To be annoyed with doctor having a go at me about weight gain in pregnancy?

I live in Spain. Here....when your are pregnant they weighed you at every single appointment.
I am now 32 weeks pregnant and have gained 15kg. I started at 164cm and 55kg and I now weigh just below 71kg fully dressed....at night time (after eating 2 full meals....relevant for me because my weight can fluctuate by up to 1kg between morning and afternoon)
I am active (walk between 5-7km a day) I have a 5 year old, I go to te gym once or twice a week and box (pads and bag only) and I live up 10 flights of stairs (no lift)
My blood pressure is 90/55.
I just feel like they have a chart that says "you must only gain x amount" and anything over that seems to spark a load of criticism. I was told that if I continue to "gain huge amounts of weight like this" it can cause complications in the pregnancy.
But.....I am only 3.5kg overweight for my height if I WASN'T pregnant and I am nearly 8 months gone.

I just dread going there and feel angry that they keep having a go at me. Written down it seems absurd to me.AIBU? What is the deal in the UK?

I was only weighed once in pg, when I saw a different doctor who still seemed to do everything the old fashioned way. I pointed out that there was no point weighing me, as I hadn't been weighed previously and I had no idea what my pre-pregnancy weight was. He just asked me to stand on the scales regardless Confused

I gained 22 ish kg during both of my pregnancies. Like you, I knew I was healthy, my pre-pregnancy weight was at the low end of 'healthy', and my blood pressure went up to 'normal'. When I'm not pregnant it's always at the low end of normal. No one really said anything at my weight gain.

A Spanish friend of mine was pregnant at the same time and whenever we chatted and exchanged pregnancy notes (first baby...much excitement etc) expressed surprise at my weight gain, whereas I was nonplussed, as were my carers (I was in UK, she was in Spain), so perhaps it is more of a thing there.

My weight returned to pre-pregnancy 6 months later and 11 years later, it's still there.

BigGreenOlives · 06/12/2016 06:54

French doctors are strict about weight gain too. I don't know when women stopped being weighed in the uk during pregnancy, I didn't have my children here & was weighed every visit.

Specialapplek · 06/12/2016 06:54

I'm 165cm, gained 16kg and 13kg in 2 pregnancies. Starting weight was 48kg.

15kg doesn't sound that much to me but you do have about 8 more weeks to go. I was really struggling with all the extra weight towards the end so I hope you're much stronger than me!

I think your doctors may just be old school. My friend just had her baby recently and she is very petite as well. When she started gaining more weight than was 'ideal' her doctor kept nagging at her to slow down the weight gain and to go on a diet. But we really can't help what we gain in pregnancy can we? (For most people on reasonable diets anyway)

DragonRojo · 06/12/2016 07:43

It's the Spanish way. It's very old school and for what I hear from all my friends, the birth is very controlled and they won't take any of your wishes into account

lostoldlogin2 · 06/12/2016 11:07

yes dragon that's right they don't really listen to your wishes re birth plan. When my son was born they were not very nice at all (think shouting, calling me a silly girl, 7 vaginal examination from 7 different people the last 3 I refused and they forced my legs open and did it anyway....the list goes on. )

I'm prepared for that this time - ( my friend is a british midwife and will be my birth partner along with my boyfriend) and honestly they were like this about weight gain last time which was the same)

My friend is Spanish and was a midwife here and in Spain. She returned to the UK as she could not cope with the Spanish way of birth. She says the women are not listened to and it's very medically controlled. She hated it.

2.3 stone isn't that much. Light people often put loads of weight on in pregnancy. With DD1 I put 4 stone on from being at the bottom end of the healthy weight range. With DD2 I was at the top end of the healthy weight range before I got pregnant, but only gained two stone. I was the same weight at FT pregnant each time.

How can people loose 100lb after giving birth? That's my entire weight

They can't, obviously! It must be a typo for 10lbs

I used to work with a Spanish girl and she said exactly what you're saying! They weigh you every time and tell you off if you put on too much weight. And while that may be a good thing to say to some people (like me), for others it's really not a problem. Just keep doing what you're doing and try not to take it to heart. Or you could have a stock answer prepared and just repeat it.

Artandco · 06/12/2016 17:02

BUt how can you loose 100lbs in 6months either? I walk miles a day and breastfed, but if I lost 100lbs I would weigh 0lbs. Are you saying breastfeeding made you loose a whole human in weight?

Amelie10 · 06/12/2016 17:11

100lbs??? Wth, that's almost a whole other person Shock

Topseyt · 06/12/2016 17:25

These posts are making me very relieved that I was pregnant and gave birth in the UK.

Could it be a percentage of your original weight? Basically you've put on nearly 30 percent of your body weight, which in those terms is a lot.

Clearly in terms of simple 15 kg it's not huge, but in terms of percentage of original weight it is, espectialy considering you've still got two months to go.

I think the other thing to remember is they are just doing their jobs, they aren't trying to be mean to you, they are trying to ensure you have a safe and healthy pregnancy and birth.

GreenPetal94 · 06/12/2016 17:54

You sound a fine weight and as long as you are eating sensibly what can you do?
I think you should try not to get upset by the system, just say yes a lot and leave.

I put on over 20kgs during my pregnancy, and my bmi was over 30 at my booking appointment. No one said a word about my weight, think I was only weighed twice at 6 and 12 weeks. I even ended up with a blood clot in my leg at 34 weeks, the doctors didnt know the cause but I think it's because i sat on my arse he whole time stuffing my face with cake Grin I had to give my booking weight and full term weight so they could work out medication and again, no one said a word! Very odd and I don't think you're BU at all!

Farfromtheusual · 06/12/2016 18:21

FWIW I was 87kgs at booking and 110kgs at 40+6, and my baby was only 6lb12!

Cherryskypie · 06/12/2016 18:29

You really think that's an appropriate thing to say to a heavily pregnant poster Gincident?

Topseyt · 06/12/2016 18:37

Gincident, what a smug and sanctimonious post.

We all know the risks. We are what we are, and OP really hasn't put on an unacceptable amount of weight anyway.

lostoldlogin2 · 06/12/2016 18:47

Yeah really Gincident......I think you'll find that I'm not exactly in the "obese" category.......
