To ask what the hell is a Christmas Eve box?

Is this something people are doing? What is the point?

Our DCs get new pyjamas on Christmas eve and usually something to do before bed - a book to read etc. This year it's Mr Bean so we can introduce the kids to the Christmas episode Xmas Grin we will probably do a jigsaw after

BiscuitCapitalOfTheWorld · 23/12/2016 02:39

What fresh hell is this?

Redglitter · 23/12/2016 02:56

I'm clearly missing something. Now I love pj's. In fact I spend a huge amount of time wearing them but why on earth are they so essential on Christmas Eve. Why is everyone buying Christmas pj's Confused

toomanyeggs · 23/12/2016 03:22

I have done boxes on Christmas Eve for some years now, before that it was a little gift on Christmas Eve, usually pyjamas.

Since doing boxes, I use 2x $2 Christmas decorated gift boxes (same two each year, when they are not in use, they store Christmas decorations). This year I cannot put sleepwear in them, as one daughter is too hard to buy clothes for by myself (age/taste), and the other has sensory issues around clothing. So oldest has a mug, hot choc, candy cane and glow bracelets and younger has a book, candy cane, glow bracelets and a sensory toy (that isn't actually a sensory toy, but a cheap tiny bunny shaped nail brush, that she will use to brush on her skin)

My girls love them. It is our tradition, and has been for many years. It has nothing to do with $$, or being perceived as being spoilt, too special for Christmas or any other shit people have said here.

We don't have many traditions that centre around the four of us, as we spend a lot of Christmas at relatives (every sodding year) doing it everyone else's way, so this is for us all to enjoy together. We also don't do Elf on the Shelf, as my daughter struggles with having to maintain everyone's expectations (partly because she is 8, and partly because she is almost certainly autistic) so Elf to her would be way too real and make it too hard for her to accept that Father Christmas would visit because she cannot always maintain her behaviour.

differentnameforthis · 23/12/2016 03:32

I always factor in the cost of the box contents with what I am planning to spend on them at Christmas. I don't spend any more on the box, because it is all part of their presents.

Nobody I know buys actual Christmassy pjs, just regular ones that would be used all year. My DCs are getting mario and dinosaur ones this year as that's what they are really into, I wouldn't get specifically festive ones as that would (IMHO) be a waste - although I think they'd be happy to wear them all year TBH. But they are at the age of growing like weeds so need at least 1 new pair a year anyway. I did buy myself and DH some pj trousers as well one year, as we both needed them at the time, but they are still going strong a few years later so we only get the kids ones now rather than needlessly adding to our own wardrobes. We are like that in general anyway, don't do clothes shopping unless something is falling apart or outgrown.

I really like doing it though. It's the one thing that has really kept santa alive for my 9yo as she is convinced the elves brought her pjs and it can only have been magic (when actually that particular year DH did it by sneaking back into the house as the rest of us got in the car, so that when we got home in the evening the pjs were waiting for us on our stairs with a trail of glitter etc), therefore santa must be real. The one year we made any effort to do anything magical, frankly, and we're still living off it Xmas Grin.

New pjs was not something I grew up with (although I do know some people now who have always done it since childhood). I didn't have any family traditions really as my parents were about as festive as a cracked teapot, and I grew up hating it and resenting the fact that my friends loved their family festivities. I didn't really know what a good Christmas should be like, and both DH and I grew up with abuse etc so we were starting from scratch when we had our DCs. On a forum I used to frequent (before I discovered MN and never looked back of course Xmas Wink) I read the pjs idea and thought, oh that would be nice someday (I was pregnant with DC1 then and didn't do it until DC2 was a toddler). So it wasn't a true tradition for us. But it gave us a start and now several years later we have a lot of real, true-to-us traditions that have developed naturally over time. But the new pjs rule will always have a special place in my heart. Cheesy as that may be.

It's the buying tat for the sake of it element that I don't like. Pjs, they need anyway. If there was a book or whatever it would only be something that I would've bought anyway - e.g. a couple of years ago I got the Jolly Christmas Postman which I had read constantly as a child. The Mr Bean DVD is because this year the DCs have become obsessed with Johnny English, so I thought the Christmas episode would be a great place to start. I hate the idea of getting extra stuff in just to fill a box, it's meaningless and surely wasteful. I feel the same about stockings though. My name is Cag and I am a festive snob tat hater Xmas Blush Xmas Grin. I don't put sweets in either as my 2 would just get all overexcited about them. Xmas Hmm

Kind of want a Christmas flamingo now though. Xmas Envy As long as it's got a yoyo like in Fantasia 2000.

glitterazi · 23/12/2016 03:55

Christmas Eve box is another load of "I must spend" bollocks.
Gone is the day when Christmas is Christmas Day and the children get lots of lovely presents.
Now you're supposed to get Christmas Eve presents as well as just Christmas Day presents frankly isn't enough. Hmm
Now, get a wicker hamper and put a Xmassy dvd, reindeer food, snuggly PJ's, several books, bubble bath etc in....
Or how about just snuggling up together to watch The Snowman together with hot chocolate like it used to be?
Hate all this extra buying shit that goes on nowadays.
It's not all about the spending you know. Snowman and hot chocolate that's all you need Smile

glitterazi · 23/12/2016 03:57

Why is everyone buying Christmas pj's
Everyone isn't. Although social media would have you believe otherwise.

