To be embarrassed by DH last night?

DH and I went to DD's music concert at school last night. At times, the music was overly loud and I was uncomfortable with it, but I was somewhat embarrassed to see DH blatantly sticking his fingers in his ears for the duration of the loud performances. Is it reasonable to find this rude or is he merely taking care of his own physical health regardless of how it looks? He is in his 60s and has tinnitus, if that makes any difference.

I always carry sets of earplugs in my bag.
Mainly for rock gigs but I've used them in various noisy situations, I was so glad of them at one wedding we attended, really loud disco (I dont understand why the music had to be so loud that nobody could chat)

He could have done it subtly, if it was really obvious then that's rude. If he made an effort to put finger in his ears but hold on to his face (like he was listening to microphones in ears) to make it less obvious, that's fine.

Often it's the body language/intention that says more than the actual action. People know the difference. It's like people know the difference between a real smile and a fake smile.

I would have sniggered if I had seen him

One event I went to earlier this year, had the absolute treat of two 8 year olds swarming out 'Let it go' from Frozen, on the Karaoke. Neither of them sang the verse, just nom om ummm their way through it, until the chorus where they both literally tried to out scream each other ' LET IT GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LET IT GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO'

It was completely unbearable, I put my fingers in my ears too! However one of the parents did see me and looked at me like I was cruella de ville. It was an adults birthday party and these two kids had taken over the karaoke and people started to go home. The parents thought it adorable..

Can't earplugs make tinnitus worse? I'd check on that carefully before getting some.

I would be more concerned about my DH's health and comfort given the situation rather than whether or not strangers thought he was rude.

A kids performance.... wouldn't you usually expect to be straining to hear the nervous voices over the comparative clang of the triangle? Ear plugs are not something that I would expect to need.
Tinnitus can be hell. there's no escaping it.
Yabu, but there are discrete ways of dealing with it though & being a bit more sensitive to how others may perceive it, maybe move to the back away from the source of the noise the next time he gets caught out without earplugs, so as it to appear as though he's blocking out the sheen din.

TheNaze73 · 15/12/2016 18:09

He's the unreasonable one for going to the concert with the condition without taking precautions

Longdistance · 15/12/2016 18:10

Tinnitus is shit. Yabu, I'd stick my fingers in with noise without it, I'm quite sensitive to loud noises.

My Dh is arse, as the nativity donkey tripped on a step, and he couldn't stop laughing. He was almost crying with laughter 🙄 Now, there's a first class twat.

I wish I'd had the guts to do it today. Kids working the sound desk does not end well. The feedback was awful and I was flinching the whole time. If I was further back I would have done but I waited outside with a couple of students who needed reuniting with classes and came back in to find myself front and centre . All the other parents helping supervise had gone "nope not sitting there" I think.

If it's discreet I don't see the harm, you do what you have to do.

JackShit · 15/12/2016 18:42

If he knew he had a problem he should have been better prepared.

Fingers in ears at a gig/performance is about as rude as it gets.
