...to eat out of date mince lamb?

Eddie900 · 13/12/2016 10:50

Mince lamb- use by date yesterday.
It's been stored in fridge.
Would you cook and use it today?
Only adults eating it (no one with health problems/ no one elderly etc).
Would you throw it out or risk it?

1 day it will be perfectly fine.

Rule of thumb is, if it smells and looks OK, then it will be fine.

Manumission · 13/12/2016 10:51

I was about to yell at you to. In it. But if it's only 11 hours "out of date" smells and looks okay, I'd use it.

Have a really good sniff.

As long as it's not grey looking and the packet isn't sucked in it should be fine.

ryderandthepups · 13/12/2016 10:54

I would.

lightcola · 13/12/2016 10:54

Even if it's grey looking it's ok. That just means the blood has run out of it.

loobyloo1234 · 13/12/2016 11:02

I'd say its fine aswell ... you can usually tell from the smell and colour OP

Eddie900 · 13/12/2016 11:27

Great. Glad everyone agrees it's ok to use. Yes- it's pink. Looks fine. Not opened yet but I will give it a whiff.

My plan was to make a stew in slow cooker. Some will be eaten today. The rest will be frozen and eaten in next few weeks. Is that ok or does it all need to be eaten today given that it's past its best?

Thanks everyone!

I really wouldn't eat meat past its use by date.

AgentProvocateur · 13/12/2016 11:35

If it smells ok it will be fine. And it's fine to freeze once you've cooked it too.

pklme · 13/12/2016 11:43

IT will be ok to freeze, too.
I did minced beef one day past, yesterday. No problem.

FunkinEll · 13/12/2016 11:44

Yes, I would definitely use 1 day last lamb or beef.

PeachBellini123 · 13/12/2016 11:47

Yep would eat it no problem as long as you stick it in the freezer after cooking straight away (don't leave it hanging around in the fridge for a couple of days).

As my home economics teacher used to say food doesn't have a little timer on it that goes off as soon as the use-by date is passed. Trust your instincts.

Crankycunt · 13/12/2016 11:49

Its fine. As long as you cook it properly and cool/freeze it properly it will be fine.

TrippyMcTrapFace · 13/12/2016 11:50

I quite often use meat that's one day past date, although I wouldn't use it any later than that.
As for freezing, yes I do that too but make sure I freeze same day it's cooked and eat the day it's defrosted. Don't leave it hanging around after it's come out of the freezer.

TheMasterMurderedMargarita · 13/12/2016 11:51

If it smells ok it'll be fine.
Cook the hell out of it, freeze the bit you want to store asap.

TrippyMcTrapFace · 13/12/2016 11:51

x posted with Bellini, apologies. MN loads so slowly for me especially when refreshing the page.

80sWaistcoat · 13/12/2016 12:00

Wolfiefan I think a certain amount of judgement has to be used - things don't just go instantly poisonous over night. If stored correctly, kept cool on way back from shop etc and put straight in fridge it should be fine.

Lugged around town for a couple of hours on a hot summers day or left in a car boot in the sun - maybe not.

I'd cook it - eat half and freeze half.

Wolfiefan · 13/12/2016 12:06

The trouble is you don't know how well it was stored before you bought it. And you can't necessarily smell everything that could make you ill. You can obviously smell if it's rancid but that's no help.

Notso · 13/12/2016 12:15

I buy most meat from the butcher, it just comes in a bag. No use by date. I have to rely on the smell and look of it.

ShotsFired · 13/12/2016 12:25

Yeah def eat it. If it's bad enough to kill you, you'll know about it. If not, your gut bugs will get stuck in anyway (this may not be an actual science based fact)

I've been known to look at some very slightly out of date stuff and either cook it; or buying in the freezer for another day.

I'm still ali-

quirkychicken · 13/12/2016 12:29

if there's no rank smell, you can eat it. noses are better than use-by dates!

Gottagetmoving · 13/12/2016 12:50

If it smells ok it will be fine.
My DP would eat it a week out of date or longer if it looked ok

Eddie900 · 13/12/2016 16:17

Thanks everyone.
Most of the stew will be eaten on Friday. Should I freeze it until then or just leave it in the fridge?

Wolfiefan · 13/12/2016 16:19

I really wouldn't cook out of date meat then leave it for three days in the fridge before eating.
