And that even the most committed of meat eaters would be happy enough to cut out beef if they could eat moderate amounts of other meat?

Mushrooms in no way substitute beef and I love mushrooms.

I'm very happy with my local grass fed beef and won't be giving it up.

Pestilence13610 · 17/12/2016 21:29

I introduced DH to offal. He loves heart braised into submission and oxtail.
Also ferreted rabbit (no shot).

I am a bad vegetarian.

SoggyDays · 17/12/2016 21:32

Do you water your grass Scrowy?!

gamerchick · 17/12/2016 21:53

Mushrooms Confused that has to be one of the most depressing things I've read.

Scrowy · 17/12/2016 21:56

Soggy Er no, we are hill farmers in the UK, it tends to fall from the sky for free on an extremely regular basis Grin

SoggyDays · 17/12/2016 21:59

I guessed as much!

PuraVida · 17/12/2016 22:00

I'll give up beef when Leo gives up flying

vegmum21 · 17/12/2016 22:05

I think it's the amount of water used mainly in big scale farms in the usa etc and the water used to grow the crops to feed those animals. Grass fed small farms obviously don't use as much but they on their own won't sustain the amount of meat the world is eating at the current rate.
Watch cowspiracy.

vegmum21 · 17/12/2016 22:06

It explains how agriculture causes a lot more pollution than travel/planes etc.

annoyedbyidiotsparking · 17/12/2016 22:08

Mushrooms as steak GrinGrinGrin

sparechange · 17/12/2016 22:12

Please don't confuse US agricultural methods with U.K. ones!
Especially not organic and high welfare methods with US methods

These documentaries expose the appalling practices in the US but very few of the points raised are relevant to UK agriculture

Badcat666 · 17/12/2016 22:12

I think the issue is that a majority of the DOOOOOOM figures and articles around beef are to do with the farming methods of beef cattle in the Americas and NOT in the UK, or even European countries.

Gets right on my beef fillets it does.

God I've love a bit of steak now... rare... with perhaps dauphinoise potatoes, buttered cabbage... oh god and corn on the cob...

dribbles a bit

And also Leo can go swing one. Maybe I will listen to him if he travelled by cargo ships everywhere to ensure a neutral carbon footprint.

Also how much pollution has Mr Branston caused with his guzzling plane fleet?

Scrowy · 17/12/2016 22:13

Vegmum I suspect you are correct about where the figure comes from.

I think we need to be careful about assuming all beef production systems are the same.

It's like comparing a primark sweatshop with an independent dressmaker. Both produce the same end product but the methods of getting there and the quality and sustainability of the end product are vastly different.

IcedVanillaLatte · 17/12/2016 22:15

Can only assume Nutfree has been vegan so long she's forgotten (or never found out) what steak tastes and feels like… besides which, yes, mushrooms contain protein but one large mushroom has so little non-water mass that It can in no way compete with meat as the main component of a dish. Unless you ramp up the sides I'd be starving after a mushroom "steak".

I like that red juice dribbling down my chin and beef fat all over my lips Grin

Damn, I want a nice blue piece of rump with some chips or crusty bread to mop up the juices now. Ohhhh yeaaah.

AVirginLitTheCandle · 17/12/2016 22:19

mushrooms make good steak subs

How do you make a mushroom taste like a steak?

BeyondIBringYouGoodTidings · 17/12/2016 22:21

This thread is seriously making me crave steak!

SoggyDays · 17/12/2016 22:21

Badcat : true! Leo could recreate the studio filmstar era of crossing the oceans by ship. It would be so cool.

Badcat666 · 17/12/2016 22:21

How do you make a mushroom taste like a steak?

AVirgin You feed it to the beef cattle Grin

I'll get my coat........

annoyedbyidiotsparking · 17/12/2016 22:22

How would the UK function without fail safe spag bol?

SoggyDays · 17/12/2016 22:22

Definitely visiting the butcher this week. Rib roast is my favourite.

Heirhelp · 17/12/2016 22:22

I only eat meat once or twice a week. I would be very upset if I could never have beef again.

vegmum21 · 17/12/2016 22:23

Yes the figures are probably mainly from USA but the way the population in general is rising and the amount of meat, dairy and animal products we consume means it can't be sustained.
Over 1billion animals are killed in the uk alone every year. Your telling me that isn't producing a lot of waste products and using a lot of resources? I'm sure they can't all come from grass fed farms too.

PickAChew · 17/12/2016 22:24

Steak doesn't make me fart with anything even approximating the style (and substance!) of a plate full of mushrooms.

I love mushrooms, but OMG the wind!

And I'd take a tender, juicy sirloin or rib eye steak from here over mushrooms, any day!

BeyondIBringYouGoodTidings · 17/12/2016 22:24

It's my birthday this week - I've just put a request in with DH Xmas Grin

SoggyDays · 17/12/2016 22:29

I haven't read anyone saying that vegmum. I would just say don't take these internet links from OP as representative of UK and Ireland farming statistics.
