To think you should be able to class shopping as a hobby

According to my mother, shopping/ having an interest in fashion and beauty is not a hobby

But I would say it is
Because it's what I enjoy doing

I'm with your mother. Buying things isn't a hobby.

LardLizard · 14/12/2016 19:35

It's not just buying things though is i

It's having an eye for colour and style and shape
And an interest in it

It is what I enjoy doing so therefore it's how I enjoy spending free time
There a hobby

An interest but not a hobby.

TheNaze73 · 14/12/2016 19:36

Not a hobby

MargeryFenworthy · 14/12/2016 19:36

It is for me. I have a weakness for bags, clothes and sparkly things! I do have other interests though and a hectic career so there is more to me than shopping ;-)

HaveNoSocks · 14/12/2016 19:37

I think to class to be as a hobby you'd have to be doing something less passive than just buying stuff. e.g. designing your own clothes or something.

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 14/12/2016 19:38

Your mother has a lot of opinions today.

JenLindleyShitMom · 14/12/2016 19:38

Of course it is a hobby! Why on earth wouldn't it be? It's something people do regularly for pleasure. Some people collect antiques, others collect clothes or shoes or bags or soft furnishings. I can't stand shopping but I can see it is a hobby.

BackforGood · 14/12/2016 19:39

YABU - it's not a hobby. You might like / enjoy it, but it's a not a hobby.
I like my job - that's not a hobby either. Liking something doesn't make it a hobby.

JenLindleyShitMom · 14/12/2016 19:42

What makes something a hobby then?

LardLizard · 14/12/2016 19:44

Yes Justin she's on her soapbox today alright

Hobby

Sounds like it fits the bill to me.

BingBongBam · 14/12/2016 19:47

If shopping is considered a hobby then that suggests to me that the person is quite shallow, hobbies are arts, sports, things like that.

Rrross1ges · 14/12/2016 19:49

It's not a hobby, it's a vacation.

Topseyt · 14/12/2016 19:53

Some might consider it a hobby. At the other end of that spectrum though are others for whom it is something of an addiction.

I quite enjoy it once in a while, but I am not a big spender usually, and don't like it enough to call it a hobby.

user1477282676 · 14/12/2016 19:55

The design side of it is a hobby....for example you might say your hobbies are fashion and interior design but the shopping part, that's not a hobby.

I for instance like sewing things...I don't include the shopping for the fabrics as part of the hobby.

JenLindleyShitMom · 14/12/2016 20:00

that suggests to me that the person is quite shallow

Hmm it doesn't suggest that at all, that's just what you choose to think of them. What is it about enjoying shopping that makes some shallow in your opinion?

JenLindleyShitMom · 14/12/2016 20:01

At the other end of that spectrum though are others for whom it is something of an addiction.

As with any hobby.

Foldedtshirt · 14/12/2016 20:03

It's a weakness not a hobby.

HopeClearwater · 14/12/2016 20:05

'Hobby' covers just about anything on this site though.

Bluntness100 · 14/12/2016 20:06

Two seperate things, one is fashion and beauty. The other is shopping. Both can be linked,

If you are saying you just like going out and spending money on yourself on clothes and make up , and that's your hobby, then fair play to you. Call it whatever makes you happy. You don't need to justify it or label it, unless it's causing you financial issues. There is no reason spending money on yourself can't be your hobby.

OnTheUp13 · 14/12/2016 20:09

I'm with you OP. Its a hobby for me. So much so that friends ask me to go with them clothes shopping and do their hair and make up for special events. Far from my actual job but I got such a buzz out of making people feel fab.

ilovesooty · 14/12/2016 20:09

I don't see it as a hobby in itself. I think in some cases it's an addiction or a displacement activity if your life lacks purpose or a sense of worth.

MrsMattBomer · 14/12/2016 20:16

It's not a hobby. A hobby for me is something you do purely for pleasure and involves some type of activity. Walking round and buying things is not a hobby. Making clothes, or knitting or make up can be a hobby, but not just generic shopping.

Personally, I loathe shopping and avoid it at all costs because it annoys me so much. I don't know how anyone can derive pleasure from it (and even if I had all the money in the world it would stress me up!).

TheSpottedZebra · 14/12/2016 20:18

Can I proffer the opinion that 'women's interests' are often belittled and rubbished, whereas those of men are deemed important.

22 well paid men running round after a ball = worthy of the national news
Other (mostly) men watching the above = valid hobby
