DH has just been offered a new job- great! I think it's a good offer he doesn't seem as impressed. He is more driven than money by me though. Would be interested to know other people's perceptions of salaries.

And never forget when doing the comparisons adding in tax credits and child benefit and housing benefit or universal credit so you compare like with like. Even thinkgs like one person earns £11,500 and his wife £11,500 means neither pays tax although both pay NI whereas if only the wife (or husband) works for £23k then they pay a lot more tax as only using one personal allowance (but then they would have childcare to pay for).

RebelandaStunner · 20/12/2016 11:41

Going on personal experience One full time wage-
Low 25k or less
Medium 30-50k
High over 75k

Midlands

FuckYouDailyMail · 20/12/2016 11:50

Nice attempt at a stealth boast OP about how much your DH earns.

titchy · 20/12/2016 11:52

Where has OP posted how much her dh earns?

Haudyerwheesht · 20/12/2016 11:59

We live in central Scotland
Low - below 30k
Medium - 30-60k
High - above 60k

MiladyThesaurus · 20/12/2016 11:59

The OP hasn't posted what her DH earns (or what his job is).

alltouchedout · 20/12/2016 12:01

Low is minimum wage (£14,976 on a 40 hour week, £11,232 on 30 hours) up to just under £16k.
Medium is circa £16- 24K.
High is £25+.
Once you're earning £30k and up round here, you're earning an awful lot more than most people.

KayTee87 · 20/12/2016 12:06

I'm in Scotland and would say for full time work..

Low; £12k-£20k
Medium; £20k-£35k
High; £35k +

syntheticharmony · 20/12/2016 12:21

Also in Cornwall where wages are lower than the national average.

Low: £12-£16k
Medium: £20-£35k
High: £40k +

We have a family income of just under £40k and live reasonably comfortably. However most of my friends earn just above NMW, between £14-£17k.

SnowyPaws · 20/12/2016 13:01

Thank you for the replies. I was interested in the perception of what people deem to be a high or low wage so this is interesting. Of course wages are relative to experience and the sector you work in but on the face value it's interesting to know what people would consider a high, medium or low salary.

DH had been offered £60k he thinks it's low. South east.

SnowyPaws · 20/12/2016 13:04

I think it's high FWIW. Interesting how people think differently about money.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 20/12/2016 13:07

For the southeast I wouldn't think that was a 'high' salary as such, maybe the upper end of average.

1horatio · 20/12/2016 13:08

Depends on the job, his experience etc...

happychristmasbum · 20/12/2016 13:11

South East but v.expensive area. A 3 bed semi costs around £500k

Low - anything under £30k

Medium - £30k - 80k

High - Above £80k

DanGleballs · 20/12/2016 13:20

South coast

Low minimum wage to 20k
Medium 21k to 40k
High above

House prices are about £250k for an average semi.

Wages have stagnanted or dropped in the last ten years. House prices are steadly rising.

More and more jobs are part time which clouds how much jobs are actually paying.

If you have kids and get top ups it is manageable, if you haven't life is bloody difficult.

DeliciouslyHella · 20/12/2016 13:21

South East, expensive area.

Low - sub £30k
Medium - £30k - £60k
High - £60k-£100k
Very high - £100k plus

I add the very high as this area is filled with city workers with ridiculously high salaries and the lifestyles to go with it. DH and I definitely don't fall into that category.

ZouBisou · 20/12/2016 13:24

Major European city outside UK:

Low: €18,000 - €30,000
Medium: €30,000 - €70,000
High: €70,000+

Gowgirl · 20/12/2016 13:24

On the south coast 60k is rich to many people, it really does depend on the industry, there are many people on minimum wage and top up benefits who are jam.

KayTee87 · 20/12/2016 13:24

DH had been offered £60k he thinks it's low. South east.

Op it really depends what he does though doesn't it?

EnormousTiger · 20/12/2016 13:40

I agree it depends what he does. My postman son is on about £22k full time. His lawyer sisters are on 3- 6x that and I earn more.

If your husband is a senior law firm partner with an Oxbridge first and 20 years of experience working in a profitable London firm £60k is not much - it is less than the newly qualified solicitors start on in the better firms in their 20s. Whereas no one at my son's postal sorting office will earn anywhere near £60k. It all comes back to exam results and life choices.

For women it is what you earn that counts not what someone who keeps you earns. Always earn your own money and ideally out earn your other half - it is fun.

PolarBearGoingSomewhere · 20/12/2016 13:49

We live in the East Midlands. Our core group of friends are all between 28-33. For me, I'd consider a salary to be low if it was c. £18k, medium up to £40k and anything over £45k would be doing very well for our age, stage of life and location.

Most of us have career type jobs where some progression is to be expected, so I imagine that in 15 years time I'll feel differently. It's all relative!

EagleIsland · 20/12/2016 13:50

Haven been back to the U.K. For a few years. But I used to set myself the target of earning my age. I would consider:

South West
Low: around £17k and under
Medium £20k -£45k
High: £45k -£65k
Very high: over £75

TeacupDrama · 20/12/2016 16:00

average London and southeast salary is around 35K; so 35K is not low even in London so many people in that area are earning and living on less
I accept that 35K is a struggle in London and would be really confortable in many parts of Scotland Northeast Wales etc