ShelaghTurner · 23/12/2016 04:09

That's a lovely tradition OvO

Mine get pjs and slippers. Just wrapped. No box. Then a Christmas film and hot choc or popcorn. They could have both if they wanted but haven't managed it yet, they'd be sick.

user1477282676 · 23/12/2016 04:11

We have a gift bag arrive from the elves...not that creepy elf on the shelf thing but random elves.

They leave a gift bag on the step.

Usually it has pjs, new mug, colouring book and pens....it's hardly breaking the bank. This year I've bloody forgotten the pyjamas though!

I can't get to the shops either.....I'm making up for the lack by putting in a box of chocolates each.

PerfumeAndCatsAndBooks · 23/12/2016 04:46

My DC have had a new pair of PJs on the morning of Xmas Eve since they were little (teens now so well over ten years!)

I always take a photo of the DC wearing them in the evening and it goes up on the wall. Nice when they were all little, bathed and smiling for the camera in matching PJs, not quite the same now they are refusing to stand next to each other with scowls and unbrushed hair, and muttering "oh my god mother can you not" Grin

This year I have added a sleep mask for one DD (who doesn't seem to leave her bed ever). The sleep mask says "Fuck Off" on it Grin

I love Christmas Xmas Wink Enjoy the happy smiling excited DC in new pyjamas while you can, I say! There's no need for an actual box though. PJs and a photo is sufficient Wink

tallulahturtle · 23/12/2016 07:06

Just popping out for flamingos and sausages.......

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 23/12/2016 07:11

I'm glad somebody warned about the glitter in the reindeer food. Worryingly this seems to be a new 'thing' lately

Reindeer food has been around for donkeys years

CuppaSarah · 23/12/2016 07:16

Can I just say the Christmas eve box is fab for a household like mine. Ds has his birthday on Christmas eve so it's the perfect way to go from celebrating his birthday to marking Christmas eve.

Helloitsme87 · 23/12/2016 07:34

I love xmas eve boxes. I love Christmas. Give me all the commercialised tat and make sure I have a phone in hand so I can take pictures and upload to Facebook. I'm being serious. It doesn't hurt anyone and I'm so excited to get it out on xmas eve with my kids

DeepanKrispanEven · 23/12/2016 07:36

I'm so glad we've never done this. What my children like on Christmas Eve is the family's traditional stuff, not a box of new things. It seems like just more pressure to spend more money.

pictish · 23/12/2016 07:36

Astro I agree. People seem very keen to make Christmas as expensive as they possibly can.

WHAT ELSE CAN WE BUY? MORE BUYING!!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/12/2016 07:39

Wouldn't do it, never have and never will. I'd not heard of it before this year and I think it's just another inserted pointless thing like the elf... but I don't care whether or why anybody else does it.

For me it just distracts and devalues but each to their own.

pictish · 23/12/2016 07:40

I mean Christmas bedding...I ask you. Christmas bedding!
Suckers.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/12/2016 07:41

Now surely that would be straw, pictish? The manger and all that?

SoupDragon · 23/12/2016 07:44

An engraved shot glass

A shot glass???

SVJAA · 23/12/2016 07:52

We've got one but it's a shoebox wrapped in wrapping paper.
It has:
Jammies and slippers each (kids)
DVDs
Popcorn, hot chocolate sachets and the stuff we leave out for Santa in it.
They get it after baths on Christmas Eve, we watch the DVDs and then they put the stuff out for Santa and go to bed. It's not a huge deal in our house, just a wee tradition and a wind down after all the madness in the run up to Christmas.

Lilaclily · 23/12/2016 07:55

a milk bottle for milk Xmas Grin

Reminds me of packets of peanuts this product may contain nuts

VeryPunny · 23/12/2016 07:56

Why does everything have to be a thing? Yes, I can understand a DVD to keep everyone out from under my feet but surely it's just "Hey kids, here's a DVD and a bowl of popcorn!"

And there's nothing wrong with kids in their normal pyjamas in pictures, Christmas or not. Or am I supposed to photoshop those too now?

Trixiebelle16 · 23/12/2016 07:57

Too scared to deep clean my vagina in case that creepy elf thing is down there!!

We do a Christmas Eve box. It's just our little tradition. This year dd has pyjamas, a Christmas story book, a Christmas dvd, a chocolate santa and a cute hot water bottle. We enjoy it and it's so much easier and nicer than moving the creepy elf around!
