To be mildly irritated by most tiring job ever?

A friend who is a teacher has been saying how exhausted she is, and that only other teachers would understand. She is not joking. AIBU to be mildly irritated by this? Yes teachers do a hard job, but there are other jobs that are also exhausting.

ivykaty44 · 09/12/2016 23:04

LeccyBill take a look at your Redbook

You do get paid anNual leave at 6 weeks and it's in there with maternity alloeNce. No you doBt get three month paid leave But you get the legal requirement

Itsallgoodimtold · 09/12/2016 23:06

I think teaching is exhausting but I really believe that like other responsible roles such as NHS, workers need to understand that they can't have a glass of wine midweek and get away with it. I have seen tired staff and it is frustrating that they don't accept their profession is exactly that, and not a job
Will hide behind sofa now Blush

QueenLaBeefah · 09/12/2016 23:07

I'm sure teachers work very hard.

But for the love of god they need to stop moaning. Lots of people work very hard too but seem to not have a massive martyrdom complex at the same time.

If you hate your job then leave. Because the children will be far better off without their teacher hating every second of it.

I'm sure schools will cope just fine when every teacher has left!

roundaboutthetown · 09/12/2016 23:10

Yawn. Comparing relative work fatigue levels in different jobs is a bit silly, really... As for teachers' pay, I was under the impression they were not paid for holidays, but were paid pro rata, with their pay for each term being spread out into monthly chunks. So teachers technically get unpaid holidays each year, not paid ones. Personally, I think they do an admirable job and, as with doctors and nurses, the quality and safety of their work goes down if they have to work too hard without breaks, so why you would want to show off about working harder than a moany, exhausted teacher, I don't know. Go get some sleep, instead, or campaign for more sane working hours for all!

Itsallgoodimtold · 09/12/2016 23:11

Kitty Flowers please take care of yourself xx

Bingowingslikeashieldofsteel · 09/12/2016 23:12

I'm not sure I know of any other industry where staff are expected to work during their 'holiday' planning for the upcoming term... I'm not a teacher (as in I don't receive the salary of a teacher) but I work in education and I bloody well earn my pittance... and the unpaid holidays I'm 'entitled' to and apparently brag about.

Seriously, reading some of the threads here slagging schools off - is it any wonder there's a massive problem with staffing in education and the attitude of children we have to deal with? I love my job, and the children I work with, but I lose a lot of patience when I get told I sit around for that 12 weeks of the year I'M NOT FUCKING PAID FOR!

And for the record, I miss every school event my 11 year old has because I'm not allowed to take time off outside school holidays...

harderandharder2breathe · 09/12/2016 23:12

Anyone can complain their job is exhausting... no one can claim theirs is THE MOST exhausting job because they've not done every other job and because different people cope differently even in the same role

The "only teachers would understand" would get my back up too (and both my parents are teachers so I do to some extent understand the downsides of the job)

willstarttomorrow · 09/12/2016 23:14

I think the reason teachers are much maligned is because all of us have an experience of being taught/have children in education so we all think we are experts. We are not.
I work with teachers, I am a school governor and I have friends who are teachers. I also have several friends who have left. They have left for lower paid jobs but just want to maintain their sanity and have a life with their family.
The salary/holiday issue is nonsesne. I work in a job in the public sector which does not really exist outside it. My qualifications and experience, like teachers, does not exist in the private sector . However some one with an equivelent level of higher degree and post -grad specialisation would be on double the salary. The pay off is the pension and more favourable working conditions. However these are disappearing. The working conditions are unbearable and pepole are leaving. Very well qualified, capable people.
I guess if this is what society wants; that those who advocate for the most vulnerable in society call it a day, then fine. However the value for money of someone newly qualified against someone who is capable of making sustainable change seems rather short sighted.

