To be furious over 'ba ba spotty sheep'

As the title really! My DD started school nursery in September, and this past week, when she has been at home and singing nursery rhymes with us, she's been singing baa baa spotty sheep as opposed to black sheep.

We have always sang the 'black sheep' version as it's what myself and DP learned when we were little and as it is the 'proper' version. All the family sing the classic version also, as is traditional. So the only place that's singing this ridiculous version is school.

I just can't believe they're changing a kiddy nursery rhyme that's been around for god knows how long, as someone somewhere has deemed it inappropriate? I'd love to know why- as black sheep are an actual thing! Would it be the same if it was 'white sheep'? Probably not.

Just so annoyed, probably being irrational as I've had the implant out after 3 years and having my first visit from Mother Nature 🙈

AIBU to just want classic nursery rhymes to stay as the classic version??

Don't ever go to a Bob Dylan gig op he's always changing the songs. The bastard. You'd think they were his or something.

I have something better to do. I am going to the pub. Right now.

TaraCarter · 20/12/2016 17:07

That's not PC. I hear they prefer to be known as "donkeys" these days.

TaraCarter · 20/12/2016 17:09

now go fuck a dead duck till it quacks

Very picturesque. Is it an Americanism?

VioletRoar · 20/12/2016 17:09

Op I'm black.
I can safely say your precious rhyme hasn't been been changed to protect us "PC" black folk.

Sing whatever colour sheep you want, literally no one gives a shit. Just don't try to be offended that not being able to teach your toddler about a fictional black sheep is some kind of breach of your human rights. Literally ask any black person what they think of the nursery rhyme and see how little they care.

For the same reason, the second verse of the national anthem is very rarely sung.

PickAChew · 20/12/2016 17:10

Well, I'm quite glad that Little Baby Bum has Goosey Goosey Gander doing something kind with baby pandas, rather than throwing geriatric atheists down the stairs because DS2 uses that youtube channel an awful lot!

I think "furious" is a somewhat disproportionate reaction.

ghostyslovesheets · 20/12/2016 17:10

you seem very angry OP - would it help to talk about it?

ghostyslovesheets · 20/12/2016 17:14

did you wet the bed as a teenager?

PuppetInParadize · 20/12/2016 17:15

And doesn't the new version discriminate against people with spots?Grin

TaraCarter · 20/12/2016 17:15

Why, thank you! Do I need to pay royalties?

quencher · 20/12/2016 17:15

Amy Whinehouse's famous album is now called Back To Spotty.
Read that as Spotify.

Op, this pic is deserving of this thread.
You might be right, I don't cook Christmas dinner.

Everyone is furious, raging, horrified and enraged over the smallest things these days.

TaraCarter · 20/12/2016 17:18

You'll be threatening to roundhouse kick someone's nan in a minute, I think!

ghostyslovesheets · 20/12/2016 17:19

so much anger - teenage years are hard OP but maybe find another outlet rather than trolling on the internet?

Groovee · 20/12/2016 17:20

I work in nursery, we have blah blah black sheep as that is what the children ask for 😉. But there is white, rainbow, pink and spotty versions too!

I always thought they changed it to spotty sheep because black sheep has now been used as a sort of insult to make people who are a bit different feel bad. E.g. "They're the black sheep of X" and so they changed the one in the song to spotty sheep so people wouldn't associate one with the other.
