To be pleased my dd isn't Mary

This is not meant to be offensive to anyone who's child is Mary! I was Mary in my school play which makes me wonder is that role specifically for shy girls who don't like speaking out. My sister and cousin , both shy, had this role and same has happened in my dd class this year. Does it make me unreasonable to be pleased my dd has a two line speaking part and is not just sat holding a baby ?

My DD was Mary last year. She's far from shy Grin She's extremely chatty and very lively. I think she got it because Mary was basically stuck in her chair by the manger for the whole play! Keep her safe...easier to keep an eye on!

She also had a line... so YABU! I have some lovely pictures of her with Joseph.

nativity · 06/12/2016 08:07

Ha ha user maybe that's why. Ok guess my theory is wrong.

My dd was Mary and enjoyed it. But they drew it from a hat.

There are lots of other parts that children will enjoy playing though.

It depends on the school whether it's Mary who had the lines, or the Angel or Kings or whatever.

TheNaze73 · 06/12/2016 08:26

I think being Mary or Joseph is a nice thing to be. When I was at all school, they gave it to the best behaved boy & girl. I sadly never made the cut & im still very bitter Grin

Bluntness100 · 06/12/2016 08:28

No, I've never seen this either, in fact being Mary was often seen as a bit of a plum role.

I think you're over thinking it. It's just the school nativity..😃

ElfingHeck · 06/12/2016 08:41

TheNaze - there are some lovely adult Mary costumes available on Amazon. Perhaps you could recreate the nativity experience at home to erase the bitterness. Grin

Or even turn up to the school nativity dressed as Mary. That way, if anything goes wrong with the performance, you could be poised to leap on stage and take over ...

ChocoChou · 06/12/2016 08:44

Elfing GrinGrin

WingMirrorSpider · 06/12/2016 08:44

Elfing tell me those adult Mary costumes aren't those 'sexy' ones that seem to dominate the women's fancy dress market.

Sexy Santa is bad enough but sexy Mary?

RachelRagged · 06/12/2016 08:45

I was never Mary but that suited me just fine

I remember being a slave once but thinking back that might have been our Junior 4 (now Year 6) leaving play of Joseph and the Technicolour Coat .

Footinmouthasusual · 06/12/2016 08:45

When my son was cast as Joseph in the nursery nativity aged 3 the manager told me that now fewer than 2 other mothers lobbied for him to be demoted as he was 'naughty' and they wanted their child to be Joseph. Grin

Mary she drew from a hat along with the Angel Gabriel.

We didn't go to church and these mothers were avid church goers.

The bloody irony Smile

Corneliusmurphy · 06/12/2016 08:53

Ds was Joseph last year and the girl cast to play Mary swapped in the end as she decided she'd rather play one of the mice. Grin
I think the teacher asked who wanted the be who and the animal parts were far more popular than the human roles.
Ds thought there'd be more lines involved and looked like an extremely grumpy In his tea towel headdress throughout.

Only1scoop · 06/12/2016 08:57

Mary's at dd school do a shuffle through with Joseph and Donkey and hold the baby. One line.

Always thought Mary was a bit of a role for the shy ones too.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 06/12/2016 09:12

Dd had a solo in infants school

It certainly wasn't given to the shy girl that year Grin

deadringer · 06/12/2016 09:13

I used to work in a Montessori and we always picked the most passive child to be mary. I have no mary's in my family.Smile

OwlinaTree · 06/12/2016 09:19

Lolling at this. I have the dubious honour of casting the nativity, who plays Mary and Joseph is always a careful choice. Last year's Mary cried because she wanted to be the donkey!

ElfingHeck · 06/12/2016 09:19

Wing - adult costumes on Amazon are not 'sexy Mary' costumes thankfully Grin

mouldycheesefan · 06/12/2016 09:20

Hi it's a non speaking role in our school and is given to shy children as is Joseph.
It will vary from school to school.

NE14T · 06/12/2016 09:22

My experience is the same as Cornelius' in that all the children want to be animals. DD1 never wants to speak in plays but she's happy to be a sheep/ reindeer/ donkey Smile

She did an awesome dance along with some other children at their Diwali celebration though.

maddiemookins16mum · 06/12/2016 09:39

DD just wanted to be an angel, she "got" Mary once (aged 6 in the church Nativity) and was majorly peeved because she wanted to be a King.
(I was never Mary, too plain, it always went to the pretty girls with no NHS glasses and I was a pig in the stable scene, a pig for goodness sake, a pig!! dressed in a pink flanalette sheet). I'm not bitter, no, not me, I've never even thought about in the last 46 years, nope not once has that travesty crossed my mind.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 06/12/2016 09:48

I was Mary. 20ish years later it's my only claim to fame.
I wasn't shy in primary school but I'm guessing that things have changed a lot since then Xmas Grin

OhFuckOff · 06/12/2016 09:59

The infant play in our school this year isn't a traditional nativity (despite being a church school). Dd(6) is playing a mum and is singing a solo, I'm super proud but she really wanted to be a sheep Xmas Grin.
Mary and Joseph in previous years have always been shy children.

harderandharder2breathe · 06/12/2016 10:00

In my (small) primary school, a brunette was always Mary... I was blonde so I was an angel

Footinmouthasusual · 06/12/2016 10:03

Can I add to this nativity thread.

My friends child aged 6 was the inn keeper and when asked 'any room st the inn?' Replied 'yes come on in' Grin

nativity · 06/12/2016 10:20

Ah yes also I have noticed it's usually a brunette for Mary and blonde Angels. My dd play is at 4:15 today I'm very excited Smile
