To throw out three big bags of Mediterranean veg

user1481754448 · 15/12/2016 12:34

I ordered an Asda delivery and ordered three bags of stir fry veg with was annoyingly substituted for Mediterranean veg. They're three big bags of frozen Mediterranean veg. A 'mix of slices aubergine, peppers, courgette, onion and cherry tomatoes in a light oil'.

I hate Mediterranean veg. I love peppers on a pizza and onions so I might pick those out and use them but the courgette, aubergine and cherry tomatoes are a big no and that's why makes up the majority of it.

I hate wasting food and I'm poor so it's money down the drain but would I be unreasonable on this occasions to chuck them? Can't give them to a food bank as they're frozen not tinned.

how come you didnt hand them back when they told you about the substitution?

SealSong · 15/12/2016 12:37

Ask neighbours / friends if they want them

SaucyJack · 15/12/2016 12:37

Yes, you would.

Just give them to someone. I'll have it.

FriedPisces · 15/12/2016 12:38

Offer them to a friend/neighbour/relative?

typedwithcertainty · 15/12/2016 12:38

Gosh don't just throw them away?! Look at all these poor people in Aleppo?! Give them to a friend Smile

NannyR · 15/12/2016 12:40

Do you not have the option of sending them back with asda? We use ocado and they will let you know about substitutions and if they are not suitable they will take them back and refund you.

user1481754448 · 15/12/2016 12:43

Normally they do that. I was not at home so the delivery guy said he would have to leave them and there was a substitution so I just had to agree.

I'm not going to make a fuss about. None of my friends want them. I'm not going to start knocking on my neighbours as I don't really speak to them.

Maybe I can make mountains of tomato sauce and blend them into that.

It would be a good way to get to know neighbours? There must be an alternative to throwing them away. I'd also complain to Asda if you 'had' to accept it.

NatashaGurdin · 15/12/2016 12:55

Some food banks take frozen stuff, my local one does.

YelloDraw · 15/12/2016 12:58

Roast them for a long time. Blend. Yummy sauce.

superj · 15/12/2016 12:58

You can request a refund from asda inline. There'll be a field along the lines of rubbish substitution, so at least you'll get your money back...eventually, it takes a while. Doesn't solve what you're going to do with the bags though.
Asda substitutions can be terrible, once got a bag of salted peanuts instead of tahini!

SelfCleaningVagina · 15/12/2016 12:59

You would be U to chuck them away, yes. Could you complain to the supermarket that it was an inappropriate substitution and ask for your money back?

In the meantime you could roast them then throw in some tomato paste and chicken stock and maybe some lentils or split peas then whizz it all up into a nice soup. I bet you wouldn't even be able to tell which veg was in it. You might like it. Either way you e got nothing to lose.

Online...

There's an app I've seen recommended on here - Olio. You can flag up that you have open packets of food and people nearby who want it can arrange to pick it up!

Can you make a massive batch of sauce for pasta with the veg, chopped tomatoes or passata and herbs, then blend it down and freeze?

AnnPerkins · 15/12/2016 13:19

Tip them all in a saucepan with some garlic, put the lid on and cook on low for while. You'll end up with a really easy ratatouille. You won't really be able to identify individual vegetables, it will all just have one delicious flavour.

sizeofalentil · 15/12/2016 13:32

Roast them blitz them in a blender and make them in to soup or sauce. Or even curry.

CiderwithBuda · 15/12/2016 13:46

Soup!

KlingybunFistelvase · 15/12/2016 13:49

Another vote for soup and freeze! It's fine to refreeze veg once it's been cooked I think. Freeze it in portions and you can just whip one out for lunch / tea. Even if you aren't keen on the resulting soup, guests might be?

Christmasmice · 15/12/2016 14:04

Please don't chuck them. Roasted then blended up they'll make amazing soup.

Have you seen the website Love Food Hate Waste? I think there's recipe ideas on there. The world throws away about 1/3 of all food produced. Shock

purplefizz26 · 15/12/2016 14:08

Go online into your account and request a refund for an unsuitable substitution. Very easy and the money goes back in to the account within days.
I do this when they send food with shit use by dates or damaged stuff etc that I hadn't noticed when delivering.

1horatio · 15/12/2016 14:18

Do food banks take frozen stuff?

YelloDraw · 15/12/2016 14:20

Asda substitutions can be terrible, once got a bag of salted peanuts instead of tahini!
I think that is quite a good sub! Wrong nut but basically the same idea if you blend them up.

Freesialala · 15/12/2016 14:28

Your local hostel or night shelter woul probably be quite appreciative amd make good use of it.
