Please tell me who ruined my phone - me or my husband?

Please can you lovely people of mumsnet settle an argument that has been running on a for a week or so between my husband and I -
We were having lunch last week with bottles of coke each, we discussed carrying a few things home and I said I would put the bottles in my bag (so I had hands to carry other things). Unbeknown to me my husband had just 'rested' his lid on his bottle. At end of the meal I collect the two nearly full bottles and put them in my bag as discussed. To me at a glance the lid looked on. It then leaks, going all over my bag and ruining my iPhone (it can't be repaired - major upset).
Who broke my phone?!
Him for not screwing the lid on properly (i'd say why put it on at all if you aren't going to put it on properly?! He says he didn't want to lose lid hence why just put it on loosely) or me for not checking when I put it in my bag? I wouldn't check normally because I would always put a lid on properly or not at all! Plus when discussed putting drinks in my bag he didn't warn me about lid.
Go to town pls! We can't agree at all! Please provide a judgement so we can move forwards :-)

I don't know that it's either of your fault but I know if I were you I would definitely have checked the lid of the bottle. I'm very protective of my iPhone and keep my water bottles in a separate section of bag.

Patchouli666 · 15/12/2016 20:21

Call each other twats and move on. Life is far too short.

EverySongbirdSays · 15/12/2016 20:22

It's you.

Though it must be frustrating to know it's you.I'd concede this one, and stop trying to force him into accepting some percentage of blame. It won't change anything.

Simple rule learned by packing (shampoo in suitcase) is to double check stuff that could leak before sticking it in a tote bag where you might have not just gadgets but important paper like tickets.

It's usually a lesson learned in a once bitten twice shy way. If someone handed me their bottle I'd check it out of habit.

VoodooPeople · 15/12/2016 20:24

Well if I have to go for one or the other ...

Your fault.

I check all bottles that are going in my bag if they have been opened. I even turn them upside down to ensure there's no leakage.

alltouchedout · 15/12/2016 20:24

You should have checked but he also should have put the lid on properly or told you he hadn't bothered. He knew you were going to be taking the bottles so why on earth not close his before you picked it up?

WyfOfBathe · 15/12/2016 20:25

You. Your phone, your bag & you're the one who put it in there.

But you're both being unreasonable to carry on this argument.

GoofyTheHero · 15/12/2016 20:28

An accident. Move on.

"Call each other twats and move on."

Ignore all the other posts. You only need this one. Grin

Lorelei76 · 15/12/2016 20:30

Him
Who just puts the lid on that way and agrees when someone offers to take it?!

chocolateworshipper · 15/12/2016 20:31

Him

GoofyTheHero · 15/12/2016 20:33

Seriously, the phone is ruined whoever's fault it was. Blaming someone isn't going to miraculously make the phone work again. Life is too short to spend a week arguing about something like this.

LotsOfShoes · 15/12/2016 20:36

It was an accident. YABU for fighting over this for over a week. Apologize to each other and move on.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/12/2016 20:38

I love video on blame. "Damn you Steve" Grin

AndNowItsSeven · 15/12/2016 20:41

Him.

ThatsWhatYouDo · 15/12/2016 20:42

I would say him- that's tantamount to sabotage!

Bogeyface · 15/12/2016 20:45

HIm

Who rests a lid on a bottle? Either put it on properly or take it off, but just resting it is asking for trouble.

previously1474907171 · 15/12/2016 20:46

Him. You told him you would put them in your bag, he should have put the top on properly. Would he have put something leaky in his own bag or pocket?

ghostspirit · 15/12/2016 20:49

op put your phone in a bag of rice and leave it for a while. its very likey to start working again once all dried out. my dds iphone has been in the bath. and it still works after drying it out. i cant rember how long it had to be left couple f days at most i think

Bogeyface · 15/12/2016 20:51

If it was coke then it probably wont ghost as the sugar in the drink will affect it :( Thats why coffee without sugar wont knacker a laptop but with sugar it will.

MiddleClassProblem · 15/12/2016 20:53

Just an accident.

NiceFalafels · 15/12/2016 20:54

Your fault. You should have checked them as you put them into your bag

ghostspirit · 15/12/2016 20:54

Oh :(

S1lentAllTheseYears · 15/12/2016 20:54

Him.

My DH is known for taking the lid of the milk carton and resting it on top when waiting for the kettle to boil. All very well unless he wanders off aimlessly and then I come along and pick it up thinking it's screwed on and splash milk everywhere Angry

MyWineTime · 15/12/2016 20:55

There is absolutely no benefit to apportioning blame.
It was an accident that both of you had the opportunity to avoid but neither of you did - shit happens.
Stop arguing about it!

Meluzyna · 15/12/2016 20:57

You have my sympathy, OP, as my husband has form for precisely this - resting the lid on a bottle / jar of jam / pot of vinaigrette and then I pick it up expecting it to be "solid" and the whole thing splits in two and I get sauce / jam / wine all over everywhere. I'm starting to learn that I should naver assume it is safe to pick this sort of thing up without checking the lid is on properly. I feel for you, but if you put the bottle in your bag, then I'm afraid it is your fault.
