To ask if you still 'tip' the postie, bin men, etc at Christmas?

I say 'still', because it is kind of an older generation thing to do. Having not done it before, I gave our postie a box of chocs last Christmas Eve as I work at home and have quite a lot of chats with him. My mum would leave whisky for the milkman, etc, and I think some people used to leave money in the dustbin lids for the bin men. Now wondering if I've started a new tradition and I should get him something this year too.

It's obviously not anything that anyone would get offended by, and no-one's going to say it's a bad idea. Just wondering how many people did it these days.

I tip the postman £20. He saves me loads of trips to the sorting office during the year by leaving my parcels here and it is always the same lovely man unless he is on leave.

I don't tip the bin men. I like a mile down a track and have to take my rubbish to where the road starts, consequently I have never seen them!

KermitRuffinsTrumpet · 22/12/2016 19:45

I made the binnies some all butter shortbread.

We hardly have the same postie twice so I won't bother.

CitronellaEllaElla · 22/12/2016 19:47

Gave the postie a naice box of biscuits this year, she's lovely and helped me track down DD's missing school uniform (down the road stole the delivery) and gave me a big hug the morning when my cat was killed by a dog on the loose. She always waves when she sees me, she's the most lovely person Smile

I have a milk delivery and give him double amount Christmas week and I leave biscuits at the post office for my postie . Same ones every week

Janey50 · 22/12/2016 19:50

I can't tip our postman/woman as it seems to be a different one every couple of weeks. As for the binmen, forget it. They are bloody useless. About 25% of the time, they miss us out. The rest of the time, they don't take all the bags of rubbish, and any that are left on the floor next to the communal wheelie bins due to them being full to capacity (because they weren't emptied the previous week) are just left there. And if a bag of rubbish, splits, they just leave it scattered all over the floor. Tip them? You're having a laugh.

YorkiesGlasses · 22/12/2016 19:52

Postman usually gets £10 but twice in the past month people have delivered my post to me after it was posted through their doors - one parcel just got left on someone's windowsill two streets away! So no, not this year...

The binmen are loud and leave rubbish scattered everywhere, but on the other hand they do tend to turn a blind eye to minor 'infractions' so I always give them a tenner.

And I've never tipped my Christmas grocery delivery driver, but now I'm thinking I probably should...

FurryLittleTwerp · 22/12/2016 19:53

We have a selection of posties & I never see them, so don't treat them.

I did give the window-cleaner double pay "for Christmas" today - he was thrilled to bits & slightly embarrassed.

SabineUndine · 22/12/2016 19:56

No. A couple of years ago, on 27 December, I was sitting at home when the postman arrived. He stood outside the door for a bit and then rang the bell. When I opened the door, he gave me a card addressed 'Merry Christmas from your postman'. I was a bit clueless so I thanked him and shut the door.

It wasn't until later that I realised he was asking for a tip. Cheeky bugger. He was a Christmas relief worker whom I didn't know from a hole in the ground!

SherlockPotter · 22/12/2016 20:00

No? I've never tipped anyone ever...

iguanadonna · 22/12/2016 20:02

I used to tip the postman when we lived in the U.K. if I managed catch him. Just a fiver in a Christmas card. No milkman. Bin men were incredibly messy, rubbish all over street, so not them. Window cleaner was thieving arse bike-nicker, so not him either. Was usually different grocery drivers each time.

My mum always carefully tips everyone inc newspaper 'boy' - it used to be a boy; now these casual low paid jobs are done by impoverished adults. So even more reason to show a bit of care.

DanglyEarOrnaments · 22/12/2016 20:06

Yes tip the regular posite a tenner every year he is lovely.

ApocalypseNowt · 22/12/2016 20:07

Is it just me or are the posters saying "I don't tip.....why should you tip this person but not that person...." reminding anyone else of Mr Pink in Reservoir Dogs.... Grin

Robinkitty · 22/12/2016 20:08

I tipped my milkman, £5 in a card with thank you for your service. I appreciate the milk delivery and he's never let me down.

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 22/12/2016 20:20

We do. Twenty quid. She texts me if there's a parcel to see if I want her to sign for it for me. She signs it my dogs name! She is bloody brilliant at her job but is leaving next year to have a baby. She looks after everyone on her round, lambs ewes, keeps an eye on empty properties and will be sorely missed. Her replacement will be a lemon no doubt. They always have been when she has been on ML in the past sadly.

Warmworm · 22/12/2016 20:21

It's just an act of gratitude, if you can afford it. I gave the grocery delivery man a tip. I'll also try and catch the postie, who always tries to find a neighbour or safe place for my parcels.

GrumpyOldBag · 22/12/2016 20:22

I tip the postman, the Riverford delivery lady & my cleaner.

Not the bin men.

soundsystem · 22/12/2016 20:22

Naice box of biscuits for our post woman and the milkman. And the Royal Mail parcel guy (different person to the regular postie) - he's great and has saved me many trips to the sorting office.

The bin men are different each week so don't get them anything. Ditto the grocery delivery people. If we had a window cleaner or a paper boy I'd get them something as well.

1horatio · 22/12/2016 20:36

Ok, what does naice mean? I've been reading that all over mumsnet...
Nice... sure. But why naice?

Sorry for posting something unrelated, OP.

ForalltheSaints · 22/12/2016 20:40

I'd tip him or her if they could actually post the correct mail in the correct postbox. I am in a 'street' not the 'crescent' with the same name and only yesterday had a small parcel for someone in the 'crescent'. We have even been in contact because this is now the third time.

lilyb84 · 22/12/2016 20:55

Live in a flat so never see posties, bin men etc but would tip if I did and had any kind of relationship with them!

I always take a card and chocs in to our estate agents who manage our property, have always sent previous landlords a card. But our current estate agents are grumpy buggers so this year have cut down to just a card - dropped it in a few days ago and was greeted very frostily, then she took the card and said a very pointed "okay, thanks, goodbye" as she put it on top of a pile of paperwork and returned to what she was doing. So if we're still here next year I might not bother Grin

Back to the topic... if there was anyone I dealt with regularly I'd probably tip or give a small pressie.

glitterlips1 · 22/12/2016 20:58

No never. I have two post ladies during the week anyway. It is rare I have any interaction with either of them. I don't tip the bin men there are about 12 of them! I don't have a milkman.

5000candlesinthewind · 22/12/2016 20:58

I don't usually but I think I will tip the bin men this year. They always wave to my children and have even taken the bins out of the bin shed when I've forgotten.

How do you tip them though? And how much? There's at least 5 of them.

5000candlesinthewind · 22/12/2016 21:00

Naice is something that is really nice. Like the naice ham you can get from the deli part of a supermarket.

princessladylou · 22/12/2016 21:08

Our postman is awesome, goes out of his way when you've got a parcel due.

My little boy asked why he didn't have a cat in his van, the next time we had a parcel delivered he put a stuffed toy cat in the van window lol

1horatio · 22/12/2016 21:09

Huh...

Interesting. Thanks :)
