To get annoyed with people who say the supermarkets are only closed for one day?

People keep moaning about how busy the supermarkets are and how people are buying as if the shops are closed for a month etc etc

Yes the supermarkets are busier because people DONT want to be going food shopping xmas eve/Boxing Day, next few days as maybe they want to relax, drink all day and so not drive, have lots of guests over that they want to spend time with!!
Plus the shops are busier because all the people that would normally do thier weekly shop on a Sunday/Monday are doing it earlier and those that would do it on a tue/wed are leaving it a day or so later so they can last over xmas.

Glad people are donating food to the food banks, wish there was somewhere local where I could donate but there isn't.

wasonthelist · 22/12/2016 15:28

Thinking about it - given the rise of online shopping shouldn't there be even fewer people clogging up the shops?

Jux · 22/12/2016 15:35

I once went Xmas food shopping with one of my aunts. We had more than 4 trolleys full. She was catering for 25 people for 3 weeks. The 4 trolleys had to be augmented after a couple of weeks. That was one of the best Xmases I've ever had; she, poor woman, does that every single year.

harderandharder2breathe · 22/12/2016 15:44

natsku try local churches, most either collect food or will direct you the central hub church for that locally. Also most supermarkets either have collections or will direct you to where to take it.

www.trusselltrust.org/get-help/find-a-foodbank/

Although our local one isn't listed.

HardcoreLadyType · 22/12/2016 15:59

natsku, (and others) if you use Ocado, you can donate to a food bank. Just type in "donate food" into the search, and it comes up with vouchers in various amounts.

In ye old days the shops were shut for a few days and I loved that feeling of getting supplies in and hunkering down.

BITCAT · 22/12/2016 17:14

I'm doing Xmas tea for 7 kids and 5 adults..still not bought that much. I'm baking a ton of stuff and freezing it all. Batch of mince pies, a cheesecake, and I'm doing jacket pots with variety of toppings plus side salad. I've got a stash of homemade cakes gateaux etc in the freezer so I don't have to panic. I have plenty of chocs etc. Tesco coming later that's me done. Until next weds or Thurs before I put in another order.

corythatwas · 22/12/2016 17:59

How does anyone know the woman with the 3 trolleys or whatever isn't feeding a large extended family? Christmas dinner at my parents' house typically involves 14 people, with another 8 or 9 dropping in for dinner on Boxing Day.

And then my parents live on any leftovers during January. Not a crumb is wasted

GreenGinger2 · 22/12/2016 18:01

Yanbu I like to hunker down away from the rest of humanity except for nearest and dearest for a good few days.Soooooo just gone through the pain today( big stock up),me all done until halfway through next week. Bliss.

The80sweregreat · 22/12/2016 18:23

The three trolley woman deserves a medal.
I hate the big trollies, they take on a mind of their own and are a bugger to push on a normal shop day. I normally get the wonky / dried up wheel one.

bonnieweelass · 22/12/2016 18:34

I used to work in Asda about 15 years ago as a student.

Xmas was CRAZY. queues at every til stretching up the aisle and yes, people with 2 trolleys. It was a nightmare putting all that food through, especially when you have such a large queue.

I agree, its only closed for one day, why not spread your shopping out? You'd think they were stocking nuclear bunkers or something.

So glad to be away from retail!

HerBluebiro · 22/12/2016 18:38

Ginger that is fantastic! Well done. So organised to do with vouchers too (and most of the stuff you get vouchers for has a long shelf life so perfect for foodbanks)

Thanks for the heads up about ocado and foodbanks. I will look out for the button next time I shop.

Zuki have you never had a birthday cake? Or a special meal? Those are over indulgences too. Not needed. When everyone is doing it, I it can seem a bit much to look at everyone. But there is a basic pleasure to be had in feasting. Especially in the cold and damp and dark. Turn up the fire. Light all the candles. Eat drink and be merry. And remember those less fortunate, now and throughout the year.

sorry wrong thread Xmas Blush

Someone said this to me today in the butchers.

Well here's the thing, mate. I have truck loads of people coming from 23rd to 28th. I want to cater for them all and I don't want to go out to the bloody shops again. So yes, actually I do need 50 sausages! Button it!

Natsku · 22/12/2016 20:06

Not in the UK so its a bit different here, the supermarkets don't have collections (they instead give their food that's about to go out of date to the charities) but asking the local church is a good idea, they would know.

Wheelsonthebus123 · 22/12/2016 20:17

The problem with shopping just after Christmas is the supermarkets have always run out of fresh essentials as they haven't had post christmas deliveries in yet. I had to go to three supermarkets last year to source full fat milk for the toddler.

OwlinaTree · 22/12/2016 20:22

I always used to forget to buy ciggies and had to nip to the pub on Xmas morning!

lalalalyra · 22/12/2016 20:28

I had three trolleys in Asda yesterday. Actually I had two not-very-enthusiastic teens 'helping' me so I'm now wondering if it was me!

With guests I have a household of 12 from Christmas Eve to January 3rd. They'll all need fed, watered and we'll go through a fair amount of loo roll! Christmas Day we have 23 for dinner. Boxing Day we have 17 for dinner. New Years Eve we're having a party so needed drinks and nibbles for around 28/29 and New Year's Day we've got 16 for dinner (although steak pies will be picked up between Christmas and New Year). So yeah I bought a lot of food, but it'll all be eaten.

The cashier said to me yesterday "Ooh you'd have been better buying a whole cow! when she was scanning the milk. I managed to smile politely, but it really wasn't that funny after an hour trying to manouvere around people dithering in the aisles. People shouldn't be allowed in the shop when it's rammed without a list imo. "Do you think we should get some...." is not a conversation to be having in the middle of an aisle a few days before christmas if you can't move your trolley to the side. (I hate shopping at the best of times and I actually cried when there was a glitch and I lost my delivery slot)

WhisperingLoudly · 22/12/2016 20:28

Surely it's less to do with the shops being closed for a day and more to do with the fact that people are catering for several multiples of the norm.

Jydel · 22/12/2016 20:41

Isn't that the whole point of being a supermarket and on the till Confused

ForalltheSaints · 22/12/2016 20:44

My annoyance is that it is only shut for one day a year. I supported the petition to close shops on Boxing Day, and would welcome a few more days a year with shops closed.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 22/12/2016 20:53

3 trollies Luna? Shock

I had to nip into Tesco for milk and bread before Christmas one year. It was like black Friday.

The signing of the petition was pretty poor compared to the number of people who want to shop on Boxing Day
