For selling for a profit?

I managed to get hold of one those really in demand toys for Xmas. I got it for a friend I knew was looking for one but she managed to get one the same time.

I looked at what they are selling for and I put it onto a local selling sight for what I paid +25.

I got really slammed for it on page which people saying I was taking advantage of desperate parents.

My first thought was to be irritated as I don't think anyone needs to be desperate for a toy - but then I had second thoughts and took it down.

Wibu to try and sell it on for a profit?

isadora u need a sense of humour transplant.
Seriously to get my post deleted for calling u a cow with my tongue pushed firmly in my cheek?
Sad

sj257 · 20/12/2016 17:42

Stick it on eBay. I did it one year with those zhu zhu hamster things that were that years must have toy but my children weren't old enough to be bothered with them. I think I got double what I paid for them and I was chuffed, money was tight and if people are daft enough to pay it then more fool them.

Isadora2007 · 20/12/2016 17:53

Earl. I don't even know how to "tag" your name here on MN. I certainly don't know how to report your post or get it deleted.
Maybe someone else just thought you were being a nasty cow and did me a favour?
Wasn't me... Halo

Earlgreywithmilk · 20/12/2016 18:21

Good, cos if u think that i honestly think the Nintendo I bought was yours you would have to be seriously wacko!!
Anyway just wanted to clear up I wasn't being serious...
Must be someone else who needs a sense of humour transplant..

Isadora2007 · 20/12/2016 18:25

Of course I knew it wasn't you as i had sold it a while ago.
But you did come across a bit of a bitch. Maybe it wasn't as obvious as you thought that you were "tongue in cheek"? I don't mind. Big girl pants on and all...

Earlgreywithmilk · 20/12/2016 18:32

Ok truce x

TheDevilMadeMeDoIt · 20/12/2016 18:49

The problems of capitalism and the free market.

Yes it would be lovely if the OP put it up for sale at cost and it was bought by the parents of a child who desperately wanted one.

Less lovely if someone else with an eye for a profit snapped it up - and promptly relisted it with 100% mark up?

Isadora2007 · 20/12/2016 20:03

Earl 👍🏻🎅🏻☕️☕️ (Mines a normal tea but yours is EG)

Mistoffeleze · 20/12/2016 20:24

Yes, I think you're being a bit of an arse. I wouldn't do it.

Why did you immediately list it as RRP + £25?

Likening you to a ticket tout was spot on.

If you had the cash, would you have bought 50 and sold them all on for a bigger profit?

anannoyinglylongusername · 20/12/2016 21:16

I saw on eBay and shpock they were going for over 130 so I thought +25 quite reasonable to be honest!

I do undersrand that this is a really popular present but I'm still not understanding the strong reactions of those opposed.

As others have said it is only a toy - not medication or a meal for someone desperate.

I don't think I would consider to buy them in bulk and sell on for a profit - I just happened to end up with one and saw an opportunity to top up my piggy bank with a few pounds - but even after lots of consideration I don't really see anything hugely offensive about it tbh..

Not really offensive, "a bit of an arse".

Ho hum. Each to their own. You aren't doing anything wrong as such, I just think you're a worse person for doing so.

People can be desperate for something (keep their children happy) without it being necessary for them to live (food or drugs).

Isadora2007 · 20/12/2016 23:44

"A worse person"? Really?

Well I don't think she is.

As she said she didn't buy with the sole purpose of selling at profit. But at this time of year why the hell not make a quid or two?

Mistoffeleze · 21/12/2016 12:16

Yes, a worse person than if she hadn't sold it on for profit to parents looking make their child happy at Christmas. I bought a Big Issue on the way to work so I'm a slightly better person than when I left the house this morning. I didn't offer DH a coffee this morning as I couldn't be bothered to walk back upstairs. That made me a slightly worse person... don't read into my comment too much.

sleepachu · 21/12/2016 12:53

You'd have to be v naive to think it's a good idea putting it on a FB selling site for RRP. People on Facebook selling sites are all completely insane and v unscrupulous. This is fact.

AndNowItsSeven · 21/12/2016 12:56

I think it's fine but I did sell a Boots advent calendar on eBay for £80. I ended up with an extra one by mistake though I didn't buy it to sell, same as yourself.

AndNowItsSeven · 21/12/2016 13:01

Aww just read you are selling at cost to Monkey Xmas Grin

asyesowsoshallyereap · 21/12/2016 13:02

I wonder if the people castigating the OP for thinking of selling at a market price dictated by demand will think the same when they come to sell their houses?

dingdongthewitchishere · 21/12/2016 14:35

I have just been shopping this morning, (main town near a big London airport), and there are loads of Hatchimals for sale. One of the toy shops has them on high shelves behind the till, they are not remotely hidden and that I didn't see any sign restricting the amount you could buy.

I was tempted to buy a few to sell for a ridiculous amount, but looking at the sold prices on ebay, they don't even go for that much over the retail price. It's such a non issue.

ProfessorBranestawm · 23/12/2016 02:57

I had a nosy at the completed listings on ebay - really not that much profit on most. Storm in a teacup.

I kind of agree with the spoilt kids thing. But at the same time, as parents we take them to see Santa, he asks what they would like, we encourage them to write lists, put our stocking out etc etc.

Not everyone does that though. My DCs are 9 and 7 have never been to see santa - they twigged young that the grotto santas weren't the real deal - and have never written a list (apart from once when they were encouraged to at school) or really even made particular requests TBH beyond mentioning the odd thing they like the look of. They are always thrilled with what they get and are total santa believers.

Yabu. Essentially exploiting those who have no other choice but to pay over the odds. You are no better than a ticket tout. Your behaviour to me is disgusting

It's called capitalism! It's what we all engage in, every singe day. Why is it disgusting just because its an awful but popular childrens toy?
