Poop and tele.

Apropos very little;

I feel irrationally irritated with people who say "poop" or "pooh" when they mean "poo".

Also, people who shorten "television" to "tele" (which sounds like "teleeh" in my head).

AIBU?

Of course I am. Anybody else have similar bugbears?

Ex-SIL used to (probably still does) shorten couldn't to 'cunt' when writing.

EllaHen · 17/12/2016 14:22

My family say clicker ShowMe. Dh has banned it. Grin.

I also grew up with 'jobby' but that was a bit uncouth for dh so have been saying poo since I met him. I'm glad of this thread because being a jobby-sayer growing up, poo and pooh always confused me. Now I know. Phew.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 17/12/2016 15:24

The remote is the tit. An old housemate's grandma used to call it that, so we did when we shared a house and it stuck.

amusedbush · 17/12/2016 16:22

I say poop, it's just a satisfying word to say. Onomatpoeic Grin

I do hate 'tele' though, I'd never come across that until MN and it just looks really affected 🙈 same with 'phone instead of just writing phone.

amusedbush · 17/12/2016 16:23

EllaHen

I had the opposite! I say 'poop' or 'poo' but DH says it's childish and I should say 'shite' or 'jobby' 😂

EllaHen · 17/12/2016 17:06

I love that he sees 'jobby' as grown up and mature Amused. Grin

steff13 · 17/12/2016 17:17

Poop is more common is the US than poo.

Don't get me started on "pressies," "stinge," "rellies," etc. Why all the cute "nicknames" for words? Pressies is the same number of syllables and letters and presents. Stinge is just silly.

EastMidsMummy · 17/12/2016 18:34

Excellent astute thread. Yes, the corrrect way to spell it is "telly". But, as has been pointed out, "vege" for "veggie" is worse. Veezjh?

Pistachiois50pmore · 17/12/2016 18:47

I'll see you tele-poop and raise you "yeh" for "yeah". Makes me furious whenever I see it

Manumission · 18/12/2016 16:29

Yeah, "yeh" makes no sense. Unless people are trying to conserve worn out "A" keys? Smile

Excellent astute thread

Why thank you East! Grin

I've got another one;

'Wait list' and 'Wait staff' Confused

WTF is wrong with 'waiting'?

Bugbear of mine is when people say "ay" at the end of sentences e.g. "It was good ay?"

But when the write it down it's written "it was good a".

Drives me up the bloody wall.

I also have a friend who writes "use" for "yous" as in "yous guys" aware that's still not right!!

IAmNotACat · 18/12/2016 16:37

'Poop' is definitely American. Nobody says 'poo' in America.

Manumission · 18/12/2016 16:51

Why Cat? Because poonis vulgar? Or because it just isn't a word in the States?

OP posts:
Manumission · 18/12/2016 16:51

^poo is vulgar

OP posts:
BalloonSlayer · 18/12/2016 17:11

Poop is a twee Americanism which to my British earholes sounds like something a four year old would say. Similarly, they use the word "stinky" instead of "smelly" to describe, say, a fart - a British person older than 5 wouldn't say stinky IMO.

Tele is what Margot Leadbetter would call the Television set if she was trying to be down with the kids.

Man10 · 18/12/2016 17:13

In a previous thread on this subject, it was established that "pooh" and "poo" are both legitimate spellings, but "pooh" is more correct has been around longer. One contributor had a dictionary in which only "pooh" was listed as a word.

KingscoteStaff · 18/12/2016 17:28

The telly is operated with the blipper.

But for some reason DC started calling the loo the lulu and it's stuck. There's my new year's resolution, right there.

IAmNotACat · 18/12/2016 19:11

Why Cat? Because poonis vulgar? Or because it just isn't a word in the States?

I think it's just not a word. It's not vulgar, they just all say 'poop'.

DOTLEYtheONEeyedDINO · 18/12/2016 19:26

The television is operated by the Nobber. Always has been, always will be. So is the DVD player, the Amazon Firestick, Xbox etc. Nobber = has (k)nobs.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 18/12/2016 19:29

Oh OP. Can we be friends?! Grin

NotStoppedAllDay · 18/12/2016 19:34

I also hate 'gah' and 'pahaha'

Mimicat44 · 18/12/2016 19:45

Poop is the American version
