To be annoyed with doctor having a go at me about weight gain in pregnancy?

I live in Spain. Here....when your are pregnant they weighed you at every single appointment.
I am now 32 weeks pregnant and have gained 15kg. I started at 164cm and 55kg and I now weigh just below 71kg fully dressed....at night time (after eating 2 full meals....relevant for me because my weight can fluctuate by up to 1kg between morning and afternoon)
I am active (walk between 5-7km a day) I have a 5 year old, I go to te gym once or twice a week and box (pads and bag only) and I live up 10 flights of stairs (no lift)
My blood pressure is 90/55.
I just feel like they have a chart that says "you must only gain x amount" and anything over that seems to spark a load of criticism. I was told that if I continue to "gain huge amounts of weight like this" it can cause complications in the pregnancy.
But.....I am only 3.5kg overweight for my height if I WASN'T pregnant and I am nearly 8 months gone.

I just dread going there and feel angry that they keep having a go at me. Written down it seems absurd to me.AIBU? What is the deal in the UK?

I think everyone is different. With my last pregnancy (twins) I put on weight in the first trimester - despite hyperemesis which caused 2 hospital admissions and gained nothing in the third trimester as I couldn't eat more than a few mouthfuls, without being either full, or vomiting!

Peachesandcream15 · 05/12/2016 20:23

I don't think it's a lot....I put on a lot in pregnancy 😳 stopped weighing myself in the end. Just smile and nod. You'll lose it. I've just got half a stone to go although I fit in clothes better now than I did before as I'm more in proportion now.

Hellochicken · 05/12/2016 20:26

In UK I went from about 64kg to 89kg (before delivery) 4 times and no-one mentioned it!
They don't seem to be registering that your weight is ok now. Maybe they have you on a chart and following your current tragectory you may be heading for greatness! I imagine the weight gain will continue but maybe at a lesser rate and then they won't be concerned. They probably will think you took their advice!! Wink

HeddaGabbler · 05/12/2016 20:32

Hey op. I don't think it's that much! I put on 2.5 stones. I was slim to begin with. all but about 6 pounds dropped off of its own accord within a few months. I didn't overeat, I stayed active, it was just the way it was. Try not to worry too much.

RochelleGoyle · 05/12/2016 20:32

DailyMailCrap How could you possibly be expected to not put on any weight during pregnancy? The placenta, amniotic fluid and baby all weigh a fair bit!

PinkyPie2012 · 05/12/2016 20:35

I am also 164 cm and when I got pregnant with my first my weight was also 55 kg. Personally to me 15 kg doesn't sound a lot, I gained 27 kg and lost 30+ kg after. Nobody ever said a thing to me about my weight.

Oly5 · 05/12/2016 20:38

I am also a fat woman when pregnant and EASILY put on 33kg and more! Then lose it within a few years of each baby. You sound fit and healthy, weighing at every appt is ridiculous

lostoldlogin2 · 05/12/2016 20:41

My blood pressure is normally low.....85/45 and can drop to 80/40. I never have symptoms though and it has never affected me (have fought competitively , routinely done 10-15km runs etc etc) . I suspect part of the weight gain both times may be because they freak out about my blood pressure and tell me to increase my sodium abs eat extra salt. I do that and retain fluid (although not visibly....have no swelling in ankles hands or feet but I know from when I get my period that I retain fluid as my weight can go up by 2-3kg in that week and then go straight back).

don't worry about it! i have put a lot
on too ive stopped weighing myself now. as long as you know you are eating healthy don't stress too much about the scales

BabyGanoush · 05/12/2016 20:47

OP, I had this too.

I just refused to be weighed after 8 months. Just said:" no"

Artandco · 05/12/2016 20:51

Rochelle - because presumably if your overweight they expect you to be loosing natural weight at the same time as gaining baby weight so by the end you weigh the same or less

lostoldlogin2 · 05/12/2016 20:51

You can't say no here really Confused they are quite.....we are professional you know nothing dof as you are told.

It's not always a bad thing to be mindful of pregnancy weight gain. There are loads of people on here who say they haven't lost their baby weight and their "baby" is 10 or whatever. But I don't think 15kg is a huge amount. I put on 2.5 stone by delivery at 34 weeks. I was active (couldn't exercise due to complications but walked loads and did some gentle swimming) and ate very well after the early nauseous weeks passed. It took quite a while to lose it but I don't regret putting on that much. It was what my body needed. Once I had deflated I had a stone of actual fat to lose. It's gone now and I'm below the weight when I got my bfp. I've always been very body conscious and hadn't had a bmi above 22 pre pregnancy but I was ok with that weight gain.

lostoldlogin2 · 05/12/2016 22:21

Oh I absolutely agree - people not able to lose the baby weight can be an issue - but that won't be the case with me - my hobby is a combat sport and cutting weight off is nothing unusual! Also - with my son it was easy and he is only 5 and my habits haven't changed much - I lost nearly 10kg giving birth!.

