To think Lena Dunham needs to sssssh and go away? (She wishes she had had an abortion)

This woman, honestly. If it isn't enough she produced the most self indulgent show to ever grace televisions screens, in the form of Girls and is constantly picked out as some kind of agreed spokesperson for feminism now she has gone and been an offensive gravy filled arse clanger all over again.

On her recent podcast she has said she has never had an abortion but wished she had.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.yahoo.com/amphtml/celebrity/lena-dunham-i-still-havent-had-an-abortion-but-i-wish-i-had-195115943.html

Is this a case of not knowing how to get her point across (seemingly in everything she has ever done or said) or does she truly think the things she says are intelligent, observant or even vaguely decent for human conversation?

Actually I suppose I am being unreasonable for having any interest in anything this woman had to say but the rage has over taken me.

What was the thing with her sister ? Tried google but cant find anything.
I think she causes major issue for feminists and makes us look like men hating drama queens.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 20/12/2016 23:54

Dilligaf seriously? Literally Google 'Lena Dunham sister' and it's pages upon pages.

Dilligaf81 · 21/12/2016 00:00

Right just read up, thats a whole lot of fucked up there isnt there? How the hell would her sister or mother feel reading that.

Why are women like this the medias 'go to' person for womens issues ?

WetsTheFinger · 21/12/2016 00:20

I genuinely think she has a personality disorder. So narcissistic and self indulgent.

user1471545174 · 21/12/2016 00:25

I enjoy Girls for reasons I have never really thought about, but have always found her exhibitionism a bit off. I get similar errgghhh vibes from Caitlin Moran.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/12/2016 00:29

I agree with Giant

APlaceOnTheCouch · 21/12/2016 00:30

She needs to go away but I doubt she will. Whenever I think I couldn't dislike her any more, she manages to be even more of an arse.

WetsTheFinger · 21/12/2016 00:31

This article sums it up for me

BillSykesDog · 21/12/2016 00:32

Her sister seems to think it was fine. She made some very dubious remarks about accepting behaviour outside the 'heteronormative' which sounded worryingly like the sort of stuff PIE used to come out with in the seventies.

But sexual behaviour outside the 'heteronorm' still requires consent.

YouMeanYouForgotCranberriesToo · 21/12/2016 00:35

I can't stand her. Agree with pps who have said there is something wrong with her.

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 21/12/2016 00:41

Urgh. The sister thing is revolting. I googled her name + book + sister and got a perfectly explanatory Guardian article.

Oliversmumsarmy · 21/12/2016 00:42

I think what she was saying was she has never been pregnant.

But I suppose "I have not had an abortion" sounds more out there than I have never been pregnant.

Viviennemary · 21/12/2016 00:46

I've never heard of her. Thank goodness,.

EnidButton · 21/12/2016 00:46

I don't understand wtf she's trying to say. At all.

That she feels she'd be more pro choice if she had?? Confused No idea.

I can't think of many people to whom such a stupid comment wouldn't be either offensive or just baffling.

Ffs. Never got the attraction really but now I can actively say I dislike her.

CrazyGreyhoundLady · 21/12/2016 00:55

I think she was completely unreasonable to say this and I do not like her at all BUT I do think that in this instance, having read the link, she might have meant she wishes she had had one so she could understand what the women there were going through? From the context (her having just had to admit to a woman that she had never had one) that she was feeling guilty about not having 'been there' herself.

Saying that I think its a ridiculous attitude and potentially a very hurtful thing to say for anyone who has been or is going through it.

EnidButton · 21/12/2016 00:59

Hmm maybe Greyhound. Still a ridiculously thoughtless thing to say let alone think but you could be right that that's what she meant.

ICJump · 21/12/2016 01:03

What a turd. I tried listening to her podcast but couldn't get past her choice to have a man/woman friendship interview segment to explain female friendship.

Wishes she had an abortion yeah cause surgery is so fun! What a dick

dovesong · 21/12/2016 01:06

Ugh. She's such a dick.

It's so frustrating that one of the few celebs who talks a lot about female reproductive rights and feminism is such an idiot about it all.

MeetMeAtMidnight · 21/12/2016 01:08

Greyhound I think you are right but it's still incredibly messed up to think "oh I wish I'd had an abortion to better empathise with those who have." Where does it stop? I wish I'd been raped to better support rape victims or had a family member murdered to better understand families of murder victims. Just a horribly self-indulgent way of appropriating someone else's pain and making it about her.

GoTellTheBees · 21/12/2016 01:09

She is a disgusting twat who actually believes people are interested in any of her opinions.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 21/12/2016 01:15

The article I read explained that she felt saying 'I've not had an abortion' had an implicit judgement ie I'm not one of those women even though I support their right to have one. So she changed her response to 'I've not had an abortion but I wish I had'.
I still think it makes her sound immature and self-obsessed.

YorkiesGlasses · 21/12/2016 01:43

I wish I'd been raped to better support rape victims Actually, a female journalist wrote an article a few years ago about how trying to help an African rape victim left her feeling so traumatized that she decided the only way to get past it was to set up her own 'simulated' rape by a male friend where she knew everything that would happen in advance - never mind that all of her conditions and her control over the situation were exactly what rape victims don't have. We didn't use the term 'privilege' then, but it fits.

If it wasn't 1:30am and if I wasn't dog tired I might find this an interesting debate to have. Women's bodies, women's choices... If you are pro-choice and wouldn't judge a woman who had 8 abortions because of carelessness, would you judge a woman who got pregnant to have the experience of having an abortion, so that she felt better equipped to use her platform to campaign for abortion rights?

But then. she'd essentially be having an abortion just to save herself from a few words of explanation, like - 'I'm lucky that I have never needed to access abortion services but I am very grateful that they exist, and I fully support women who do access them for whatever reason.' And also unfortunately Lena suffers from such bad foot-in-mouth-itis that I don't think her having first-hand experience would change any opinions. Keep taking the pill Lena!

MeetMeAtMidnight · 21/12/2016 02:06

Yorkies The story of the rape victim wannabe journalist makes it twice in the space of a few minutes I've been left with my jaw working and no sound coming out.

Like you I think I need to call it a day on the Internet before I find myself doing that ridiculous fingers to temples and splaying them out "mind blown" thing.

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 21/12/2016 02:20

Yorkies I think that is an interesting question in a theoretical setting but it becomes mind boggling in the realities of real life. It's like exploring the misfortunes of others as a form of tourism, especially as she presumably makes money from her media presence.

Dunham strikes me as the type who will be at home right now, holding court salon style justifying in 101 completely not real ways, exactly just how wrong everyone else is. With everyone surrounding her nodding sagely and declaring her a genius. The ever rising group of people who say something shitty and when called out tell everyone they are regressive, right wing and ill educated. Heaven help us if she or her ilk ever end up in government.

(Am pro choice lefty)

And the rape story above is one of the most disgusting things I have had the misfortune to read.