RebeccaCloud9 · 09/12/2016 23:14

I think a lot of teachers moan about the job because they often come across people who tell them how easy the job is and how they are work shy re the holidays and the length of a school day etc. It's like everyone knows how hard doctors and nurses work so they don't need to justify it.

rollonthesummer · 09/12/2016 23:14

no one can claim theirs is THE MOST exhausting job

Who has claimed that?

hollinhurst84 · 09/12/2016 23:15

Different definitions of exhausting I guess
Mine is in an office as such but it's mentally exhausting as adrenaline up and down
Physically it's fine but I go home emotionally and mentally drained

holidaysaregreat · 09/12/2016 23:15

fairy that sounds full on. But the military get a lot of public support and it is rare to hear people moaning about them.

harderandharder2breathe · 09/12/2016 23:16

Rollonthesummer - it's what the OPs friend seemed to be saying

TheFairyCaravan · 09/12/2016 23:18

But the military get a lot of public support and it is rare to hear people moaning about them.

Unfortunately that's not true anymore holidays.

roundaboutthetown · 09/12/2016 23:18

Frankly, I hear more bloody moaning about teachers than by teachers. What's with another inane thread moaning about moaning? If you don't like to hear people moaning, then stop moaning yourself.

RebelRogue · 09/12/2016 23:20

Did she really say it was the most exhausting or is that how interpreted it from "only teachers would understand"? While it's massive generalisation from her part, half the people i know think teaching is lots of fun and ohhh the holidays and ohhh working school hours only.
However the job is physically, mentally and emotionally draining. I know teachers that arrive at 7 am and leave at 6pm, and that's without clubs, meetings, seminars for parents, parent teachers meeting etc. Then there's the planning, sorting out or going to buy resources, marking, making displays, sorting out the xmas play(this term at least) and other events. And that's without the actual teaching, challenging behaviour, kids crying, kids refusing to do work, the kids that you spent a whole term teaching and can't even tell instantly that there are 5 fingers on one hand. If in ks1 there's also reading, spellings, handwriting that are separate but need to be fit in during the school hours, along with the curriculum. And john lost his hat, anna isn't getting money for the non uniform day and she's sad, jamie is hungry and his tummy hurts and can't focus because there was no breakfast, catherine is feverish and poorly but mum can't come pick her up,the kid that is behind emotionally and socially is winding up the kid with anger issues, the mum of a kid is aggressive at pick up and right in the TA's face and you have to calm her down, ofsted are coming and everyone is on your case about how everything looks and not how things are,you ask for help and get snapped at and to deal with it and so on and so on. And that's just in one day.

And no i'm not a teacher, tbh i could never be one.

maggiethemagpie · 09/12/2016 23:21

I briefly considered teaching a while back and spent a day with a teacher to see what it was really like.

I came away thinking bloody hell I couldn't do that it's exhausting.

It was the lack of down time I think.

I work in HR and I have meetings/calls during the day with gaps in between to write letters/general paperwork, have a break or just piss about on the internet.

But being on the go literally ALL day long would drive me bonkers.

Same for lots of other jobs too I suppose.

I consider myself lucky.

MargaretCavendish · 09/12/2016 23:21

Gosh, I hope we're all going to remember how annoying it is for people to tell you how much harder their lives are than yours next time someone on a thread claims that non-parents don't know the meaning of tired...

BoneyBackJefferson · 09/12/2016 23:23

whatwoulddexterdo
Yawn, yawn
Sick And tired of hearing how hard teachers have it
Interestingly, on a thread not started not started by a teacher.

If you don't like it go and get a real job
Ah yes, one of the worlds stupidest comments, usually made by idiots.

leccybill · 09/12/2016 23:25

I've read the OP a few more times and can't find the comparison with other jobs. OP's friend was just saying how other teachers can relate to the particular nature of the demandsame of the job at this time of year.

BoneyBackJefferson · 09/12/2016 23:26

oldlaundbooth
My brother is teacher.
He gets three months paid holiday per year. That's a quarter.
I don't know of any other profession that gets that.

I don't know any teacher that gets that, but it doesn't stop idiots from saying it.

toldmywraath · 09/12/2016 23:32
