What would you consider a "high", "medium" and " low" salary for where you live?

DH has just been offered a new job- great! I think it's a good offer he doesn't seem as impressed. He is more driven than money by me though. Would be interested to know other people's perceptions of salaries.

What did you ask? How long is a piece of string....?

Location. Profession. Stage of career.

Low is minim wage. Medium probably £20-£25k and high would be £35k and above. That's just for the town I live in somewhere in the south. We have a lot of people who commute so their salary would be higher but still live in the same town

What profession OP? It's hard to answer without more information. What's high for a window cleaner would be low for a computer programmer etc.

High: £80k plus
Low: £28k and under,
for having a family in private rented or mortgaged, in London.

I live in SE and low would be below 22k, medium up until 50k and high above 50.
For me personally.

This is just where I feel the boundaries lie, for individual salaries:

Low - under 28k
Medium - 28k - 60k
High - over 60k

I live in the South East.

Southwest here: low is minimum wage,
Medium would be around 20-30k
High wage 60k and over.

I live in the South East.

I'd consider someone had a well paid job if they earn £80K +
I'd consider someone had an averagely paid job if they earn £40-£80K
I'd consider someone had a low paid job if they earn less than £40K

That doesn't relate to how good a salary is for a particular job, more reflecting the cost of living and the salary needed to be comfortable/managing/struggling. A family would most likely need 2 average salaries, or one high and one low to be comfortable, home owning, able to holiday abroad, run two cars etc in this area, unless they have significant assets in addition to their earnings.

In the immediate area I live I imagine I'm actually on a high salary (band 5 nurse £23,000ish, live in a very deprived area). In the wider scheme of things I'd say medium.

South east:

For main breadwinner, low would be £30k, medium, £60k and high £90k +

London - combined household income
Low: Under £60k
Medium: £120-150k
High: £200k +

I live in the South. To me low income would be less than £25k or maybe £30k medium probably up to £60k and high above that but I think you get normal high and very high so very high would be over £150k to me. I also think my answers are assuming people who have been in work a while so people in 30s or above

It's all relative. Out of my friends, who are professionals (mainly teaching and IT), I earn the least (£25k).

However, comparing to most of DPs friends, who work in retail, I earn the most.

I'm sure they would love to earn £25k, whereas for my friends that would be seen as a major pay cut.

It really depends on your OHs industry, his stage of career and where you are located.

80-100k is average here (comfortable)
Low minimum wage high god knows, I'm just happy to be comfortable after years struggling.

London (individual salaries)

I agree that it really depends.

For example, someone on £35k in Middlesbrough will have an income much higher than the average for the area. But you can't tell if it's a 'high' salary in absolute terms. It wouldn't be considered a high salary if you were a consultant anaesthetist wherever you lived (for example).

I said that ^ in the SE but should point out I'm in my late 20s and none of my friends have children, so that's for a single person or for two incomes if in a couple.

Depends on your background.

Most people we know have at least one FT professional in the house so normal salary is probably £40-60k and standard household income something like £50-80k.

Here you can get a 3-bed house in catchment and with a garden for £200k though, so although it's "normal" it's also very comfortable: when the boiler breaks you get it mended, when the car starts making noises you replace it, when the school shoes get tight you go to the shoe shop, and you throw stuff in the trolley without adding it up as you go along. People go on holiday (though varies from camping in Devon to cruising in the Maldives) and eat out.

There are too many variables really, location being the most obvious one.

I live in a very affluent area so here it would roughly be;

low - under 30k
medium - 30 - 100k
high - over 100k

Low - up to £16k
Middle - up to £25k
East Mids

Low-Min Wage.
Medium over 17k.
High over 28k.

Low - minimum wage
Medium - 18-25k (the bracket me and my friends are in)
High - 40k +

Im in yorkshire though, a lovely 3 bed semi with drive, garage and gardens would be about £175k. A first time house eg, 2 bed terrace with yard would be 80-90k
So its all relative.

Should have added North West. 3 bed house, with gardens start at 60k.

Coastal town NW England, low unemployment but lots of low paid seasonal/part time work.

Low - up to 18k
Medium - up to 25k
High - more than 25k

Last year when we had our mortgage renewed our financial advisor said some thing that made me realise how low local wages were. I earn about 27k a year but had always thought of myself as a middle earner (based on DH's much higher salary). He said that I earned 7k more than the local average and so round here, was well off.
