To cancel DS's hospital appointment?

Timeforausernamechange · 06/12/2016 21:04

DS is 13 months. He has been referred to the hospital about his umbilical hernia. The appointment is on Thursday. We were referred a couple of months ago as he was having bad stomach pains and it looked like an inch of intestine had popped out (although I've since been reassured that the two were not linked)

DH thinks I should cancel it as it seems to be improving by itself. DS seems fine in himself and the bit sticking out has got smaller.

Is it too late to cancel the appointment? Or should I take him just in case?

I am probably being totoally neurotic on this but we've been through it a bit with his health although he has turned out fine. I am finding it difficult to be objective on this one.

Take him.

welshweasel · 06/12/2016 21:06

Definitely go. You'll either be reassured that nothing needs to be done or get advise about the appropriate course of action. And to be honest, with that story, I'd definitely want him seen.

Sirzy · 06/12/2016 21:06

Take him and get it checked.

40somethingwonderful · 06/12/2016 21:07

Take him to the appointment

Wolfiefan · 06/12/2016 21:08

He still has a hernia? Why would you cancel the appointment? Confused

Fluffsnuts · 06/12/2016 21:08

Definitely take him.

What if there isn't further improvement? You'll have to go back to the GP, get another referral. At least this way it can be monitored and he can be discharged if it is fine.

MagicMojito · 06/12/2016 21:09

I agree you should take him. Hopefully youll just end up reassured that all is well.

Floralnomad · 06/12/2016 21:10

Take him , just because you go to the appt you are not obligated to have anything done .

Ellieboolou27 · 06/12/2016 21:13

Take him don't self diagnose! just because it looks ok is not a reason not to go Confused

TheLaundryLady · 06/12/2016 21:27

He has a hernia please take him

OddBoots · 06/12/2016 21:28

Take him, you;d feel awful if you cancelled and then he was in pain again.

lorelairoryemily · 06/12/2016 21:32

Take him. Best to get a professional opinion

ShowMePotatoSalad · 06/12/2016 21:32

If it started getting worse again it could take ages to get another appointment. Don't cancel...plus cancelling at such short notice is not going to help anyone.

You're going to take him aren't you??

positivity123 · 06/12/2016 21:36

YABU
Of course you should take him

Tiptoethr0ughthetulips · 06/12/2016 21:36

You would be very unreasonable to cancel the appointment. He needs checking out my a qualified professional.

destinywidow · 06/12/2016 21:37

Definitely take him!

Ds2 had umbilical problems, please don't cancel. It's better to go and be told it's healing well/sorting itself out than cancelling and him getting worse.

Heirhelp · 06/12/2016 21:38

You need to take him and get it checked. If it is fine then it will be a quick appointment for both you and the dr.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 06/12/2016 21:40

Of course you take him.

3luckystars · 06/12/2016 21:46

Is your dh a doctor?

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 06/12/2016 21:48

Is your dh attending the appointment ? As a pp said, your ds still has a hernia so why On earth would you cancel!

CatoSoup · 06/12/2016 21:49

You would be mad not to take him.

Why risk his health over a couple of hours max at the hospital? Even if he is fine, he may need regular check ups to ensure he's progressing well.

PacificDogwod · 06/12/2016 21:54

Take him - even if it is 'just' for reassurance - surely being reassured by somebody experienced in this is worth the trek?

If you cancel, you will be discharged.
If you then change your mind, you'd have to referred back (at a cost to the NHS btw) and start again on the waiting list.
If the appointment does not suit, you can rearrange it but don't use the word 'cancel'

Most umbilical hernias in baby do resolve themselves, but getting him checked does not do any harm. A paediatric surgeon may wish to bring him back to the clinic in 3 to 6 months to assess him for interval change.

purpleflower23 · 06/12/2016 21:55

Why do you even need to ask? What do you have to do that's more important?

Mrsmadevans · 06/12/2016 21:57

You must take him , let the paediatrician decide what is best to do

DearTeddyRobinson · 06/12/2016 21:59

Unless your DH is a paediatric gastroenterologist then ignore him. Take your baby to a professional who can actually assess what is happening. If you cancel and it gets worse you will be kicking yourself, and waiting months for another appt.
