To disbelief this is something people buy? A waste of a good idea?

Amazon dash, personally yes I think it's a great idea. Essentially it's a push button that auto orders things for you so like toiletries, condoms, fairy liquid.

Now I think awesome that would be handy, but then I saw the price they are £5 each so to put that into perspective you would need one each for:

Toilet paper
Deodorant
Mouthwash
Toothpaste
Shaving cream
razor blades
Shower gel
Shampoo
Washing up liquid
Washing detergent
Dishwasher soap
Etc

That would be £55 plus the £80 prime membership you need to even order the items you need.

In a way it's a shame I could imagine this becoming a really useful product that could generate a lot of sales for Amazon with so many people having these buttons in their house but I can't see many people paying £5 per button

What happens if your toddler finds the button and pushes it twenty times? You'd suddenly have 500 loo rolls arriving on your doorstep!

iklboodolphRedNoseReindeer · 21/12/2016 16:58

But isn't most of this stuff cheaper at places like Home Bargains etc? Might be handy if you can't get to shops or carry heavier stuff, I suppose.

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 21/12/2016 16:59

The shit thing about Amazon dash is that the push button sends you a huge amount of the product. It kind of defeats the purpose if you are happy to store 15kg of washing powder you aren't going to need to hit the button very often.

It's a shame as I could totally waste money on this geeky shit but I wish there was more variability in the volume of stuff that arrives.

Gallavich · 21/12/2016 16:59

I think it's a crazy gimmick that is unnecessarily complicating life. If you have prime then it's the work of a minute to whip your phone out and order the thing you need rather than push a silly button. But people will get this because they like to automatise everything.

EverySongbirdSays · 21/12/2016 17:00

The problem with it is that you then always get the same brand at the same price and can't take advantage of say, my local Discount Shop having a massive bottle of Fairy for a £1

These things are fine if you are brand loyal, but I'm only brand loyal for sanitary towels really.

lurkinghusband · 21/12/2016 17:00

It's a work in progress. (with the emphasis on progress).

Like a lot of things these days, if you don't get it, it probably wasn't meant for you.

LouisvilleLlama · 21/12/2016 17:03

Coffee it only registers one order at a time until the order comes and ill get a notification on my phone when he orders it so if he forgets that he's ordered it I can cancel the order

BrieAndChilli · 21/12/2016 17:05

I can see the attraction as someone said up thread for a work environment where consumable are used in larger quantities and means things get reordered as needed but not in a home environment

LouisvilleLlama · 21/12/2016 17:10

Look at the space of 30 messages " AIBU to think this is something someone would buy" I've now got it and defending its use. Look out for my new NN "mug"Blush

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 21/12/2016 17:25

I had to google what it was.

I'm probably being thick but here's what I understand it is -

You order one for say Ariel washing powder.

You press it when you are about to run out of Ariel washing powder

Amazon automatically send you tub of washing powder (is everything a fiver or is it just the button that's a fiver?) because you have pressed the button

Now forgive me if I am being thick but...wouldn't you just pop to the shop? Where you'd probably get it cheaper anyway?

ClarkL · 21/12/2016 17:26

I adore the Amazon dash, I was about to link to an article I wrote on it, then realised it would show who I am!!
Seriously though, you get £5 off your first order so it's essentially free.
My husband and kids are great at running out of items and only telling me when its all gone. With the button even they can manage to press it and it just arrives, really need one for milk and bread!

We have one next to the cat trays, for when we run out of litter, one next to the dishwasher so when the tablets run low they can press and one in the bathroom, again whoever helps themselves to the last loo roll now just presses the button.

If you have restricted mobility or only go out when you have support it allows you to easily order the larger bulkier items and get them delivered to your door so also helps with independent living.

You either love Amazon or you don't, I see them a bit like apple products, you either buy in totally to the joined up approach and it works seemlessly or don't as individually items are limited

RebootYourEngine · 21/12/2016 17:28

I wouldnt use this kind of thing because i buy more supermarkets own than branded and the branded i do buy i am not loyal to (will buy what is cheapest)

ClarkL · 21/12/2016 17:29

sorry just to jump in and add, we also live rurally - to run out of something means a 40 minute round trip. You need to be super organised to live in the middle on nowhere, and I'm not.

MycatsaPirate · 21/12/2016 17:39

I use the Amazon bulk buy option which automatically sends you stuff every month/two months etc.

Cat biscuits - 12kg every three months
Cat food - 184 sachets every month (we have four cats)
Toilet rolls - Andrex 48 rolls every two months (works out cheaper than Asda own make)

I then do a Pantry order every couple of months for washing powder, jars of curry sauce, coffee, cereal, squash. Then I just have to buy fresh stuff weekly which is a lot easier for me to manage physically and financially.

Plus we have a warehouse place near us that does stuff just going out of date or just out of date which is massively reduced. I have picked up cases of Heinz soup from there for £7 (14 tins) and we always get beans from there.

LouisvilleLlama · 21/12/2016 17:44

Cherry
Yes you could but I feel this is for people like my DF who is super forgetful and can say he's out, put it on the list go to the shops and still not get it. And this is a long cycle.

PenguinsandPebbles · 21/12/2016 17:54

I just love the fact they have one for condoms Xmas Grin

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2016 18:18

Surely it would make more sense if it added it to a shopping list. To whoever said they are in the middle of nowhere, so you have a guy driving a huge round trip to deliver 48 loo rolls and the a couple of days later the same round trip again for dishwasher tabs?

halcyondays · 21/12/2016 18:23

I can see how it might be useful for people living rurally or who can't get out easily, but isn't it just as easy to order from Amazon prime in the usual way? Using your computer or phone, not sure why a button is needed?

KittyCatty20 · 21/12/2016 18:36

I've been wondering when this would come up. I cannot see the point and it has caused arguments between myself and dh. He bought two dash buttons. One Sonicare toothbrush heads one and the other - a Durex one. Will never use sonicare one as it's only for adult brush heads and I usually order for dc at same time. And the Durex one... I just found it distasteful. I don't want to hear a post coital 'click' coming from the inside of the wardrobe (where he stuck it). Grim. I threw it away.

MsMims · 21/12/2016 18:36

How does it work with price fluctuations? For a while I used to buy washing powder off amazon but all of a sudden the price doubled and stayed high. Do you just commit to buying the product at whatever price it happens to be at when you order?

BarbaraofSeville · 21/12/2016 19:15

I suppose it is attractive to people who like gimmicks, certain brands and aren't bothered about getting the best price?

I would only bulk buy to save money. For the items listed I just get whatever is on offer.

PhoenixJasmine · 21/12/2016 19:27

I would have bought an Andrew one, if the pack sizes were smaller. I tend to get 9 rolls at a time. If I'm going to keep 45 at a time in I'm not going to need to reorder them frequently enough to warrant a button!

StealthPolarBear · 21/12/2016 19:31

" Using your computer or phone, not sure why a button is needed?"
Tbh I thought similar about smart phone and tablets, why do we need them for the Internet when we have a perfectly good desktop PC at home. I'm not sure these buttons are "it" but this is the way thinhs are going, I have no doubt.

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 21/12/2016 19:32

It's early doors on the Internet of Things, though. Soon, this will be automated better, and the logistics of delivery (not to mention costs) will be overcome and everything will just arrive. This is like the beta version. If I used the brands, and had the space to store, I'd use them.

CockacidalManiac · 21/12/2016 19:33

I'm a sucker for a gimmick and a gadget, but even I draw the line at these.
