Dd told my dad and i that she wanted to work in Harrods when she grows up... she is 8!
My dad told her she shouldnt work in a shop. She also wants to be a model, pop star, vet... the usual.
My parents basically wanted us to be doctors and duscouraged anytjing else.
I rebelled and did teaching am now a TA.

Aibu to ask how much you want to influence your kids career decisions.

Also aibu to think there is nowt wrong with working in Harrods! Smile

craic sounds similar to my job! I'm currently in a desk job and it's very dull. Far removed from the exciting sexy view I think most have of the armed forces! I've never been in any remotely dangerous situations in 9 years, and neither have most of my colleagues. From your post I bet I work at the same place!

In spite of his being highly skilled and having a certain amount of talent, we have discouraged DS from making a career in music.
There's too mch competition and it's not well paid enough to dedicate your whole life to. Better to have it as a passion and a consolation.

He agrees with us, by the way and is set to study something more lucrative while continuing music in his spare time.

I worked in harrods in the fashion department for a year or so...then went on to do something else (journalism).

Working in Harrods is hell on earth.

The pay and bonus are very good for retail, but fuck me do you earn it. The department managers are the most horrific bullies, a lot of the customers are foul, either treating you like utter shit or sleazing on you horribly. You are expected to look like you've just stepped out of Vogue, and publicly humiliated if you don't. The amount of scandal behind the scenes is shocking.

Tell her if she wants to work in retail, work anywhere but Harrods.

I'd probably discourage mine, law, I enjoy the work but it's not well paid in my field and the workload is horrific. I'd also discourage military I think. Dh is a hospital consultant and I'd encourage that if they were interested, he works awful hours but is well paid and he absolutely loves his job. Id encourage anything like that that is an actual useful skill, medicine, nursing, trades because it opens doors and opportunities to travel and work. People with skills like will always be needed in a way that youtube vloggers wont.

I wouldn't want them to go into a service (Army, Navy etc) where their life is in danger. Pure NIMBYism I know but surely it's allowed when it's about your children.

I guess that if that's what they wanted then I'd support them but I certainly wouldn't encourage it.

I'm a nurse and no way would I encourage my son to go into nursing or my nieces for that matter. 6-7 years ago I would have said it was a great career with plenty of diversity. Not now - understaffed, underpaid and under appreciated by everyone.

DD would make a good lawyer unless she becomes a politician.
I am discouraging her from medicine because I am sure it would break her.

DS has long had his heart set on military & will enlist soon.

How much you want to influence your kids career decisions.

Not overly. I had enough of my own parents rejecting stuff about me.

pinki, RMP? Honestly, it sounds like he spends 70% of his time giving more senior people lifts, and the other 30% discussing child rearing* or interior decor with the middle-aged female civilian staff. I'm worried about when he leaves and might have to do actual work!

*we do not yet have children

just mentioned this thread to DH, he shrugged and said "stripper, prostitute, drug dealer" which is really what we should all be saying huh?

There are jobs I wouldn't be keen on but none I would actively discourage! Currently DD (8) wants to be a large animal vet or a cowgirl so we shall see!

Probably armed forces

They're heros and obvious they're all someone's children (and sibling/spouse/parent etc) but I would find it so hard to encourage my child to go into such a dangerous job. If they really wanted to of course I'd support them but I'd never encourage it if it didn't come from them

Retail and teaching are going to shed vast numbers of jobs and be totally transformed by technology. It's no good looking at those jobs today and thinking you'd like to do them in future because they won't be there in their current shape or form.

Anything to do with property. Estate agent, property manager etc, as you get a bad rep or abuse just for doing your job.

Civil enforcement officer - because I work with them and I know how much shit they get. In fact, anything parking/debt/enforcement related

Army - maybe it's selfish but I just couldn't bear it

Anything Kardashian-esque - call me old fashioned but I'd hate for my children to live their life in the public eye. Their father and I value privacy, which we teach the children, and I wouldn't want any of them to set their self-worth so low as to put a sex tape in the public sphere for the sake of money/attention.

I wouldn't discourage my son, but I hope he doesn't choose a high-stress career like medicine. I would like him to have a job he enjoys and not feel stressed and burned out by his job. In fact I would probably actively discourage anything in the NHS, I love the NHS but I've never had a job where I was made to feel as worthless or undervalued.

I'm a trained graphic designer and I wouldn't really encourage my DD into this area as a lot of the time you are expected to intern for a year for free to get into the field. And the jobs are very London centric and sadly still very male dominated.

Having said that, DD'S current ambition is to become a millionaire playing minecraft on YouTube. So that's that then Grin

I don't think I'd discourage them from any job.

DS is 17 and doing A Levels, doesn't want to go to Uni, so will be looking for a job. He's no idea what he wants to do. I don't think I'd be discouraging from anything, he's got to start somewhere and figure out what he wants to do.

Dd is studying medicine and both dh and I weren't exactly thrilled as we both work in NHS or associated fields. She's loving it so far though.

Actually, I thought about this overnight.

With artificial intelligence coming whether we want it or not, I wouldn't want a job where you can be replaced by a computer.

Not just blue collar work, accountancy and the legal profession are out too. I really believe lots of office type jobs are going to go.

I wouldn't want them to do anything that would bring them fame

^^this! But if they really wanted to I would support them.

I would probably discourage my children from getting into call centres selling charity stuff or doing surveys etc too, but only based on my own experience and how much I hated it! People are horrible to you in that profession
