To be pleased my dd isn't Mary

This is not meant to be offensive to anyone who's child is Mary! I was Mary in my school play which makes me wonder is that role specifically for shy girls who don't like speaking out. My sister and cousin , both shy, had this role and same has happened in my dd class this year. Does it make me unreasonable to be pleased my dd has a two line speaking part and is not just sat holding a baby ?

Boak at idea of sexy Mary from front page

My DS was a king. His costume came complete with a velcro-on hipster beard which got him a laugh Grin .

The only time I did a nativity I was too blonde for Mary but not blonde enough for an angel. But then my platinum blonde friends weren't angels either - one was a minx and the other had thick Aberdeen accent (in the Home Counties where we were many teachers struggled to understand her!). We had a big musical number where we were split into Marys, Josephs and innkeepers and we danced around the hall in Mary/Joseph pairs knocking on the innkeepers' doors and singing a little song.

Knock knock knock knock "Hey there, have you anywhere for my Father, my Mother,my sister, my brother, for me and my wife to share?"

No, I don't still remember the words 30 years on...

But another kid upstaged us all by playing the back end of the donkey and shaking his bum as he walked off stage.

We didn't have nativity plays at my DD's primary school (in the southern hemisphere), however my DD had one of the lead role's in her school play in year 6 and she's not shy (although I wouldn't call her outgoing). My DD use to do drama and a lot of the shy kids use to come out of their shell when doing drama.

I used to love the Nativity Plays they did on This Morning with Richard and Judy back in the 90's, they were fab.
I'm getting all nostalgic for Nativities now!

TiredMumToTwo · 06/12/2016 10:47

Both my son and my daughter have played Joseph in their respective school / nursery nativities!!

BathshebaSnowflakeStone · 06/12/2016 10:48

In my DC's school it's usually the gorgeous girl with long blond hair. Xmas Hmm

CaraAspen · 06/12/2016 10:51

Mary is one of the central characters! She doesn't need to speak. They really should pick the names out of a hat, though.

boatdancer · 06/12/2016 11:21

my chatty, confident (no idea where she got that from) blonde DD is Mary in the nursery nativity this year! No idea how many lines shes got though, but i've been treated to some half arsed renditions of away in a manger at home. Shes one of the youngest so i was surprised

Scoopmuckdizzy · 06/12/2016 11:27

I was always an angel, except the year I was a charleston dancer.

Mybeautifullife1 · 06/12/2016 11:34

My daughter was Mary. She's well behaved and very gentle. She has lines.

I think parents like the idea more than the kids tbh, although she was excited to be on the stage for the entire thing.

Bluntness100 · 06/12/2016 12:05

Footinmouthasusual · 06/12/2016 12:13

Listen to the news today
On order that you must obey
The emperor says the people must enrol
And write their names on a big long scroll
So come at once and don't delay
To Bethlehem so far away

It's been 35 years and I can still remember my lines! Grin

Footinmouthasusual · 06/12/2016 12:14

I know Blunt hilarious bless him.

toptomatoes · 06/12/2016 12:20

My oldest has been Joseph once. I think it's because his name is Joseph!

Damselindestress · 06/12/2016 12:23

Brings back memories! I was the inn keeper. It was a speaking part because people kept turning up to see the baby Jesus and I had to say "round the back!" and point them to the stables. I was normally a shy child but I remember delivering my one line with great vigour!

Footinmouthasusual · 06/12/2016 12:29

Bugger my youngest is 16! Feeling envious of all your littlies. Smile love a nativity play.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/12/2016 12:34

Yanbu. My experience is mary and Joseph are given to the shy children. At dds school, Mary and Joseph are the only non speaking roles. The 'best' roles are random things - a camel, a midwife.

KERALA1 · 06/12/2016 12:37

Dd quietly told me she was going to be Mary at her last nativity. Yep sure enough she was. I am also on the PTA. Kill me now!