I put on 50lbs with each of my pregnancies (3 times) and lost it all within 1/2 years each time. I am now back to being a small size 8. I read somewhere that smaller women put on more weight in pregnancy, which would make sense.

PassMeTheFrazzlesPlease · 05/12/2016 22:28

(The first 20lbs was always gone after a few months as well, with the delivery plus loads of weight in the weeks afterwards, without trying at all.)

lostoldlogin2 · 05/12/2016 22:30

sounds familiar PassMeTheFrazzles

You sound like me. Back in the day, I was only supposed to put on 1 kilo a month and I consistently put on 2 kgs, until they told me I should go on a diet, then I put on 5 kgs.

BestZebbie · 05/12/2016 22:44

I gained 3 stone (including baby), from a 9.5 stone start - it turned out that a lot of it was just fluid and 1 stone went straight out down the loo in the week after the birth (as I started to be able to see my anklebones again etc). The next stone went away after a couple of months of milk production and I ended up with 3-4kg of residual "baby weight" (presumably the result of over-eating in pregnancy, despite not feeling that I changed my diet or portion size that much) that took six weeks of My Fitness Pal tracking to shift. Even though it was a massive gain compared to my starting size it didn't feel particularly excessive given how quickly/naturally 5/6 of it went away again.
I do, however, remember being quite irate on day 3 when I was sent home with the baby and I weighed myself on the scales I had been using throughout and I had fractionally gained weight since the day before the birth - there was some shouting about the amount of effort involved in definitely losing at least 8lb 7oz!

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 05/12/2016 23:14

I was only weighed at the first appointment. (Thank goodness!)

I went from 9st 2 to 8st 7 in the nausea phase when I could barely eat, then up to 13st by 39 weeks. It was mostly bump- 8lb10 of baby and a lot of fluid. I'm short, so there was only one place for it to go! My waist went from 27 to 43 inches, and the fundus measurement went to 45 cm!

There was about 1.5 stones of "me" weight to lose after the water retention etc had gone, and I've settled at a lighter weight than my pre-pregnancy weight.

I think my gains were for a few reasons; I'm normally active but the nausea/ exhaustion phase was followed immediately by SPD so I was very sedentary through most of the pregnancy. I think the nausea combined with being sedentary could have affected my metabolic rate and slowed it down compared to usual. In the late stages, I was exhausted from constant pain, so craved quick release carbs. Snacking was also one of the few forms of entertainment I could manage!

I did have a couple of extra scans due to the rate of bump growth which rocketed well off the graphs. By week 38, the MW concluded that it was my "normal" having had a scan the previous week. Weight was never mentioned. I kept my waist until late on- people were frequently surprised when I turned around and revealed my swiss ball bump after my slim rear view. Grin

My legs struggled with the weight and I was near housebound in the final month. Second time, I managed to stay a stone lighter. I scrounged crutches to keep active, and controlled my sweet tooth better. I think the main difference was water retention as the "me" weight to lose after was the same.

I've heard that smaller people are more inclined to lay down reserves during pregnancy. It was certainly obvious on me anyway!

It's only recently that my 3&5 yo's combined with my weight have exceeded my pregnancy weight! No wonder my legs were buckling!

WorraLiberty · 05/12/2016 23:24

If you're not eating a lot and you're doing a fair bit of exercise, gaining 2 stone is probably causing them a tiny bit of concern.

Are they really 'having a go at you' and 'criticising' though?

If so, I'd be inclined to ask them what it is they expect you to do about it.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 06/12/2016 00:00

I put on 5 stone during my first pregnancy. No one batted an eyelid in the U.K. Perhaps they should though as I had high BP/mild preeclampsia and a rather large baby that I struggled to give birth to Blush
My BMI was low at start of the pregnancy though which is why they didn't bother I think.

Cherryskypie · 06/12/2016 00:13

By the NHS calculator you had a BMI of 20.4 which is the low side of the healthy weight band for your height. It sounds like you were very active too. You're now just over half a stone from being in the healthy weight band for your height (for a non pregnant woman) at 32 weeks pregnant! Seriously, don't worry about it.

lostoldlogin2 · 06/12/2016 01:37

Yes they really do "have a go" and "criticise"
They actually shout. Like literally translation "You have got very fat and put on a huge amount of weight and you need to control yourself and stop eating so much DO YOU UNDERSTAND"

Bedside manner isn't really a thing here.

Sorry - and when I ask them what I should do they just suggest eating less - but......if I do that I actually wont be eating enough.

They also told me I should be eating a lot of shellfish to keep my iron levels up and I explained that I do not eat pork or shellfish and she rolled her eyes and was like "well......whatever. "
