To ask if you still 'tip' the postie, bin men, etc at Christmas?

I say 'still', because it is kind of an older generation thing to do. Having not done it before, I gave our postie a box of chocs last Christmas Eve as I work at home and have quite a lot of chats with him. My mum would leave whisky for the milkman, etc, and I think some people used to leave money in the dustbin lids for the bin men. Now wondering if I've started a new tradition and I should get him something this year too.

It's obviously not anything that anyone would get offended by, and no-one's going to say it's a bad idea. Just wondering how many people did it these days.

*Why not teachers lady"

It's your job, you get paid wages for it ergo you should not expect any more money for it.

Shona52 · 23/12/2016 17:34

WE don't but only because we don't have a regular person doing the job. We have about 6 different people that delivery the post. Same with the bin men with all the different lorries that come round never the same team. And we don't have a milkman but if it was the same person every day I would

TinselTwins · 23/12/2016 17:47

Yup, always, little box of bickies or chocs.

ilovechocolate07 · 23/12/2016 17:51

My mum used to but I never have. It's not that I don't appreciate them but I don't think I'll start tipping now as it may become expected. Also, I put £5 each in teacher collections and in reflection I appreciate my children's teachers more but couldn't really give less than £5.

Bohemond · 23/12/2016 17:59

Postie £20 - he looks after our dogs sometimes!
Bins £20 as they take loads of crap for us
Recycling £10
And DH tipped the parcel force man today as he is the most sensible of all our delivery people!

sodabreadjam · 23/12/2016 17:59

We don't have milk or papers delivered any more.

We don't tip the postman or binmen because I feel they are doing their job - no more no less. Postman went through a phase of delivering us mail for the people across the road. I think he was trying to dodge their letterbox as it has the stiffest bristles ever - which I discovered when I almost lost a couple of fingers trying to force their mail through.

DH did give the fish delivery man a bottle of wine. He will get us special orders and often gives us fish scraps for our cats.

Oldraver · 23/12/2016 18:04

didn't realise milkmen and paper boys still existed

The paper girl that delivers over the road turns up in driven in a Merc...Grin

The milkman only delivers twice a week at about 1am

Longislandicetee · 23/12/2016 18:06

Wayfarersonbaby yes you're right about income levels so the amounts I give reflects that. But i guess if you forget the amounts, for me the principle stands. My mum always did this when we didnt have much so I guess it's ingrained in me to show appreciation to others at Christmas. As an example, she bought a house last year and its the first time she's done that. She sent her very patient solicitor a card, wine and chocolates to say thank you when she completed.Grin

TheSlaughterOfHerodificado · 23/12/2016 18:08

Tip the paper boy - don't have a milkman or window cleaner (bastard kicked our 18 year old blind dog - I tore a strip off him and chucked himont of the garden.

Don't tip the bin man or the postman because the dustbinmen have about 14 teams of 3, and the postie is rarely the same lad/lass twice running.

Grittyshunts · 23/12/2016 18:32

I tip the milkman. Don't tip the postie as three of my Graze boxes disappeared Angry.

Gingerbreath · 23/12/2016 18:34

So no the Postman and the Refuse Collectors can fuck right off.
Grin
I agree, the few times I've actually seen the bin men, they've dropped rubbish and left it where it's lying and sometimes not emptied bins because the lid wasn't completely shut or it wasn't right next to the curbHmm

As a child I can remember the bin men coming round the back of the house if you'd forgotten to put the bin out, now they do the bare minimum and fuck all else.

Gingerbreath · 23/12/2016 18:35

I tip the milkman. Don't tip the postie as three of my Graze boxes disappeared

God he must have been desperateGrin

PrincessW11 · 23/12/2016 18:37

Yes, I tip postie milkman & binmen
I know the waste disposal crew and all others as they are regular; they also go the extra mile re deliveries collections etc

FantasticFestiveBeasts · 23/12/2016 18:37

Troys - it is really hard to get rid of junk mail and involves signing up in no fewer than three places (I know I did it recently). Not your postie's fault, they have to deliver it.

Keremy · 23/12/2016 18:38

I have tipped the bin men via a case of beer before when they have been very helpful. No idea if it is the same people weekly now though.

Our postie is forever leaving the post hanging out of our letterbox so that people can easily steal it (straight on a main road) so can sod off.

xJessica · 23/12/2016 18:42

We only gave the coal man a box of beer because he is brilliant, he always lets us just leave the money in the coal bunker for the next time he comes rather than paying up front and he's always really reliable and friendly.

biilbosmum · 23/12/2016 18:47

I 'tipped' my DPD driver (always the same bloke, brilliantly friendly and efficient) a bottle of wine and box of chocs. Likewise my bin/recycling man who always gives my bouncy dog a Bonio treat when he bounds up to him in the semi darkness on a wednesday morning. And I love him for it. For some reason I feel uneasy about tipping with cash. I don't tip my postie. Not sure why, but I think I reason that he has an ok pension, unlike my DPD driver, and round here a lot of posties are ex-services who are already drawing those pensions and earning a little extra from the PostOffice. Muddled thinking - but that's what I do!

Payitforward55 · 23/12/2016 18:47

Yes, I've left out a tin (tub) of sweets for the binmen on each of the bins this year. Doesn't cost much and spreads some happiness

ChBa · 23/12/2016 19:11

We tip the postman...he's always helpful and does us favours (like leaving parcels in a safe place even though they're not meant to) in fact we haven't been to collect a parcel on years!!

grumpygoat1 · 23/12/2016 19:17

I live in the middle of nowhere and our milk lady ALWAYS delivers the milk, if the roads are blocked (snow) and there are no other services she still delivers (gets a man with a tractor to take her) has never missed a day in 15yrs, so yes I give her a couple of bottles of wine.
Our regular postie goes out of his way to deliver parcels etc that others would just take back to the depot (15miles away) so he gets £20. The bin men get £20 given to the driver. I tip because I think the people concerned go out of their way to be helpful.

ChBa · 23/12/2016 19:19

my dh used to be a postman...he had to leave because we just couldn't live offor the wage. He was contracted 25hrs...as was every one else in his office and wasn't paid overtime. It was a pretty crap job at times. ..he was spat at, shot with an air rifle , jumped on by a gang of teens, bit several times by dogs , so when an old lady gave hI'm homemade fudge he was really pleased and it made the job a little bit better.

FantasticFestiveBeasts · 23/12/2016 19:23

That is nice to hear ChBa, well the fudge bit anyway.

My postie is the nicest man, goes out of his way to help. Chats to me every time I am in when he comes, asked about my dog's surgery and brought her some dog biscuits Xmas Grin when she was poorly. Just a lovely man ... who happens to be my postman.

summerholsdreamin · 23/12/2016 19:26

Postie yes. He always has a treat for our hound and a smile on his face

oldjacksscrote · 23/12/2016 19:26

OH is a postie, and he has a rural route so is often helping out the oldies by signing for their deliveries, even taking their post and sending it for them, or once putting run away sheep back in the field. He gets anything from a twix to £50 and it's very much appreciated and I think well deserved.

I always tip our postie as he will sign for my parcels, and is really patient with the kids, helps get the door for me n stuff, little things like that can really make a difference and I think people's kindness should be recognised.

Also in my 3 previous jobs as a sales assistant, bank cashier and administrator I always received chocolates, wine and biscuits at Christmas from some lovely customers and clients.

Payitforward55 · 23/12/2016 19:28

Feel a bit guilty now I haven't given the postman anything
