To disbelief this is something people buy? A waste of a good idea?

Amazon dash, personally yes I think it's a great idea. Essentially it's a push button that auto orders things for you so like toiletries, condoms, fairy liquid.

Now I think awesome that would be handy, but then I saw the price they are £5 each so to put that into perspective you would need one each for:

Toilet paper
Deodorant
Mouthwash
Toothpaste
Shaving cream
razor blades
Shower gel
Shampoo
Washing up liquid
Washing detergent
Dishwasher soap
Etc

That would be £55 plus the £80 prime membership you need to even order the items you need.

In a way it's a shame I could imagine this becoming a really useful product that could generate a lot of sales for Amazon with so many people having these buttons in their house but I can't see many people paying £5 per button

Would love it if Costco did the buttons as we tend to buy things like loo roll, coffee pods and dishwasher tablets from there. We have Amazon prime for next day delivery and their tv service but I'm not tempted at all by their dash.

ProfessorBranestawm · 21/12/2016 19:42

I'm not keen really. I can see why they'd be good if you have limited mobility etc but I don't like the idea of being committed to one brand/amount. I wouldn't have the storage space either.

I find the idea of sticking it on a door etc a bit odd, it's like extra advertising for the brands

YesThisIsMe · 21/12/2016 19:52

I personally wouldn't go for this because I'm mean price-conscious and the things which are most obvious for this service are exactly the things that I only ever buy on "special offer" i.e. not at the RRP which is targeted at people who are careless or desperate. Also I don't have the space for 45 loo rolls: Ocado just delivered 9 that I ordered having forgotten that they'd given me 18 for free last week and I can't find anywhere to store them.

But I can see that they'd be super useful in a small office with a decent sized supplies cupboard, for tea bags, coffee, toilet roll, printer paper, water bottles and coke cans etc. The additional cost of not shopping around would be offset by the fact that you're not paying an employee to spend serious amounts of time dealing with this stuff.

I read a post from a guy who got these, had a bunch of them around the house, really liked them. Then he had a party and his guests pressed them all. Luckily they couldn't order more than one thing at a time, but he still got a surpise stock-up on everything a few days later. :D

Costalot1 · 21/12/2016 20:11

I can't believe there's a nerf gun dash button 😂😂

e1y1 · 21/12/2016 20:15

They have had the Dash buttons for a couple of years in the US, but I don't know how well they are doing.

They do seem a good idea in theory, however, as mentioned

  • The quantities the products are sold in make the Dash button not that useful (one press would buy around 3 months worth of product).
  • The price paid is whatever the selling price is at the time of the press (so sometimes great value, sometimes not so much).
  • Can't shop around for different products, so unless you are brand loyal and wouldn't use anything else, they aren't that effective (I can only think of Coffee personally for me as something I never like to switch, don't know how many brand loyal people there are).
HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 21/12/2016 20:29

I love that they have a Play Doh dash button - how often do you think "I MUST buy more play doh before we run out". Would your kids press it every week?

allegretto · 21/12/2016 20:40

It is so easy to order directly from Amazon anyway so I don't see the point. Especially if you then have to confirm your order. Also really environmentally unfriendly!

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2016 21:19

As I say I think a button to press to add to a list on your smart phone would be great.

flummoxedlummox · 21/12/2016 21:30

I remember reading a review of these a few months ago. The stand out point for me was that the adhesive would fail, button falls off the wall/ceiling and then orders you whatever the massive amount of product it was specific to was. Grin

ClarkL · 22/12/2016 15:08

Stealth It's me. I get items delivered to the middle on no where. I dont feel any guilt because
1 Delivery companies plan their routes accordingly
2 I work from home and dont have a daily commute
3 ner, ner, ner ner, I have a dash button and I like it :p

BasinHaircut · 22/12/2016 15:36

I had never heard of this, just looked and there is also a thingy that you use to scan in products and it puts the items in your basket.

I'd like one of those, but for a supermarket rather than amazon TBH

heron98 · 22/12/2016 15:42

I used Amazon Pantry for the first time recently.

All that happened was I then had to find space to store a fuck ton of cleaning stuff.

I've decided not to bother again.

StealthPolarBear · 22/12/2016 16:47

Lol Clark :) I wasn't having a go at you as such just don't see how its viable. But yes I suppose I thought there wpuld be a specific amazon button delivery van but there won't be will there?

Wookiecookies · 22/12/2016 17:14

I like the concept of these, but in reality they are pretty useless for us, as we have stores own brand everything unless there is a super duper offer on, or am going to home bargains, I dont like being brand tied. So I think they are a bit of a con. I can see the benefit for an elderly person or someone with limited mobility though.

BrieAndChilli · 22/12/2016 17:19

The only thing I could think of that we buy branded and tend to buy in bulk are the tassimo coffee pods but it appears amazon don't do a button for those!
