagged off for this but I get it's not a day they celebrate, however interrupting people who do celebrate it for religious or other reasons isn't going to win anyone over is it?

GreatFuckability · 24/12/2016 21:15

Every JW that's ever knocked my door has asked jf they could give me a magazine, I say yes, they give it and leave. Yabu for engaging if you didn't want to talk to them.

limon · 24/12/2016 21:20

Jehovas witnesses do more of "the work" at christmas than the rest of the year because theybelieve Christmas is the work if the devil. I know because my exes family were witnesses. So yabu (but yanbu really because you weren't to know and they are ridiculous)

Armadillostoes · 24/12/2016 21:21

The posters attacking the OP for having 'brain-washed' her daughter and dismissing her comments as spouting rubbish are incredibly hypocritical, unless they refuse to answer any questions which their own children might ask about religion. All parents bring their children up in a way which reflects their own worldview. My parents were atheists and most certainly tried to encourage me to accept and embrace this perspective. To imply that all parents who bring their children up in a religious environment are doing something damaging or unacceptable is both arrogant and irrational.

However, I do think that the OP has every right to be unimpressed with people knocking on doors to try to foist their views on strangers. Bringing your children up in accordance with your own beliefs is what almost all parents do, inflicting your beliefs on random third parties is not.

witsender · 24/12/2016 21:30

JW isn't a cult. Hmm

I wasn't impressed when our daughter came home from school spouting about Jesus. Dh is an atheist Buddhist and I verge on Paganism. She now knows everyone believes different things. If a JW came to the door now (where we live it is unlikely) we would politely take the mag and leave it at that. One of her old school friends is a JW, we often see her mum on the street with the stands. Lovely, warm family.

Eh?? What are you on about?
