To be furious over 'ba ba spotty sheep'

As the title really! My DD started school nursery in September, and this past week, when she has been at home and singing nursery rhymes with us, she's been singing baa baa spotty sheep as opposed to black sheep.

We have always sang the 'black sheep' version as it's what myself and DP learned when we were little and as it is the 'proper' version. All the family sing the classic version also, as is traditional. So the only place that's singing this ridiculous version is school.

I just can't believe they're changing a kiddy nursery rhyme that's been around for god knows how long, as someone somewhere has deemed it inappropriate? I'd love to know why- as black sheep are an actual thing! Would it be the same if it was 'white sheep'? Probably not.

Just so annoyed, probably being irrational as I've had the implant out after 3 years and having my first visit from Mother Nature 🙈

AIBU to just want classic nursery rhymes to stay as the classic version??

At playgroup it'S still 'baa, baa, black sheep' but we sing it twice- once for the little boy down the road and once for the little girl.

So current it hurts.

neveradullmoment99 · 20/12/2016 20:17

Maybe whoever said it was. Along with not being allowed to use toilet rolls or egg boxes for craft. That is another story...

OopsDearyMe · 20/12/2016 20:24

Oh there was a rainbow sheep in one of our playgroups once if I remember it had nanny goats going to a fair too .
It was meant to be PC and involve all colours and creeds etc

Excellent. I've just got back 'ome and I am so relieved this thread is still here.

crazywriter · 20/12/2016 20:48

Not RTFT but my sister grew up with 'moo moo Jessie cow'

Not really worth getting furious over. Seems a little odd and silly but that's it. My DD sang 'baa baa black sheep' at her nursery last year.

Littlegreyauditor · 20/12/2016 21:03

Wow. This thread went weird quickly.

WetPaint4 · 20/12/2016 21:32

I'm black. I have laughed about discussed this with many black family members and friends over the year's and not one of us is bothered by the terms blackboard, or black bin bag, nor are we hurt by people wanting to sing Baa Baa Black Sheep (it's what I grew up with and its what I'll be teaching my kids). We have far bigger things to worry about. Makes me think that whoever decided these terms were offensive neglected to actually ask any black people what they thought.

BertrandRussell · 20/12/2016 21:42

How do you feel about gollywogs?

quencher · 20/12/2016 21:54

I agree wetpaint. I would love to meet one black Person who would complain. The only place it ever seems to appear is the internet. I once got asked at a dinner party if the word black was not allowed to be used around black people and why? The person was German and had been in England a few years.

Omg, the dreaded word just appeared. I was on countdown 54321 Bertrand just did it. Grin

Pugmomma · 20/12/2016 21:57

I think as long as the kids are happy to sing it, it shouldn't matter, I hear twinkle twinkle chocolate bar every night 😂

That advert is... bloody hell. It looks as if they're booting out one of the adorable little Nici sheep too...

That is fully reasonable, rational & correct Rage. Who are these idiots? Why are they spreading such foolishness to impressionable small humans? Only answer is for the right-minded to start bellowing "siege engine" over them. Or possibly rocking up to Rhyme Time with one. Or maybe both.

SalemSaberhagen · 20/12/2016 22:41

I would put good money on the OP not actually being black.

Flingmoo · 20/12/2016 22:58

MN is a funny place sometimes - if you're furious about baa baa black sheep that's ridiculous and pathetic but if you vehemently object to mispronouciations of words like bruschetta or marshmallow, that's absolutely normal Grin

BertrandRussell · 21/12/2016 07:53

"MN is a funny place sometimes - if you're furious about baa baa black sheep that's ridiculous and pathetic but if you vehemently object to mispronouciations of words like bruschetta or marshmallow, that's absolutely normal"

That'll be because one is an indication of closet racism and the other isn't.

FruitCider · 21/12/2016 08:21

I just wasted 5 minutes of my life reading this daily fail shit.

(Grabs child and screams baa baa pink sheep together).

scottishdiem · 21/12/2016 08:37

Well if people are going to get all het up about sticking with the orginal versions of things then this is what you should all be singing:

Bah, Bah, a black Sheep,
Have you any Wool?
Yes merry have I,
Three Bags full,
One for my Master,
One for my Dame,
One for the Little Boy
That lives down the lane.

Or possibly change the last line to

But none for the little boy who cries in the lane

But, shock and horror, things change. Wont someone please protect the children from things changing!!!!!

Daily Mail tastic thread this one.

sashh · 21/12/2016 08:57

Oh yeah I'm racist. Having received racism most of my life, I think I'll join in and pick my own backside?

Yes, you do that, because we all know only white people are ever racist.
