to think that if you cycle up a road on the left hand side of cars, you can't blame the passenger if you get a door in your face

It looks like the cyclist was on the inside. No cycle lane but there is one coming up. The cars are queued. Passenger door is open. Cyclist is on the ground.

I cycle a lot. I don't go past cars on the inside. You are vulnerable. If you have to overtake queuing cars, do it on the outside. Then go to the cycle lane.

The person was the transport secretary.

Gingernaut

It was not tight at all.

(also notice the no stopping at any time sign)

Riderontheswarm · 16/12/2016 12:34

Passengers fault. Definitely. You can see how it could happen but if I opened my door without properly checking it was safe to do so and caused an accident I would be mortified and very apologetic. Blaming the cyclist would be bad form.

Lweji · 16/12/2016 12:34

amispartacus

The vehicle wasn't parked and it was not supposed to be.

amispartacus · 16/12/2016 12:35

If you were a cyclist trying to get past that queue of traffic, what would you have done?

He's on the correct side of the road, there isn't a cycle lane there.

You have to look back before opening a door.

rightsofwomen · 16/12/2016 12:36

hedge You should only filter if the cars are stationary. They were not.

Soubriquet · 16/12/2016 12:37

f you were a cyclist trying to get past that queue of traffic, what would you have done?

Exactly what he did.

P1nkP0ppy · 16/12/2016 12:37

Passenger 100% in the wrong.

Lweji · 16/12/2016 12:38

It's certainly not ideal that bikes filter through non stationary traffic. Having said that, and as a driver, I feel that we should protect the most vulnerable and always be on the lookout for cyclists. Particularly as that area looks like it has lots of them, and a cycle lane just ahead.

www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/105/made

Pretty conclusive?

JenLindleyShitMom · 16/12/2016 12:38

The car may have been in a line of traffic, but it was so close to the kerb, the passenger was able to step out onto it when he got out.

The cyclist fell onto the pavement after managing a tight manoeuvre between the car and a lamppost.

Think you've been watching a different video than me. He steps onto the road, he doesn't set foot on the pavement. And his back doesn't make it past the lamppost.

amispartacus · 16/12/2016 12:38

lweji

Do you think the cyclist is blameless?

OP posts:
JenLindleyShitMom · 16/12/2016 12:39

And his bike doesn't make it past the lamppost

amispartacus · 16/12/2016 12:39

Exactly what he did

And if the passenger door opened, would you bear no responsibility?

If you were a cyclist trying to get past that queue of traffic, what would you have done?
I would have cycled slowly on the inside, gone on the pavement (slowly giving pedestrians loads of space); or as a third option would have overtaken on the right, which in itself would have been lawful but no less safe because of the risk of injury from 2 instead of one rows of car drivers.

ChuckGravestones · 16/12/2016 12:40

totally the cyclists fault- he was speeding up the inside of the lane of traffic and should have been WATCHING FOR HAZARDS ahead

I think that is called cycling. cyclists can't exactly stop before every car, knock on the window and check that they aren't about to open the door in a non stopping zone whilst not parked and still driving.

Not quite sure where else the cyclist should have been. In the air perhaps?

Leave plenty of room when passing parked vehicles

The car wasn't parked though was it?

JenLindleyShitMom · 16/12/2016 12:41

You should only filter if the cars are stationary. They were not.

So either the passenger jumped out of a moving vehicle or the taxi stopped in the middle of moving traffic in a no stopping zone to let passenger out.

intheknickersoftime · 16/12/2016 12:42

It's Chris Grayling that took the cyclist out isn't it? Honest to god you couldn't make it up Grin

IAmNotAUserNumber · 16/12/2016 12:42

Whee the driver had stopped was not indicative that he was pulling up to park, to all intents and purposes he was waiting in traffic. The passenger had a responsibility to check his way was clear.

ivykaty44 · 16/12/2016 12:42

You wouldn't get anywhere in London driving a car if you didn't filter on the left of traffic, if it's illegal to pass on the left then it needs to be illegal for cars, lorry's and cyclist ,- but if cars and lorries are no longer able to pass other traffic on the left then London will grind to a halt

rightsofwomen · 16/12/2016 12:43

Jen I already posted the exact wording. Here it is again:

From Cycle Law

"Filtering on the left hand side should only be done when the traffic is completely stationary and the cyclist is confident that it will remain so until they are safely past the vehicle."

The cyclist was wrong.

Soubriquet · 16/12/2016 12:44

And if the passenger door opened, would you bear no responsibility

I would accept some responsibility such as maybe cycling too fast but no. I would blame the passenger for not looking before he opened the door.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 16/12/2016 12:44

I wouldn't cycle in central London...would be fearing for my life all the time. I do feel bad for cyclists - they're at the bottom of the pecking order when it comes to respect on the roads.

IAmNotAUserNumber · 16/12/2016 12:44

I don't understand what I just wrote above. The first sentence should read
There was no indication that the driver had stopped, he was not pulled up to the kerb, and appeared to be waiting to move in stationary traffic.

JenLindleyShitMom · 16/12/2016 12:45

righstofwomen do we know that he filtered whilst the traffic was moving?
