AIBU teachers don't like nicknames?

AIBU at school, they insist on calling children by their full names. My primary aged children-Tobias, Noah, Willow, Feodora, Cecilia, Skyla, Xander- Like to be called by their nn (Toby, Ceci, Feo, Skye, Xander) however the school has decided to make all the teachers call them by the real names. I see this as a truly pointless rule as when my children have politely asked them to call them by their nn the have replied, Sorry we have to call you by your full name. I really don't understand this, i arranged a meeting with one of the deputy heads but they refused to see me (i've never caused any problems, I'm the drop and pick up only type of parent) I don't see why they are just making the children uncomfortable!
AIBU????

Lots of people are going to call them by their names - it's their name!!!! Nice if teachers used short versions but kids cant really expect it.

aquabluepool · 12/12/2016 22:07

They should be calling them by their preferred name.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/12/2016 22:07

How is Xander a nickname for Xander? And what do Noah and Willow like to be called?

aquabluepool · 12/12/2016 22:07

But, you have a LOT of children!

likepeasandcarrots · 12/12/2016 22:10

It always puzzles me when people give their kids a name but then call them something different? If you are going to call them by a different variation why not just name them that in the first place?

ReadySteadyNo · 12/12/2016 22:11

Bit identifying OP?

aquabluepool · 12/12/2016 22:12

Peas, maybe, but it's a bit rubbish for the kid if the teacher refuses to call them what is their name (to them.)

EdmundCleverClogs · 12/12/2016 22:13

This is the third thread you have listing your children's names, I'd be a bit worried about being recognised. Especially since your 10 children have very unique names....

Crunchymum · 12/12/2016 22:14

Your kids have very - urm - unique names!!!

ItsRainingDeer · 12/12/2016 22:14

DD's teacher has an issue with this because DD is known by a name that is to spelt like her full name. Think Margaret - Maggie type. Teacher wanted to use the full name, but I pointed out DD will rarely answer to it, and all the children and parents already knew her (from toddler groups etc) by the short form. So she is known as Maggie when she is spoken to, and everything that is written (including when she has to write her name) is Margaret. Although she is rebelling and practicing Maggie at home.

DS she never had an issue with as the name he goes by is a contraction of his full name (Robert-Rob)

I think it's rude, especially if they have asked politely. I would be pissed off if people decided to lengthen the name I introduced myself with. No one except aunts, uncles and parents ever called me by my real name.

viques · 12/12/2016 22:15

Feodora? Can you not pronounce th?

5OBalesofHay · 12/12/2016 22:15

Why not just call all your children names you want to call them?

Letseatgrandma · 12/12/2016 22:15

Goodness, what a lot of children!

ElizaSchuyler · 12/12/2016 22:15

Teachers should call children by their preferred name. There was a space on the form at ds's school. His name is similar to Christopher where he is called Chris. He would never answer to the full version.

Similarly a girl called Libby whose full name is Elizabeth.

ShatnersBassoon · 12/12/2016 22:15

Did you fill in a 'known as' section on their entry forms? Go into the office and make sure you have it in writing that you don't want them to be called by their names.

One of the school staff is bound to be on here, so they might check the forms themselves tomorrow!

schmack · 12/12/2016 22:16

Do you have seven kids all in primary school? hats off if so.

mummamali · 12/12/2016 22:17

Xander is Alexander, i wanted to call them their full names but it was there choice to change them also they have been called shortened versions since nursery. Noah and Willow are Noah and Willow

This thread has to be a wind up?

schmack · 12/12/2016 22:18

Cecilia and Ceci is particularly lovely out of all your names. At secondary school they generally ask for given and preferred name so it should get easier.

OrangeSquashTallGlass · 12/12/2016 22:19

'I arranged a meeting with one of the deputy heads but they refused to see me'

...Really? Really? Do you know how busy school staff are atm and you want to see them about the fact the teachers call your children by the names you gave them?

ShatnersBassoon · 12/12/2016 22:19

Yes, every nursery-age Alexander will choose to be called Xander, especially if they're a big fan of Pointless.

mummamali · 12/12/2016 22:20

Feodora? Can you not pronounce th?
Its Russian

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 12/12/2016 22:22

They are their names.

If you don't want them called by their names then maybe you should have named them differently.

pipsqueak25 · 12/12/2016 22:25

oh dear...one of 'those parents', but in a nice way, i bet the teachers love you Smile

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 12/12/2016 22:25

OP you have 11 children according to your other threads is this really something to get so worked up about!
