Is this something people are doing? What is the point?

we have bought ours new pjs for Xmas eve because 'the year they all got scooters from granny' we took photos of them on them and realised they looked like a red cross appeal in half mast, washed out pj's

beyond that, they don't need MORE STUFF. THERE'S TOO MUCH STUFF AND TOO MUCH NEW FESTIVE SHIT

STOP TRYING TO MAKE FETCH HAPPEN...

BroomstickOfLove · 22/12/2016 23:06

We had Christmas Eve pyjamas as children, too, forty years ago.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 22/12/2016 23:07

Give it a couple of years and there'll be a boxing day box too

Well....

In Britain, it was a custom for tradespeople to collect "Christmas boxes" of money or presents on the first weekday after Christmas as thanks for good service throughout the year

"Boxing Day" on @Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_Day?wprov=sfta1

People also always mention hot chocolate like it us a magical elixir inky available on Xmas eve and not the other,364 days if the year

Indeed.

ragz134 · 22/12/2016 23:09

My mum used to do a 'present from the elves' on Christmas eve. Usually a board game to share, to keep us amused. I have done it a few times, tend to PJs instead now. Not a 'box' as such.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 22/12/2016 23:09

Astro 😀

KnittedBlanketHoles · 22/12/2016 23:12

No box but I've always done a Christmas Eve present and it's always been pyjamas, except this year it'll be skipped as she's got too many pyjamas.

PenguinsandPebbles · 22/12/2016 23:13

Well when I was small and my mum didn't have a pot to piss in, hot chocolate was a very rare treat, and one we only had at Christmas.

Bingowingslikeashieldofsteel · 22/12/2016 23:14

My kids (eldest is 20) have always had new PJs and some other sleep related pressie on Christmas Eve - they appear on the fireplace when Santa decides it's time to stfu and go to bed (they always end up being out of the room when they appear for some reason!). Some years it's requested by them at around 5pm ish and includes a DVD they can watch while they're settling down and letting us get on with stuff...

If only I'd thought to market it... I just assumed parents all did shit like that to get the buggers into bed on the most exciting night of the year?!

Jemimachristmaspuddingduck · 22/12/2016 23:15

I've just bought a very naice personalised box it's off not on the high street just incase any of my Facebook friends doubted our middle class status Xmas Grin

Seriously though it's just a bit of fun I don't intend to go mad with it just a nice tradition for us to have as a family on Christmas Eve

I'm definitely not doing one of those weird elves who the fuck has time for that shit?

Howaboutthisone · 22/12/2016 23:17

I don't think anyone's saying hot chocolate is a magical elixir! Mine don't usually have it so it's a nice treat is all.
If you want to do a box/pyjamas etc then do.
If you don't- don't do it! No ones insisting that you do! Deciding that those who do are slaves to consumerism is ridiculous!

clumsyduck · 22/12/2016 23:20

Well I first saw these boxes advertised on Facebook advertised at 40+ plus pound ! Thought was a nice idea though . So I do new pjs dc always get for Xmas anyway and then Around 6-7 pounds spent on chocolate hot chocolate a Christmas colouring pad / story book or activity to do on the evening and a packet of that reindeer dust wrapped in just a normal box ( such as that something else got delivered in ) wrapped in Xmas paper kids love it and pretty cheap really

MsJamieFraser · 22/12/2016 23:20

I'm mid 30's and always had a xmas even box, it was always ...

New PJ's
Video tape and then DVD of the lastest Xmas movie
Hot choc powder with candy canes squirts cream and marshmallows
Santas key
Rain deer dust
Bottle of beer
Carrot, home made cookies and milk for Santa and his reindeer

I've carried on this tradition, even tho I want at my parents house being in care.

SloanyAnne · 22/12/2016 23:21

Now that my DCs are too old for Santa and all that shizzle my Christmas Eve box could have a tap at one end Grin

squoosh · 22/12/2016 23:23

Christmas Eve box tradition is quite nice although is certainly new to me. But far preferable to that double crossing elf nonsense.

OpenMindedSceptic · 22/12/2016 23:24

We do it mainly because I am european and in my homeland we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve (and give presents that are brought by baby Jesus, rather than Santa Clause). So for me, it is a perfect way of keeping a little bit of tradition alive.
Although we don't do a customised all singing/dancing fancy box. It's just a brown cardboard box with some sparkly glitter on top (to cover up the amazon logo Xmas Grin ).

SalemSaberhagen · 22/12/2016 23:25

kieren my 2yo DD has toothpaste and a toothbrush in her stocking. She asked for them Grin

She would brush her teeth 20 times a day if I let her, the little weirdo

sweetkitty · 22/12/2016 23:25

Just new jammies here no box though

The Elf buggers off back to the North Pole tomorrow night and will leave them a little chocolate treat each though, I'm thinking the Elf might write and say he's not coming back next year!!

AmeliaPeabody · 22/12/2016 23:25

Commercialised tat for people who haven't managed to spend quite enough wonga so far this Xmas.

That's it exactly!

SausageSoda · 22/12/2016 23:27

I bought one for DD this year. She is 5 months old Grin yes, some people may think it's a load of shite and commercialised tat but it's in the privacy of my home and not harming anyone so, meh.

cbigs · 22/12/2016 23:28

The actual boxes can be extortionate though. But the idea is lovely. Mine get onesies ( no box though)

clumsyduck · 22/12/2016 23:28

Hmmm commercialised Tat - I do see your point but as I say for mine it really doesn't cost much and I just see it as a nice tradition really but I do like to drag Christmas out were possible spend enough time bloody planning it all !! Grin

I was thinking this year though with x mas eve boxes and elf on the shelf ( which I don't do) it really spreads you even thinner than usual financially and effort wise .... I really couldn't manage anything else to be honest...Blush

OohMavis · 22/12/2016 23:40

Mine just get new pyjamas and a mug of instant hot chocolate. New pyjamas so they look nice and not recently rescued from orphanages in the christmas morning photos.
