to think that if you cycle up a road on the left hand side of cars, you can't blame the passenger if you get a door in your face

It looks like the cyclist was on the inside. No cycle lane but there is one coming up. The cars are queued. Passenger door is open. Cyclist is on the ground.

I cycle a lot. I don't go past cars on the inside. You are vulnerable. If you have to overtake queuing cars, do it on the outside. Then go to the cycle lane.

These other YouTube videos of cyclists undertaking and the example of the bus are all explicitly talked about in the highway code. The highway code is explicit that you need to be careful not to open doors into people. Yet you think it is still more the cyclist at fault? You are victim blaming. Even if you think it is a risky manouevre for the cyclist that does not diminish or change who is at fault. Just as if I leave something on show in the car it is a risky move but that doesn't mean the thief is any less to blame for nicking it. (Even saying all that I still think you are way off base with your 'never undertake' attitude and that this situation was not inherently risky.)

Interesting that one of the videos the OP put up talks about how a red light jumping cyclist makes all cyclists look bad. I agree that it does seem to be the case buy why? I don't see a speeding car and think that reflects badly on all car drivers. We need a change in attitude towards cycling in this country.

I don't think you should. That video scares me. The cyclists are cycling past on the inside of big buses (which obstruct their view), the gap is narrow and there is railings on the inside. The cyclist who is filming is going at a reasonable speed. There's no room to manouvre and the bus could easily pull to the left and you'd be hit.

It's all very well saying it was not your fault but that doesn't help you when you've been hit.

When I am cycling, I take responsibility to try to keep myself safe. Personally, cycling like that on the inside of vehicles is not something I would do.

Isn't that where you are supposed to cycle ? Am I missing something? Surely on the other side of the car you are either going to be in the same position when driver stops and opens their door? Confused

The basic safety issue here is that cyclists are sharing road space with cars and HGV's. From that point dorward there is a safety issue.

The Dutch separate cycles from other vehicles all the time .. but unlike the UK, a cycle lane user doesn't give way to noncycle land users at all times. There are never any signs saying "cyclists dismount". Traffic turning left from a main road into a side road must give way to vehicles using the vehicle separation scheme (cycle part).

Cyclists never share road space with busses as busses travel faster allowing the bus to catch up the cyclist then try to overtake then make frequent stops forcing the cyclists to overtake or wait...

In short UK cycle facilities are poor quality and are the cause of accidents.

Anyone on the road should check whether it's safe to open the car door whether they are the passenger or the driver. If the car had pulled up to park elsewhere and the passenger had flung the door open and knocked over a pedestrian on the pavement, would, you still say that's right?

Overtaking queues of standing vehicles is near impossible if they are nose to tail and dodging in and out of traffic isn't a good idea either. Cyclist was in the right place.
